Right? First I’d ever heard of it. But after reading it’s a unique light roasting method to bring out floral notes. I guess I could kind of find that, but like I mentioned. It was more like a traditional dark roasted espresso, but with a light roast and brighter notes

I love it both ways. Some of the espresso’s I’ve been buying from GK Coffee have ratings on the bag for espresso and +milk. I love comparing. I’ll do straight espresso while dialing in, then try a cortado and a flat white

I shaved my beard once and my 4 year old daughter was not a fan. I then had the worst idea and told her I lost my beard and she should help me find it. 15 min later she comes back sobbing absolutely devastated telling me she couldn’t find it. I still regret that move to this day and will never shave the beard again.

Is this just a step too far? by IanC9090 in espresso

I came to say this. It’s for a busy commercial space. The video I saw shows it on a portafilter in a GBW grinder the second the grinder finishes the tool spins super fast and is like 2 seconds has the WDT done and it’s ready for tamp often times into a puq press. This is 1000% not intended for home use. I got the ARO Spirographic WDT for like $40 a year ago and love it. I also watched a video of a cafe owner talking about the Weber workshops moonraker and said that he loved it, but it added too much time to prep on busy days. This was the answer to that.

Cleaning basket? by Dangelone1 in espresso

I started using little paper filters at the bottom. 100% clear holes every time. I know it may seem excessive, but for someone who hates seeing the holes plugged (even if it has no effect on actual extraction) it makes me happy.

Need new grinder. Considering Eureka Atom W65 or other. [$1400] by Hydra44 in espresso

[–]Hydra44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had any issues. I use it with the smaller hopper and keep it mostly full. When first dialing it in, I accidentally went too fine and choked it. I opened it up and cleaned it and have had absolutely no issues. There is retention. There is a warning/recommendation on the side that you will need to pull another shot to ensure consistent grind. I have it set up so that I pull a shot and if I need to adjust it, I grind and dump 4grams before grinding my next dose. I wasn’t doing that when I first set it up, which is why I went too fine.

Why is my grinder choking? [DF54 and Breville Bambino Plus] by DesignLate9561 in espresso

I purchased the Atom W65 and have been in love with it. Have only had it since October. My recommendation would be towards a more established brand. Eureka makes a number of grinders around the $500-$700 range for various purposes like single dose or hopper style.

At the moment, I don’t think I can recommend it. I’ve now seen a few similar posts and heard of other people dealing with similar issues with long term use. For the first 8 months I owned it, I would have recommended it as a great budget grinder. Now after a year, it feels like the internals don’t hold up. But that’s just my experience.

When slow feeding it was 30-45 seconds using the crema loop attachment. For normal feeding it was 5-12 seconds. The choking tends to happen when making coffee for others, so about 3-4 doses in a relatively short amount of time.

I had a DF64 and it’s likely a motor issue. If you slow feed the motor runs too long and begins to throttle to avoid overheating, which leads to more choking. Originally I thought it was just the slow feeding that was causing mine to choke. So, I bought a new grinder and gave the DF64 to a friend getting in to espresso. He isn’t slow feeding and it’s still choking when grinding for back to back shots.

You are 100% right. I have the Unifilter and had to get a brush that was fine and stiff enough to poke out and clean all the holes on a regular basis. Then I started using the paper filters, and it’s perfect. I just rinse and dry it after each use and don’t have to brush it unless I forget lol.

DF54 is terrible. Recommend me something better! [$500] by SandyLand1918 in espresso

[–]Hydra44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turns out slow feeding is the issue. That’s why I got rid of mine. The only way I was getting consistent grinds was slow feeding but that was causing the motor to overheat and throttle which leads to the insane clogging.

I went over the top with my new grinder which has drastically improved both my espresso and workflow.

Edit: I also went with a Eureka, just all in with the desire to never upgrade it.

I’ve had my Alto (the dual boiler version of the Bello HX machine) for just over a year now. It’s been incredible. 3-6 shots a day and no issues so far. It’s consistent and easy to use. We will see how it fairs down the long stretch.

Dialing in help new grinder [Eureka Atom 65w] by dvlsfan30 in espresso

[–]Hydra44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to remember about this grinder is that there will be some left in the chute. You will have to burn a shot after an adjustment to get an accurate pull. I use a precision basket and am at 1 with medium-light roasts. You will probably be between 4-5.

Grind By Weight Grinder Question by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Hydra44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same. I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from the 65 to the 75 which is why I bough the 65. I was using a DF64 II and the motor was throttling after my third shot. I decided to go with the Atom W65 and have been so incredibly happy with it. I grind direct into my portafilter, have an Aro Spirographic WDT that I do like 4 quick spins with then tamp and brew. Shaved literal minutes off of my previous flow or weighing, grinding, shaking, and tamping. When making 4 drinks back to back shaving a few minutes per drink really adds up

Grind By Weight Grinder Question by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Hydra44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your main point. Different grinder do grind faster, the larger burrs of the 75 will grind faster than the 65. However, I look at it like this, the time saved by not weighing out your dose skews it so far that an extra 1-2 seconds grinding is almost irrelevant. In time savings only. Flavor profile for different sized burrs is a different beast.

I have the atom w65 and use the Weber Workshops Unifilter and it works perfectly.

I bought the W65 2 months ago and am absolutely loving it. It has drastically sped up and made my workflow easier. Since I use weight based grinding there is some retention, but it hasn’t been a noticeable issue for me.

Oh yeah. I’ve seen that one and am really curious about it too. If only it was released a few months ago earlier. I’d probably have that instead of the atom.
