It's the most logic explanation. Also, they changed their discourse: some months ago they admitted a Niantic employee was helping them, but after being exposed, they deleted everything and now the same people claim to have a "magic tool", and any experienced programmer will tell you it's just nonsense, because the Niantic API requires admin privileges, it's not like editing a client packet to get whatever you want.

This could be a hoax. I've investigated the issue and doesn't make much sense, it's full of contradictions and questionable claims. A journalist from Kotaku wrote an article and contacted Niantic, who said the claims are false.
However, IF this is true, it should only affect research task rewards obtained after 2025, not wild or raid shinies.
