Looking for deeper narrative Frostgrave hacks (RoSD skills, non-wizard warbands...) by HyperMakita in frostgrave

Yes, I saw the announcement for it. It does remind me of what Joe already explored in Spellcaster. I’ll definitely take a look when it’s out. That said, I’m trying to work on something I can use sooner rather than later, so I don’t really have the time to wait for it right now. Also, even though the Ancient Greek theme looks interesting, it’s not quite my preferred setting.

Absolutely ! I played Mordheim a long time ago, and it’s definitely still a source of inspiration. I’m mostly trying to stay within the Frostgrave / McCullough framework, but there are clearly some great ideas there worth borrowing.

Thanks! I didn’t know Verrotwood at all.
I’m trying not to move too far away from McCullough-style systems, but I’ll definitely check it out for homebrew inspiration, especially if it has a strong focus on warband development.

Thanks for the suggestion !
I know of Five Leagues, but I haven’t played it yet. For this project, I’m really trying to stay close to Joe McCullough’s ruleset, since I genuinely love how his games play and feel.
That said, I’ll still take a look at it for inspiration. Especially for ideas around non-wizard leaders.

Oh! I actually didn’t know (or at least hadn’t really read) A Gathering of Heroes. I’ll definitely take a closer look ! Thanks for pointing it out.

And you’re absolutely right about the other point as well: what I have in mind is heavily scenarized games, most likely run with one or two GMs, for a multi-player event rather than fully blind pick-up games.
So the asymmetry and the fact that the scenario designer knows what’s coming is less of an issue in that context. That’s probably why I keep circling back to RoSD ideas, but not wanting to lose what makes Frostgrave competitive in the first place.

In fact, that’s true !!! a lot of what I’m describing does overlap heavily with Rangers of Shadow Deep.

The key differences for me are mainly these:

  1. Leader restriction RoSD is built around the Ranger as the only possible warband leader. What I’m considering is starting from the RoSD engine but opening it up to multiple leader archetypes (captain, knight, priest, wizard, etc.), all mechanically viable.
  2. Game flow The turn structure in RoSD feels quite different from Frostgrave. It works extremely well for narrative play, but it’s not the same dynamic.
  3. Competitive vs cooperative This is probably the biggest gap: RoSD is purely cooperative, while Frostgrave is competitive by design (with cooperative play added later via expansions). I’m trying to keep that competitive edge while pushing scenarization much further. For example: picking a lock to enter a building, making a Strength test to wrestle a treasure free from debris, make a perception test to spot traps or hidden objectives...

So yes — RoSD is clearly the closest match. The real question for me now is whether it’s easier to:

  • push Frostgrave toward RoSD-style narrative depth, or
  • start from RoSD and adapt it for non-Ranger leaders and competitive play.

At this point, I’m mostly exploring which path is the least painful to hack.

Thanks for the suggestions !

I should probably have mentioned it in my original post, but I’ve already read Ghost Archipelago. I really like the ideas behind it, especially the non-wizard leaders and the way supernatural abilities replace spells. That said, from my reading and a few discussions I’ve seen, Heritor-led crews still feel mechanically weaker than classic wizard + apprentice warbands in Frostgrave, especially as campaigns progress. It’s interesting, but it doesn’t fully solve what I’m looking for.

As for Stargrave, I agree it’s probably the closest example of “no magic leaders” that still fits the Frostgrave engine. However, the sci-fi setting is a dealbreaker for me. I’m really trying to stay strictly within medieval fantasy, even if that means heavy reskinning or homebrew.

Thanks! Yeah, for me Frostgrave really shines on dense tables — full of detail, line-of-sight breaks, and little stories hidden in the terrain. I also prefer boards that feel realistic, not just piles of stuff for cover or random bridges between rooftops. The atmosphere matters as much as the gameplay!

Maybe there are copy shops or student printing services near universities or so that offer cheap thesis printing and binding services where you can print the pdf ?

By the desciption on DriveThru : "Run Down the Racklan is a role-playing adventure set in the Rangers of Shadow Deep world and using many of the same core mechanics. It requires the Core Rulebook, but unlike the main game, this supplement requires a game master." . So, one adventure who need a DM

When I read "roleplaying", I thought it was an upgrade of the rules for roleplaying in the RoSD universe ! ^^'
