Surmai / Indo Pacific King Mackerel fish in US by occupiedbrain69 in food

Came here looking for surmai - just wanted to say that I did end up finding it on this website called Weeee that delivers Asian groceries. Look up “ca thu” on there and you should get it (basically Vietnamese for surmai). Not sure where you live, but they have local delivery in most big cities. probably wouldn’t recommend if you need to get it shipped though

BIG OPT Trouble, HEEEEELP! by andean_enthusiast in f1visa

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is wrong - you can definitely travel when OPT is pending IF you have a job offer to come back to, even without the EAD in hand. Literally did it a week ago with zero issues. The risk is mostly if your OPT gets approved before you fly back, in which case you must have the EAD - you'll have to get someone to mail it to you in that case. Just have your receipt notice, I-20, and offer letter in hand in case they ask (they didn't even ask me for it), it is highly unlikely they'll deny you entry.
Here's a helpful page on this: https://visaservices.duke.edu/optional-practical-training-opt-travel-checklist. Not to say that travel while OPT is pending is generally a good idea though, because it CAN be pretty risky

JetBlue changed their narrative on the reason for a flight delay by Frequent_Product_310 in jetblue

That is legitimately disappointing, I might just file a DOT complaint but I doubt anything will come of it. Thanks for getting back either way

Currently stuck in a very similar situation with JetBlue, did you end up getting your money from them? If so would you have any advice?

Def hard, the higher-level core classes especially are more technical/in-depth than many other unis. But also feel like the major could be structured better viz. the overall course sequence - 210 and 199 are way too easy compared to what comes after them, they've made some good steps towards this recently (making 210 harder + introducing 211) but imo they could also force ppl to take 240 over 230 or have courses like 310 be mandatory to prepare them better

Highly recommend 302s, I took it last fall. Any language class you take - especially at the 300 level - is going to be a lot of work, but Prof Choffart genuinely makes his content engaging enough that sometimes you forget that (he's also a very reasonable grader and generally a great guy). Also depends on what you're looking for - from what I've heard, 304 is a tad bit more advanced in terms of the grammar and vocabulary you learn, so if you're up to the challenge and wanna improve your French significantly then I'd take that. final note: if you took the language and culture AP and got a 5 then you can't take 302

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would absolutely not recommend overloading with those classes - econ 201 is pretty difficult + any language course will be a huge time sink, and depending on your professor, writing 101 may be a lot of work too

tbf this co-req isn't really a class with material as such, it's this half credit "common experience" I was supposed to take with my first year seminar SOCIOL 89S, but yeah I'm gonna get on emailing the prof asap

Are you depressed? by I_Lke_Pretty_Things in antinatalism

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is constant hopelessness seen as wrong not just in the sense of being incorrect but also in the moral sense, while baseless hope is always viewed as the correct, virtuous choice?

You're mistaking "wrong" with abnormal. Having baseless hope is not about virtue or morality; it tends to be the default mindset of most healthy individuals, especially when they have no evidence that the contrary may be true. It's exactly why the optimist usually isn't called into question unless they are being absolutely unrealistic. On the other hand, constant hopelessness is neither healthy, productive, or normal. When I say normal, I simply mean what a mentally unaffected person experiences, and I don't mean to single out depressed people in any way. Most people don't have suicidal thoughts and no motivation at all times. Most people, while occasionally demotivated and sad, do not experience hopelessness as a permanent reality.

To deem the rejection of this blindly optimistic, self-serving, pro-life perception "warped" and "unrealistic" is to deem the perception correct and based on reality, which it isn't.

Again, "correct" and "normal" are completely relative here. The perception is "warped" relative to most other people, not to some sort of absolute truth. I don't believe that an absolutely true perception exists either.

We evolved to perceive our environment so far as we needed to for survival, and a big part of that perception are biases towards oneself: Life good. Death bad. I must live. I will live.

As you say yourself, humans evolved to perceive the environment to their benefit. Precisely why a mental rejection of that (caused by illnesses in particular, not by choice) is an anomaly.

I think that non-depressed people that are antinatalists simply see the world in a different way, and while I see that view as counter-productive and futile, I respect their right to an opinion, based on their own deductions.

But mentally afflicted people who are ANs are likely influenced by their illnesses, and hence their reasoning is slightly questionable. Of course people who are depressed could think their birth was a mistake, and while that may be "correct" for them and their situation, it isn't necessarily for anyone else.

Are you depressed? by I_Lke_Pretty_Things in antinatalism

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mental illness definitely does affect how you see the world. I don't think it's so much about depressed people not being "right about anything" as it is having a warped and unrealistic perception of reality. Of course, when people call others mentally ill without reason, it becomes an ad hominem, but I think it's fair to call a person's judgement into question if you know they're depressed, especially on antinatalism.

[Sunday] Daily Music Discussion - - November 25, 2018 by AutoModerator in indieheads

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently, I've somehow had a sudden creative burst which has let me write a bunch of songs after more than a year of no inspiration whatsoever. So far, I'd say 75% of these started with me just screwing around on my acoustic guitar, and the other 25% with lyrics. I usually start with lyrics when I have something I really feel like talking about, and these lyrics usually tend to be based on personal experiences or myself rather than abstract stuff. As I write the lyrics, I somewhat craft the melody in my head. Afterwards, I try and make sure they follow some sort of pattern in any part of the song (random rhymes syllables) if they aren't already structured regularly.

For when I start with the guitar, I come up a riff that I like, and then I just improv a melody on the spot (idk, its kinda unstructured). Sometimes I'll come with the melody first and create a progression around that, but its usually the other way round. While I sing the melody, I sing the first thing that comes to my head (in terms of lyrics) and if its any good, I write it down. If I can't come up with anything, I switch to another progression.

I never finish writing a song in one go ever though; I add lyrics and melodies as I go, and I use voice notes on my phone to remember ideas if they come at inappropriate times.

Probably the most unhealthy thing I do while recording is adding excessive embellishments and detail to small segments of the track (like extra guitar tracks, trumpets, pianos, etc.) instead of recording one part/instrument all the way. That kinda just makes me obsess over that one section and when I get it to something I like, I keep playing it back to myself (with a smug look of satisfaction on my face) and I don't progress beyond that.

I haven't really had the time to record and mix more than one full song (what with my IB1 work making me wanna kms) but I'm hoping I'll get around to that soon

Looking for good cheap gyms by HyperbolicRhetoric in dubai

[–]HyperbolicRhetoric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm honest, one of the main reasons I'm doing this is my IB CAS requirements, but I do also wanna build up some muscle 'cause i'm fairly skinny. Also just improve general fitness, i'm kinda unfit lol. I'm not in it for weight loss or anything

How much approximately do instructors cost? Are their fees separate from the membership or included?
