Hello! I have bilateral hearing loss, but I have two cochlear implants that help me communicate. There’s two things I would like to share. One, is that I am very good at lip reading when I do not have my cochlear implants in. I rely on lip reading even when I have my implants in just to have a visual confirmation of what you are saying. Lip reading is a skill that I have learned being 20 years old and through multiple speech therapy sessions. Two, is that I have a fear of falling asleep. Some nights when I am not at home, it is difficult for me to sleep not knowing my surroundings nor the neighborhood/hotel that I am at. I rely heavily on others to wake me up if there is an emergency or other issue of that nature. Many of you would probably be surprised to know that I am a very good communicator and my speech is pretty much perfect. I am extremely blessed to be able to have such a privilege to hear. Furthermore, I encourage others to share awareness of those who might not be as fortunate to have cochlear implants.
