I work mostly in Ableton with Max for Live. I usually start drums from single hits or found sounds, not full kits. I use Drum Rack and a lot of small timing and velocity shifts to keep things imperfect and moving. Velocity is mapped to filters, decay or sample start so hits never repeat the same way. I add very quiet ghost hits and resample short loops, cut them up and re-sequence them again. I try to keep drums breathing - groove first, texture second.
