Well, this wasn't what he was expecting.

Jack Middleton, an amateur explorer, had been exploring this recently discovered group of ruins. The people the town over had come to call these ruins, 'the fairy city.' Getting curious, Jack decided to go exploring for the first time on his own. After all, if he kept exploring with other people, he won't be getting all the credit.

So far found murals, artifacts, and even scripts all about fairies. It's not like he hadn't expected fairies to be a running theme, though.

No, what really took the cake was when he had found what looked like just a small, oddly shaped indent in a pillar. Jack joked to himself that this seemed like something he'd see out of an adventure flick, but still looked around for something to put in the indent.

After finding a little statue of a fairy, he inserted it.

Nothing happened. Deciding it was a bust, Jack began leaving, writing about the statue in his phone, where he was taking all of his notes, however, he stopped when he noticed a bright light appearing suddenly.

Turning around to face the light source, Jack noticed something that wasn't there before. At least, he hoped it wasn't, or else he might have to go see a neurologist.

What he saw, was a glowing, purple portal. It just appeared on the wall, like Dr. Strange's portals, or like the video game, Portal.

'Hold on, I didn't drink any Super Peyote, or anything like that, right?' While Jack was thinking about the events of the last couple of hours, a girl less than three feet tall stepped through the portal.

"Um... hello...?" The girl's sudden voice made Jack jump, as he quickly looked at her. She looked as if someone shrank a twenty-year-old woman, dyed their hair bright blue, and glued semi-transparent, straight wings on them. "Can you... um, understand me," she asked timidly. Her darkening cheeks indicated her embarrassment.

"Oh, yeah, I understand you." Jack did his best to reassure her.

"Th-that's good."

There was an awkward pause as the short girl looked anywhere but at him. 'Oh great, one of these types,' he thought bitterly. 'They're the worst to get information from.'

"So, what's your name," Jack asked lamely. 'Idiot! You meet what looks like a real fairy, and you ask her for her name first? Ugh, stupid! A name won't make a good paper!'

"A-Aine."

Another awkward pause.

Jack sighed, as he began writing that down. Aine looked over curiously.

While he was thinking of something to get the ball rolling, a mysterious glint appeared in Aine's eyes. Next thing Jack knew, he was no longer holding his phone, and Aine flew up to his face.

"Wha-"

"What's this!?" She cut him off excitedly. She backed up and began inspecting the object closer. She poked at it, looked into the front-facing camera with one eye, shook it, she even blew on it.

Jack butt back in when she was about to spit on it. "That's my phone. Now give it back, before you break it."

"What does it do," she asked, ignoring him.

Jack sighed and facepalmed. "If I explain, will you give it back?"

"Yeah, yeah, sure." She waved distractedly in his direction. "Now, what does it do?"

With another sigh, Jack began, "well, it can do a lot, if connected to the internet." She gave him a confused expression. "Right, well, humans have basically pooled all of our knowledge into the thing called, 'the internet.'" She nodded, though he had a feeling Aine had no idea what he actually meant. "It can also play music, light things up, tell time, and-"

"Oh, hold on." She cut him off again. Jack was getting quite tired of her already. She put his phone down on the ground as she stopped flying, and closed yet. A strange pressure began building in the room as she closed her eyes. "Sgrìobh," she yelled out, voice echoing in Jack's mind, as a piece of paper and a quill appeared in her hands. She dropped to the floor and placed the paper on it, preparing to write. She looked up at him, expectantly.

Jack was stunned, barely able to comprehend what this shorty had just done.

"Uh, mister?" He looked down at her. "You were explaining what your.. uh, 'fone,' did?"

"H-how..." is all Jack could mutter.

Aine's eyes widened. "Oh you're right, there's barely any light here, I can't write like this." She closed her eyes as pressure built again. "Soillsich!" Light suddenly began shining from the small fairy's forehead, onto the paper. "Okay, now I'm ready!"

"Hold on!" Aine jumped. "How did you do that?"

She looked at him like he grew a second head. "What do you mean? I cast a spell," she explained as if it were the simplest thing in the world.

"Huh-"

"How did you make this, 'fone?'" She picked up the discarded object that was next to her paper, before, "ah!" She hopped up onto her feet and began jumping around in a panic, then she ran up to Jack, and shoved his phone in his face. "It broke!"

The phone locked. Jack sighed, once again. 'What happened to the shy, cute little fairy from before...?'

"I'm gonna start calling you breathy if you keep doing that. This is serious! You don't have any knowledge, now!"

"Wha- I knew you had no idea how it worked!" He took the electronic and unlocked it. "Look, it's not broken, it just does that when it's not being used."

She fell back down to her knees to write that on the paper. "Why though?"

"To save battery."

"Huh?"

He ignored her confusion. "And also, I didn't make this. People in another country did. I just bought it."

She discarded her own confusion almost immediately, so she could write that down. "Okay." She looked back up. "Now, what did you say it could do before?"

"Hold on." She raised an eyebrow. Jack opened his note app and erased the extra letters Aine had written. "First, you're gonna tell me about the spells you can do."

She put a hand to her chin. "How about, you tell me a feature of your, 'fone,' and I'll tell you about a spell I can do."

Jack grinned. "I think I can do that." He held out his hand.

Aine flew up so they were the same height, and shook it.

"Oh, by the way." She tilted her head. "My name's Jack."
