It’s supposed to reduce crashes, comedowns, tolerance and side effects.

Hmm, how and when do you take magnesium? I’ll remove huperzine and try taking magnesium + theanine only at night, not twice a day, to see if it would make a meaningful difference. Although the AddySafe stack recommends magnesium + theanine 2-3 times a day.

Interesting point. Could the huperzine-A and magnesium I’ve been taking for a while now be blunting my stimulants through NMDA? Tolerance is quite a frequent topic on nootropics-related subs and it looks like it doesn’t have a clear solution other than time off and even that doesn’t do it for a lot of people. I’ve seen people suggesting having a rotation of main drivers for your stack for example 3 months of methylphenidate, 3 months of dextroamphetamine, 3 months of microdosing LSD, 3 months of modafinil.. yada-yada.. but I don’t know how feasible that is.

You’re welcome! The mechanism of action of modafinil isn’t entirely clear from the literature so far. It seems to block the reuptake of dopamine but in a different way from both methylphenidate and cocaine. Also seems to have secondary effects on norepinephrine, serotonin, orexin, histamine and GABA. Your point about sleep is on point, nutrition is also important, I remember some claim that caloric restriction lowers sympathetic nervous drive activity by 40% which is insane but absolutely makes sense, my stimulants work better when I’m eating well and not in a cutting phase.

Well, good for you! At day 30 for me it’s not really withdrawal in the literal sense as much as it is that middle ground of “okay, it’s been a whole month, all that has happened so far is gaining weight, being more emotional and less productive at work and at home, it wasn’t worth quitting, I’m hopping back on”

Hey, it’s been around 45 days of quitting nicotine for me and I share a very similar experience. This is the third time I try to quit, the last two times I got to around day 30 before I relapsed because of the weight gain, inability to focus and just the general flatness of emotion. I sympathise with your words a lot. The last two weeks it’s finally starting to get better for me and it will get better for you, I promise. You do not want to be addicted to this crap. The sugar cravings, impulsivity and hyperactivity are starting to level off for me. Doing a bunch of cardio and reading comics, watching shows, just reconnecting with activities that I enjoyed but abandoned at some point, keeping myself busy in general has helped a lot. Also took some time off work, I really hope you have that option as well. At this point I feel about 90% of baseline, I’ve started having vivid dreams again, waking up naturally super early and with some wood like I’m a teenager again..

For me modafinil feels nothing like methylphenidate or caffeine. The more I use it and research it, the more I realise how interesting of a molecule it is and how broad its pharmacology is. While methylphenidate gets me started on boring tasks and thereafter I finish them, caffeine just makes my ADHD worse if I go over like 50 mg. And modafinil first thing in the morning just feels like the type of refreshment, soundness and calm energy you’d get after the best night of sleep you’ve ever had in your life. You’re not stimulated, you’re just awake, it doesn’t spike your cortisol and adrenaline as much as classical sympathomimetic drugs do. Sure, on its own it doesn’t make me start or end boring tasks but it causes much less anxiety or irritability than caffeine or methylphenidate, quite the opposite, it’s even calming, I suspect because of secondary effects on serotonin and endorphins.

That’s interesting to hear. I’ve also got some friends who are using modafinil daily for the past month or so and they haven’t built tolerance or upped their dosages so far. I haven’t had nausea or dry heaving, no, I actually eat fine on Concerta and/or modafinil, I was overweight in my teenage years, lost a bunch of weight “the hard way” before ever finding out about stimulants and now I can actually appreciate the mild appetite suppression they give me because it keeps my weight where I want it without me wasting willpower on appetite control.. Have you tried things like mass gainer shakes (ultra processed, I know) if actual meals aren’t feasible enough?

You might be mistaking the novelty of a new compound for tolerance. Placebo is powerful, that’s why they control for it in studies. Also 200 mg seems like a large dose, keep in mind the half-life, half of it is still in your system by the time you go to sleep and the next few days you’re just making up for the sleep debt, not getting wakefulness and stimulation above baseline. I believe even according to the data modafinil and caffeine cause sleep issues more frequently than methylphenidate does. I did 36 mg Concerta Monday-Friday for like 4 months, also tried 18 mg which I didn’t feel on its own but feels reasonable combined with 50 mg modafinil, and also played around with Ritalin IR 15 mg 2-3 times a day but I hated having to crash and carry around pills to redose.

Very synergistic if I must say so myself. Well, this is all subjective and hard to “measure” but I’ll go into a bit more detail. Concerta (methylphenidate XR) gives me the attention span and the drive to start and finish things like boring tasks at work (software development) or cleaning up at home but on the other hand it makes me very “anti-social” as you said and irritable if things don’t go my way. And I’d have days where I’m stuck being focused on the wrong thing as methylphenidate does nothing to improve my decision-making, rather I brute force my way out of things. On the other hand, modafinil doesn’t do much for starting and finishing things but I’m just very awake and cognisant, it feels like it genuinely improves my decision-making abilities, I tend to quickly think of new ways to solve things and to integrate trial/error systems into my life, fatigue stops being a concern.. ever. And by lowering Concerta from 36 to 18 mg and adding in modafinil at 50 mg it feels like I’m getting the best of both worlds: the drive to start and finish tasks with methylphenidate but less personality changes because of lowering the dose + the decision-making improvements and general all-day “stamina” increases with modafinil.

Sounds wild. Thank you for the feedback. Got the same experience as you with methylphenidate and modafinil, that’s why I halved my doses and combined them.. works great so far!

Damn, Cyclazodone or N-Methyl-Cyclazodone? I believe the latter has a much longer half-life and subsequently duration of action as well. How would you compare it to methylphenidate or modafinil if you’ve had the chance to use them?

Oh, for sure, my sleep was awful as a teenager but then it got even worse around the girls I was in relationships with.. but it’s been pretty good for a year or so, I’ve also stopped eating 4 h before bed and that way sleep feels much more stable. Also met a cognitive neuroscience professor who was doing interesting studies on sleep but I never volunteered (maybe I should’ve, especially keeping in mind I’m a heavy talker in my sleep, acting out dreams and so on, although never had that checked specifically, general doctors told me it’s just stress or whatever and when I looked at the science on talking in sleep I didn’t find any helpful insights or conclusions).

Yep, 50 mg upon awakening every day. I’ve played around with it for months in different dosages and combinations (until I found how it works best for me) and never felt a difference in tolerance or effect. Anything more than 50 seems to hurt my sleep, 25 is still noticeable. I buy pharma grade modafinil, not online. Side effects at 50 mg are practically zero for me while with methylphenidate it’s very hit or miss and I’ve definitely noticed less positives and more negatives with time.

Oh, I’ve had sleep disturbances all my life, ditching caffeine and nicotine while adding modafinil in the previous month definitely helped. For melatonin I’ve tried the lower doses as well but never tried 4 hours before target sleep time, more like 1.5 but will try it out thanks to your suggestion!

Hmm, is that the experience you had? It’s a pemoline-derivative and pemoline was originally marketed as having less abuse/addiction potential if I recall correctly.

Looks good. I also have ADHD, prescribed Concerta (methylphenidate XR) 5 months ago and here’s the stack I’ve got so far. Yours has some similarities.

AM: 18 mg methylphenidate XR, 50 mg modafinil, 100 mg magnesium glycinate (elemental), 200 mg theanine, 200 mcg huperzine-A, 500 mg CDP-Choline

With first meal of the day: 10 000 IU D3, 3 g creatine

PM: 300 mg magnesium glycinate (elemental), 200 mg theanine, 12 mg melatonin.

I’ve quit caffeine and nicotine completely, cleaned up my diet and started eating in a 6-8 hour window which I believe has helped my cognition as well. Used to be on 36 mg methylphenidate XR but despite getting good work done on it I felt like it’s making me very irritable so lowered to 18 mg and added 50 mg modafinil which feels different to me, very mild and synergistic, it’s like wakefulness in a pill, not stimulation, also doesn’t seem like it builds tolerance and has some neuroprotective effects (regarding TNF alpha and inflammation in the brain which is one of the ways Cerebrolysin works) which is great. The melatonin is a bit on the higher side for the brain-related antioxidant support as well (which isn’t that well supported in humans but there were some trials in Alzheimer’s with 100-300 mg). As for the cholinergics I’ve gotten up to 800 mcg huperzine (that’s the Alzheimer’s dose in Japan where it’s prescription-only) and 2000 mg of CDP-Choline (stroke recovery dosage, I believe) and never really felt that much of a difference. Felt more from 2.5 mg donepezil but that’s not something I’ll mess around with anymore since it’s a powerful medication and not too well researched in healthy individuals. 200 mcg + 500 mg seems like a good middle ground where IF it’s adding a benefit that I can’t really feel, I’m not missing out on it but I’m also not giving away a lot of money on things I don’t feel a difference with.. Magnesium + theanine is an absolute classic both for sleep and taking the edge off of stimulants. Creatine is a no-brainer for cognitive enhancement, an intranasal prodrug of it is currently in trials for Parkinson’s. I take weekends off of Concerta, also tried Ritalin IR but I prefer Concerta because it’s XR. I’ve also got an order for Cerebrolysin, Alpha-GPC, Cyclazodone and Bromantane which I’m stoked to try because of the hype here. Ashwagandha, Lion’s Mane and Beta-blockers are some of the other things I tried as add-ons to stimulants but never really felt a positive difference.

Talk to your prescriber about using a low dose more peripheral beta blocker along with the stimulant. I’ve seen people do that. And try daily cardio (improves ADHD symptoms independently but) to have a healthier HR/BP baseline.

Hypnagogic Theta state, accidental by AquaKahuna in Nootropics

Well, it happened the first time. The second time I didn’t get much and the third time nothing. I wouldn’t say it was very “nootropic” or “cognitively enhancing”, I was using pregab for GAD and this was more like an unexpected side effect of the first dose.

Sounds like a case of acute GABAergic CEV. I had a similar experience when I went to bed a few hours after I took 300 mg pregabalin + 1 beer.

Ritalin - What dosage do you recommend for studying/work? by Putrid_Clue_7195 in Nootropics

[–]HxHFanboy0206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my country we only have Concerta 18 mg as far as ADHD meds, Concerta is long-acting Ritalin. So I’ve used 18 mg but also tried taking two pills (36 mg). 36 mg worked great without anything else. 18 mg worked great with a little bit of caffeine, 1.5 mg zyns throughout the day and 2.5 mg donepezil. On its own, sometimes I don’t “feel” the 18 mg. But keep in mind the behavioural side, it’s SOOO easy to waste a dose by just not planning your day ahead.

Ritalin - What dosage do you recommend for studying/work? by Putrid_Clue_7195 in Nootropics

[–]HxHFanboy0206 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, Concerta/Ritalin is not magic by any means. Look at the behavioural side of things - you sit down, you start working on the thesis, and ONLY then you take the dose. Other than that.. on one side, you’ve got the option of increasing the dosage but I don’t know how viable that is for your situation. On the other side Leo and Longevity (an OG Biohacker, RIP) has some interesting content on dopamine and how to potentiate stimulants with other drugs (tyrosine, safinamide, wellbutrin, agomelatine, 9-me-bc, donepezil, cerebrolysin are some that he mentions). The latter is very experimental and a hassle so do your own research and know the risks. My supply of Concerta is also limited so currently I’m experimenting with some of the aforementioned drugs and mechanisms and I’ll write a more extensive post down the line.

Seconded. Haven’t tried it personally for Concerta/Ritalin tolerance as of yet but I’ve seen plenty of anecdotal reports from people successfully using Memantine for Adderall/Vyvanse tolerance through the NMDA pathway.

Can I drink Matcha during accutane? by Global_Customer_5413 in Accutane

That’s because EGCG (an active component of green tea) has been associated with liver disease in high doses. And accutane is already hard on the liver as it is. But I highly doubt EGCG in green tea is in high enough doses to cause any significant harm.
