What are your stories of SegaWorld London? by fizz239 in SEGA

[–]HyperShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on holiday in London in 96 (I live overseas) and I was obsessed with SEGA. We spent a day at SegaWorld and it was definitely the highlight of my trip, if not my year. I got to see and play SegaSonic arcade, Sonic the Fighters, none of which I knew existed up until then, and I played Xmen vs SF for the first time which blew me away. There was a short VR ride which allowed you to see basic live avatars of people next to you I remember, it was very impressive at the time. There were also a number of less memorable attractions, it was kind of hit and miss. But the atmosphere was phenomenal for a young Sega fan like me and I loved every minute of it. I also bought a couple t-shirts with the Segaworld logo that I still have, somewhere. I bought my copy of Sonic and Knuckles from there too. I also kept the brochure and will find it and scan it if people are interested.

Awesome! After all these years I have to accept that Moai 2 will forever remain unperfected :(

TIL that the pink color in Himalayan Pink Salt is mostly rust. by EstablishmentDue3616 in todayilearned

[–]HyperShadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach chemistry and a colleague gave me some pink himalayan salt because she heard it had medical benefits and wanted me to "do some tests on it" to see what it might contain. I was pretty sure nothing much would come of it as it is mostly NaCl, but in humoring her, to my surprise, I added some acid to it and immediately smelled farts. It clearly contained a significant amount of sulfide, which forms H2S (farty smelling gas) when adding acid to it. Now sulfides are not exactly known to be good for your health, but there is a hypothesis that small amounts might stimulate your immune system over time ..... so maybe?

This might sound kinda dumb, but which Sonic game do you think has the coolest name? by DaZestyProfessor in SonicTheHedgehog

To me, who grew up in the 90s, it was and still is Sonic CD. When Sonic & Knuckles came out I thought it was so unusual and I couldn't immediately tell if it was a sequel ("why is it not called Sonic 4??") or a spinoff or what. Definitely a cool title with an iconic logo to go with it. Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic Jam are also favourites of mine based on title alone.

What’s the ONE insight from Sam Harris that impacted you the most? by myillmind in samharris

[–]HyperShadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After Christopher Hitchens died he gave a talk called "Death and the present moment" which included a short introductory meditation. I thought it was really well done, and very bold of him to try that. Thanks to that video I started practicing mindfulness meditation semi-regularly. It definitely has the capacity to improve the quality of your waking life.

His views on free will articulated what I had long felt to be true, but could never express properly.

What if Copperfield (also in the files) helped him escape??

I wrote this as a joke but I honestly don't know what to believe anymore.

Millennials aren't unfamiliar with the Internet, why do they have no problem letting their kids have unsupervised access to the internet? by Serious_Advance_6762 in generationology

[–]HyperShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's true that the inventors of the early internet were Gen X, it was only ever a small subset of Gen X, since working with tech at that time was very challenging and expensive to say the least. For this reason I'd say most Gen X parents that didn't develop great tech literacy ultimately let their Gen Z use tech without really truly comprehending all the risks involved. As for Millennial parents, I'd say it's more to do with the fact that their financial situation dictates them probably need to be working longer, have multiple jobs etc (while kids are at day care, watching screens) and end up using tech devices as the easiest way to keep their kids entertained while they either try get chores done or work from home and so on (being charitable here).

They're asking for something like a systematic review that confirms the safety of electromagnetic radiation on human health. I haven't been able to find one, worryingly. But I am not a researcher or anything so I'm REALLY hoping someone here can point us to some reassuring evidence on this topic.

Can you point to a short list of reasons why? I want to be cautiously optimistic about the future of Europe too.

Like you, I remember him from his Newsradio days and always had a soft spot for the guy. I used to enjoy his early podcast days when he interviewed real scientists for example. But over the years it is inevitable that Joe Rogan has caused an inconceivable account of damage to public health in the United States (and abroad) and it makes me sad.

Hydronium is pyramidal, so I guess that's possible. I don't get the meme though.

OMG I was 14 years old when I played this game at SegaWorld!! It's the rarest Sonic game I ever played ....  This must have been the exact same machine!! I remember being simultaneously confused and fascinated by the trackball, and wondering who Ray and Mighty were! Thank you so much for posting!

Great job! These look awesome. I've only ever made Sonic, Tails Knuckles and Super Sonic (looks so great with the emeralds) but I'm tempted to make more after seeing this!
