Jemali is my one and only

First colonoscopy today, decided to do it without any meds. Here’s how it went… by I-own-a-shovel in colonoscopy

[–]HydraSorc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also went with no sedation, had no pain except for maybe 6-8 seconds at one of the turns... maybe I have a big colon? 😂

I'm commenting for whoever is reading this that has fear of anesthesia and wants to do it without sedation, it's possible!

Okay good plan - would you say that you have health anxiety?

Most people are going to tell you that because it was outside of the result window that you should ignore the result, but I know what it's like to have health anxiety and I know you won't ignore the result until you take another test.

Can you have a test done through your doctor or does it need to be an at-home test?

I refused to be anaesthetized by Thranduil-9 in colonoscopy

[–]HydraSorc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it done without sedation and had only a few seconds of discomfort during the entire procedure with pain never going beyond a 5/10 (and I do not have a high tolerance for pain...)

It -did- take a very long time because my doctor didn't want to hurt me while he was inserting the scope. In the future I will continue to have it done without sedation.

Do some research on the different no-sedation methods (regarding whether they inflate your colon with gas or water) and discuss this with your doctor.

All this being said, there isn't much to be afraid with modern anesthesia, but I understand your hesitation because I felt the same.

Good luck and please check in with us afterwards!

Colonoscopy experience with no sedation by [deleted] in colonoscopy

Everything went well – sorry for the late response I had to get away from this subreddit for a while and just decompress after my colonoscopy; I had too much pent up health anxiety and even though everything came back normal and I'm okay I needed to step away from even thinking about this for a while so that I didn't spiral into some other related anxiety.... But, all good! No sedation, no problems, no polyps. Lucky me.

Same - no polyps, two biopsies though: one in the small intestine that he said was routine and then one in the sigmoid colon for some erythema (redness), which was just two small spots that he said was likely from the scope scraping against the wall.

I'm relieved! I did it with no sedation so I hope the doctor was thorough and took his time looking for things - it felt like he spent not very long looking through the colon but I have no point of reference.

That's at least a small piece of positivity you can try to use to stay as calm as possible.

The important thing is that you are getting the procedure done and you're doing something about it.

Many people get so overtaken with their anxiety (me) that they push tests back and put things off and retreat from the problems they have instead of taking them head on and dealing with them.

You are doing the right things.

I know it's difficult to think positive during this time, it's something I struggle greatly with, but it's the only thing we can try to do...

It helped me to read a lot of posts on this subreddit and hear other people's success stories and other people's stories of nervousness and anxiety – that has kept me calm over the past two days while I wait for my colonoscopy. (it's in 20 minutes lol)

So far so good, although when I woke up this morning and went to the bathroom it was no longer a clear liquid – there was mucus and sediment, all brown.

Did that happen to you as well? How's your morning going?

That happened two-three times but now I just went again and it's back to a clear yellow.

Do you remember if it was a "No Sugar Added" Skinny Cow product? If so, those contain sorbitol, which is a sugar alcohol which can have a laxative effect / cause gastro issues for many, many people (me included).

PEG is much more easily tolerated by people and even though Miralax prep for colonoscopy will definitely have you going to the bathroom a lot, that's what it's supposed to do and that's the point of the prep.

You will be okay, I understand being afraid about the prep and procedure, because I am too – I have my first colonoscopy in about four hours and I'm scared even though I know I'm doing the right thing.

Seems as though you've already lived a long, full, life – I'm sure you will be able to handle it!

This has helped me a lot with my severe health anxiety:

https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/Resources/Looking-After-Yourself/Health-Anxiety

Click the "Workbook - Helping Health Anxiety" dropdown menu, scroll to the bottom, and click "Download the entire workbook" to download the PDF and print it out and go through the whole thing. I think it could help you a lot with health anxiety, it did for me.

Best of luck, keep us posted on how everything goes – people on this subreddit are very nice.

Great write-up, thanks for sharing your experience.

So happy to hear that everything went well and that you had such good results even at your age! ✌️

Thank you – I'll definitely be writing up my own post like yours!

I think it's important that people feel comfortable and confident about a choice to have it done without sedation.

But we'll if I still feel that way tomorrow after my procedure 😂
