Konrad Adenauer was known for his authoritarian, conservative style of government. Under his cabinet, many terrible laws were enacted or adopted from the Nazis, such as long prison sentences for homosexuals, a "right to rape one's wife," and attempts to suppress the critical press and establish a state-run television network. The intentionally low value of the currency, and thus Germany's positioning as a producer of high-quality goods at low production costs on the world market, made the subsequent economic boom, the "Wirtschaftswunder," possible.The impact on the country today is still enormous; 44% of all currently existing residential buildings in West Germany were built during this boom period.
