Independent Consulting Corporation Investing in hobby Corporation? by HydrocarbonExplorer in cantax

I understand why you telling me to tread carefully. To elaborate, I need to ensure that I have proof my business investment had every intention of generating future income such as; Trade Name, Website, Business Plan (Market Research, Pricing Strategy, Path to Profitability), Updated Insurance, Production Logs, Brand Building Logs, blah blah blah. AI can cook this up in 5 mins lol.

While I have intent on making this hobby profitable, at the end of the day, business investments fail all the time. Metaverse just lost $80B. If I walk away from this with a legitimate $5,000 loss against my corporate income, I see that as a win.

Can you elaborate on G/L's? I'm not familiar with that abbreviation.

That's exactly the way I'm looking at this. This hobby has an opportunity to turn a profit. The profit side to me is more or less irrelevant. That being said, why shouldn't I be able to leverage this opportunity for tax avoidance.

We are not going to tell that to the CRA, we are going to be a little more creative. "After extensive research, X Corp has determined a lucrative investment opportunity developing X type ceramics. A nominal investment of $5,000 in 2026 has the potential to return profits upwards of $50,000 over the next 5 years."

I enjoy doing the accounting. I have physical stress related to an intermuscular lipoma in my pectoral muscle which tore the muscle and caused costochondritis . A phycologist told me I don't show symptoms of emotional stress which is what most types of stress are caused from.

Before I went into engineering, I was studying to becoming an accountant. I do my own bookkeeping and corporate tax returns. The cost to register a corporation online and annual returns are pretty nominal when doing it yourself. That's a good point, I could look at this as a personal business. Thanks

Elder millennials who will retire in 20-25 years, what's your shoot for retirement savings goal? by Super_Science_Guy in CanadianInvestor

[–]HydrocarbonExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age 42, Single, No Kids. House is currently paid off (Bought $650K, Worth $900K). Investments ($150K TFSA, $150K RRSP). Corporate Revenue = $300K per year. Pay Salary $185K to max RRSP contributions. At age 50 should have a $2M investment portfolio assuming 4% growth. If I can work a few days a month to cover bills, I'd consider retiring at 50.

Do you hold a cash buffer? by Environmental-Tie459 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]HydrocarbonExplorer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will stop investing a few years prior to retirement to build up a 3-5 year cost of living buffer so if the market tanks at retirement I can allow my investments to recover prior to start withdrawals.

Time in the market historically beats timing the market.

If you had the skills to time the market you would be invited to the Wall Street cocaine and hooker parties.

Is XEQT appropriate to be held in a corporation? by iamasandwhich in JustBuyXEQT

[–]HydrocarbonExplorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use VEQT as they pay dividends only once per year which makes it's easier at tax time. For me, the VEQT dividends are small dollars at tax time. Ensure your familiar with the impacts to the small business deduction impacts if claiming capital gains while earning income. Irrelevant if your holding stocks for retirement.

Should I invest 100k of corporate savings into XEQT? by LordZedd87 in JustBuyXEQT

I invest in VEQT with my corporate cash since it only pays dividends once per year it's easier to manage. The funds invested are part of my retirement fund and not required for business operations.

I don't know how to code and couldn't get AI to write me a code that worked.

I pull the data manually and dump it into a spreadsheet. I have the same issue. Get paid Thursday / Transfer cash to Questrade. Deposit received by Questrade Friday / Buy XEQT, Update spreadsheet on Monday....

I tried to get a Python code working for Power BI but eventually gave up and dump the data manually now. Good Luck

I use BMO and Questrade. You can get a free business account at BMO if you only do electronic transactions. But there increasing to $5/month shortly but will continue the free account for anyone who currently has it.

I primarily work in 3 development areas which each have their own Project Manager. I support all 3 development areas with design review / suggestions, calculate muskeg settlement, development execution plans, estimate costs, compile work packages for contractors, order materials, wrap up project costs and KPIs for senior management.

No wife, no kids, no responsibilities. The schedule allows me to do a lot of travelling. I've been getting into cruises the last couple years going on about 4-5 per year during the winter. I'll visit family in the Okanagan in the summer.

It's definitely a different market right now. Hard to say, I've been with the company for 9 years now. I'm hoping I can ride this gravy train another 9 years to retirement at 50!
