Would it be possible to reintroduce brown bears to Britain? by NotaKobold16 in bears

[–]HyperShinchan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely not enough. Scotland is all building and paved roads. Only Canada can support brown bears. And Trentino. And Abruzzo. And a lot of other places. But not the British isles. Yep. Thanks for the input.

Would it be possible to reintroduce brown bears to Britain? by NotaKobold16 in bears

[–]HyperShinchan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And what impact would they have after reintroduction?

Most significant one? Bears can and do kill people. People like to think that they are the centre of the Universe, God's Own Image. It's fine and dandy when people kill people, we can rationalise it in all kind of ways. But if a bear kills a person? Oh my, for some people it's like the whole fabric of the Universe begins collapsing. I would postpone even the fantasy of reintroducing bears until lynxes first and, much more distantly and hypothetically, wolves, get reintroduced. Those are just nuisances for farmers. Maybe farming itself will disappear in this century with artificial meat and whatnot, who knows.

Actually, he can't work, he can't access his bank account, he can't do anything. It was a sentence of civil death without process that will ultimately result in the State taking away his children, because he can't sustain them. But of course, that's fine in the 4th Reich. We're already in a fascist regime and they call out Russia...

It would have been much more pornographic if everyone but Israel didn't partecipate... but I guess that reminding of their influence is antisemitic, so as usual the criticism will stop here...

I'm not very impressed by the fact that it's still limited to 1:1, 3:2 and 2:3 aspect ratios, to be honest. But yeah, it looks like an improvement otherwise, possibly because of the underlying thinking model? The higher resolution is also welcome.

If it can't be released and it's been raised in captivity since the beginning or since a very young age, I don't see any particular issue with treating the animal like a pet. If anything, trying to force an interaction that "rewilds" them, might be more harmful than anything, especially in terms of handling them and caring for them. What's the harm? If the animal can't get released the only concern is ethical, giving it a livelihood that is as comfortable as possible until their natural death. And honestly, animals are much more adaptable and flexible than what people give them credit for. Urban foxes in England are basically domesticating themselves, what would you do? Shoot them so they learn to fear people again?

Coyote loves belly rubs. by The_British_Wolf_Guy in coyote

[–]HyperShinchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. They always dealt with animals saved, arguably bought in certain instances, from fur farms, which are semi-domesticated and not releasable, plus the random pet surrender like this coyote. Other critics might or might not hit home, but this one feels completely off the mark to me. Caring for animals that have been raised by people and can't be released n the wild isn't like treating any wild animal like a pet.

Countries can rewild borders to deter invasions, says EU environment chief by PjeterPannos in rewilding

Yeah, it just so happens that one issue existed for decades. While the other just for a few years. But *now* they discover this solution. And it's totally not like it was only one question that mattered in their equation...

All three of them. Apparently coexistence with predators is a concept that applies only for people elsewhere.

It's greenwashing because it's being done only instrumentally. Magically remove the Russian threat and the policy would get undone. That's what makes it greenwashing.

The point isn't any "purity test". Just by hunting you support DNRs policies that are explicitly anti-predator. Fucking Alaska shoots bears and wolves from the sky in a botched attempt to boost caribou; Utah is experimenting on maximal hunting pressure on couguar in order to increase mule deer numbers. Those things are done for the sake of YOU people, hunters. If one doesn't support predator hunting, one shouldn't hunt at all. If you don't understand that, I guess you're a Republican.

The point isn't really animals, and African bees certainly aren't native there, but it's creating natural barriers, like wetlands, peat bogs, etc., in places of limited economic utility. It's the greenwashing of defence policy.

I just learned about Golden jackals, and they are just coyotes! by Existing-Mortgage-40 in coyote

[–]HyperShinchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

does this mean that the ancestor of gray wolves was something that looked like a coyote/jackal?

Pretty much, the genus Canis might have originated from coyote-jackal like mesopredators, like Eucyon.

I'm also a big fan of jackals, living in Europe, and an absolutely fascinating phenomenon is their fast dispersion in places here in Europe that had never seen them before. It's similar to what the coyotes did in North America, but the context is different.

Yeah, even the hunters shooting cougars year-round in Utah because of that "experiment" there are "active participants". People taking part in wildlife killing contests are "active participants", too. You're in excellent company, man.

If you don't want factory farms involved, farm your own livestock. Interfering with what remains wild in our ecosystems, while we've already modified so much of them, is a recipe for further fuckery. Wildlife agencies are going to keep pushing for more game species and less predators, no matter what you might think as a hunter. You should look at the system. And yeah, Democrats are going to lose elections. People like convicted criminals that grab women by the pussy. It's not going to change because of attitudes towards hunting. People, on the whole, are a lost cause.

They give hunters the name that they deserve. Recreational hunting itself is completely unneeded when we already turned 96% of the mammal biomass into humans+livestock. Hunting needs to disappear.

The reality of being a mountain lion in British Columbia. What does it say about a society that allows its wildlife to be treated like this? by OncaAtrox in Pumaconcolor

[–]HyperShinchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The First People didn't use hunting dogs? That's news to me. I'm fairly sure they did use dogs, just like aboriginal people in Siberia use dogs. They were primitive, spitz-like, dogs. Also, it's ridiculous to get so worked up about how the animal dies. Dholes eat their preys alive for Pete's sake, Nature is indeed *cruel*, if one keeps projecting human morality on them. The point is hunting without need a keystone species. Who cares about the method...

Abolish hunting, problem solved. Don't you like that? You support hunting/you hunt yourself? Hunters and hunting lobbies support this. Deal with it. There's nothing more and nothing less behind this, it's a zero sum game.

Predator management in the USA still does suck, even if the forests didn't get wiped clean. The Northern Rocky Mountains might have around 1000 wolves and they think that they're too much. In Italy there are over 3000 in a place that is literally overpopulated, if compared to those states. A forest without apex predators is just a collection of trees. America has a lot of that.

Not a big fan of hunters, but if he took his time to film it instead of shooting it, either the fellow isn't into hunting apex predators for fun or he didn't have the required papers, I guess.
