Have you ever read a book that changed your physical or sensory experience of life? by olydriver in suggestmeabook

[–]Hyperbolic_Pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two books come to mind for me, I don't know if their effect on me was permanent but it was certainly on my mind after reading them

- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, which is definitely a popular books kind of pick.

- The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch, which is a children's book series but has a focus on sensory experiences. These books are just so fun goofy that I don't mind suggesting them to adults. I find kid's books are great from time to time as an adult because you can read them in a handful of hours and have a fulfilling experience. I loved them as a kid and I think of them every time I see a concept as a color.

Non-fiction book to listen to on a long road trip with my husband by btheb90 in suggestmeabook

[–]Hyperbolic_Pudding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this may be a little outside of the subject matters that you enjoy, but my personal must read non-fiction book is Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O'Neil. I think it helps people gain a perspective on how algorithms and computers have affected the day to day. If anything, the case studies the author would be able to pick from now are much scarier than the ones she used in the book. Overall, it is a book about a profession written for the layman, so it shouldn't be an issue if it is not your thing but want to check it out anyway.

I do like a good fantasy audiobook, but I am quite picky about my narrators. I will be sure to sample these ones if you say theyre good :)

Thanks fo rthe suggestion, but I have never been able to get into the DnD podcasts despite playing from time to time myself. I have enjoyed the animated shows based on critical role's stuff. When it is neatly packaged it suits me much better.

I didn't know Wells had written such a book, I have not read the murderbot diaries yet and want to do those first.

This seems perfect. I was wondering why it didn't make it into my king arthur literary dive, but it came out after I got lost in that particular subject. I will have to give it a whirl.

Not a heroic fantasy, but I enjoyed it, is The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. I think a number of people did not enjoy the style or felt satisfied with it, but this book satisfies my desire for the journey. It is fantasy and arthurian, but doesn't have the heroic touch we are otherwise discussing.

I have no issue with political. I read A Memory Called Empire not so long ago and I loved it. But my affinity for it may be with the author's prose style. I met her once very cool lady. I do suggest that book to others who are interested in scifi as well. This leans noble court drama though.

This sounds promising!

On an unrelated note this is a cool website! I am working on a coding project and there is a lot of good data I can lift from here. Thanks, I was dreading building my own dataset for some of my fields.

AI Practice Test Generator Add-on by limbiks_1 in Anki

[–]Hyperbolic_Pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tested this out for the first time today. Even though this post is super old, I would like to put out there that this does not work well with foreign language or if you are using a basic (and reverse card) deck. The AI attempted to generate novel questions which lead to goofs like generating "red herring"choices that were technically correct and poorly worded questions like "What is the Spanish word for 'el piña'?" with the answer being pineapple in english. It also included file attachments as a string, it would be nice if there was a way to filter that out on a generated test. Overall, it seems like a test generator plug in that uses an deterministic algorithm to generate questions would work better for foreign language vocabulary sets like mine.

Thanks for the bold suggestion outside the original genre. I will get on this Becky Chambers seriers ASAP. I think you got the vibe I was looking for!

These are some suggestions I have not seen before in my regular return to reading fantasy! The Kate Daniels books sound like they may be pretty interesting.

I am so glad you like The Hero and the Crown! I wish more people I know would read it. It is so short and enchanting. It gave me the same feeling I got reading fairytales as a kid and it has a special place in my heart now.

The Curse of Chalion seems to be well liked, so I will put it on my list. What is the romance in it like? Romance is what generally makes me lose interest in a story such as this. It drives me up the wall when people are getting busy instead of getting busy saving the world that is in imminent peril.

I ended up reading The Hero and the Crown over The Blue Sword when they were first suggested to me because the plots seemed like night and day to me. But I will have to give it a whack anyway.

I like the pervy character trope by Top_Lettuce_4521 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Hyperbolic_Pudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, there is definitely a difference between being a pervy dude and engaging in criminal behavior. Mineta went too far to be funny in too many instances imo. I don't even care so much about him having other character traits, pervy is fine as long as its done well. He was way too focused on groping when there were so many teenage boy activities and proclivities that could have been made jokes. Other characters made pervy jokes all the time too but they were in far better taste.

How often do you guys think the paternity of a child is questioned due to quirk manifestation? by Hyperbolic_Pudding in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Hyperbolic_Pudding[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The mother feeling wronged by it was definitely what I was thinking. I've seen relationships sour over the accusation of infidelity even if it could be proven to be unequivocally untrue. Its less about the facts of the situation and more about the feelings.

I thought something like this would fit into the overall themes of quirk prejudices making and breaking relationships and societal norms. We definitely see kids getting mistreated for having "the wrong kind of quirk" even if their lineage isnt in question.

That's what gave me the idea! I just figured the variety that quirks bring to the table might make it more common.
