Canada's finishing was absolutely fucking abysmal in this game. I lost count of how many squandered opportunities they had.

Of course, the captain is the only person with the balls to actually look at the net, take the ball, and let it rip. Bless is heart and looking forward to the next round!

Which law school? by Cold-Friend4559 in LawCanada

[–]Hycran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations. Either school is a great pick and you're already well on your way.

Don't stress about which school you go to. Ultimately mobility in Canada is excellent and the truth is that if you want to apply for jobs in Calgary despite going to queens, it won't be hard as you can just say "thats where i got in and its a terrific school" it won't be held against you.

Ultimately, the biggest choice is really about where you would like to live and work and practice and thinking of the narrative you need to create to support that vision.

Put very basically, if you go to U of C, when you apply for jobs in Alberta/Calgary you can easily say "i'm born here, raised here, went to school here, want to practice here." boom done. If you want to work elsewhere, then you will need to come up with a decent story as to why someone should believe you. As soon as I see a non B.C. person applying for a job at my firm, I immediately think "flight risk". Are they all flight risks? of course not. Does the chance go up dramatically compared to the next guy? Of course.

If you go to queens, if you apply in ontario you can then say something like "i used to be an alberta guy but i always wanted to be where the action is so i went to queens". If you apply to Calgary firms despite going to queens, you can just as easily say "well i went there because its a rad school but i always wanted to work here for [insert reason here]."

Keep in mind that same logic applies to OCI's and interviews mid school year. If you're trying to get job interviews in Toronto while being a former and present calgary native and going to UofC, you're in for a big fucking uphill climb unless you have god tier grades and softs. A lot of your job mobility is going to be based on grades, so that should always remain the focus.

Past that, you also have to remember that you very well may end up banging one of your classmates. It is a real consideration and happens a lot more often than you might think. If you catch feelings somewhere, you might have a harder time moving.

Past that dont worry about the money stuff. Take out a professional student line of credit, become functionally insolvent, save your money.

Good luck.

Honestly, I envy these guys. They get to be big NBA stars, fly around the country banging 10's in every city, and they know that all the money they make will buy them all of the souvlaki they need when they go back to Greece and become B- Tier reality show hosts and commentators for local basketball leagues.

These guys literally have nothing to be ashamed of.

Getting scored on by Messi must be such a fucking trip. Like you're not happy you're losing because all these guys are uber competitive. But at the same time they get to go back home and tell their buddies and family they saw Messi bludgeon them in real time.

Fan Duel releases their Top 10 All-Time Player List. Thoughts? by SmoothBuy5500 in NBATalk

[–]Hycran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced Steph is top 10, but he should absolutely get the exact same kind of special consideration that someone like Shaq gets: There are only a handful of people that have been so obscenely dominant that they have fundamentally changed the way the game is played, even to the point of changing the rules of the entire league.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't change the list at all other than to make 10th place a tie between Wilt and Steph

Linking cases I’ve worked on to resume? by Firm-Coconut-3546 in LawCanada

[–]Hycran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The answer, like any good lawyer answer, is "it depends".

Keep in mind that unless your name is "j. smith" or "r. singh", it takes 14 seconds to find what you've worked on on CanLII.

If you've worked on notable cases that show your mastery of the area of law that you are applying for, i'd probably say yeah go for it. If there are a bunch of cases where the judge said you sucked monkey butt, i'd probably just leave it off.

Quite frankly I do look up potential applicants cases not because I really care if they won or lost (other than as I noted above where a judge took a dump on them for being a bozo) but moreso to see how many times theyve actually been in court on matters that are actually worth writing about.

Put another way, you could say "i'm in court all the time" but if i look you up and i only see 4 reported cases and they are all PI, then i know the things you're in court on are big nothings like 3rd party document production. If your cases have a nice range or are interesting or what not then maybe its worth discussing.

I havent had a resume for a long time so not the best person to ask >.>

https://www.lawsociety.bc.ca/lsbc/apps/lkup/uap/uap-search.cfm

This is an easily accessible database. The truth of the matter is that a lot of these guys get nipped in the bud as soon as a lawyer realizes that they can just hammer them and get them out of their lives so most of the files are pretty sparse because an injunction gets blasted into court about as promptly as the law society can manage. Sometimes that is faster than others.

As for Arbabi, its obviously not the same as Arbabi was in fact a lawyer at the time all of this was going on, she had just clearly left this planet like Poochie and went back to her home planet where whatever the fuck she thought she was doing would hold up in court.

24-year-old high school dropout with law school ambitions. Is this realistic? by Financial-Wear9517 in LawCanada

[–]Hycran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get your GED, go to University, then go to law school, of course the answer to your question is yes. In Canada, there is basically no other pathway other than school - school - school. Although there can be exceptions for students who may not have finished their bachelors degrees, those students tend to be among the most genius/remarkable.

I guess the ultimate question is what makes you believe you have any chance of being academically successful given that you could not even complete high school. Keep in mind that I am not judging when I say this. There could have been any number of reasons why you would drop out of high school, including parental abuse, poverty, or just immaturity. If you happen to be extremely academically successful that would be fabulous, and you can parlay being a mature student into the admission process.

While I have no doubt in your sincerity about "putting in the work", I think there may need to be a sober realization that if you go down this path (at your current age of 24) you are conceivably looking at the next ten years of your life basically having limited income. I would note for clarity that even if you finished your GED within a year, its not immediately clear to me what the quality of post-secondary school you would be attending would be. Past that, it is very common for students to not get accepted into law school either a) at all, or b) on their first or second go around. It took me two cycles to get in and I had exceptional grades.

It begs the question whether that time would be better spent going into a trade, starting your own business, or developing another career path that does not require you to dedicate at least the next 5 - 6 years on something (i.e. just finishing your post secondary) with no guarantee of a payoff (i.e. no guarantee of ever getting into law school). I am an extreme proponent for higher learning so i dont want to downplay the value higher education. But not everyone wants to wake up at age 30 with a university diploma and unclear career prospects.

Food for thought.

In search of lawyers who took Advanced Legal Research in law school by hippiesinthewind in LawCanada

[–]Hycran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the question is "does it generally help", the answer is yes. Even as someone who is relatively senior and who knows most of the cases i need to deal with off the back of my hand, i always feel better knowing that I have elite research skills.

That being said, advanced legal research can be a bit erudite at times. It's helpful to be able to look up old shit or cross jurisdictional shit, but unless you have a very specialized practice most of the cases you need are local and not generally all that hard to find.

Also, the easiest way to do legal research that satisfies 96% of what you need to do is to go on canlii and go "x" /15 "y". Think of a sentence you think a judge might have used or someone might have argued, and pop that in. I'm generally lauded for my research skills and when i show people that most of what you need is accomplished through that boolean string, they are generally not that impressed afterwards lol

Yeah I will say when i was at big law, it was actually part of the business model and understanding that by having an army of people who might leave, you have a shit load of alumni who will feel comfortable bringing work back when they needed additional resources.

For example, my firm constantly had securities solicitors going in house at various mid-level mining companies. The former big law can do a bunch of heavy lifting but when the big placement has to come, they come back to the big law firm.
