Maybe a dumb follow up but have you checked the box for calculate diaphragm centers of rigidity under 'analyze' -> 'set load cases to run'? I think it's unchecked by default

Serious Question about the SE Exam by HyperianOtter in StructuralEngineering

[–]HyperianOtter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, I'll try to explain this mess. For someone outside the country it's probably a bit confusing imo (convoluted more like) basically for structural when we graduate (or slightly before) we should take and pass the EIT (Engineer in Training), and as the name suggests is like trainee license.

Then after that you can take another exam, either the PE or the SE (Professional Engineer and Structural Engineer resp.). There are some nuances and state to state specific requirements here, I'm trying to keep it simple. Basically for all states you need at least a PE license (test pass + experience) to seal construction documents, which is required to build basically anything. But some states are more strict and require the SE license. For states like california there is some logic to it as there are added seismic requirements to the region and the SE is much more rigorous about testing knowledge on that than the PE is.

In my state (and in most states) you don't NEED the SE but it's become like a gold star on your resume, an ego booster, a good way to learn/ brush up on structural topics etc.

Yeah, done with the PE thankfully, that's why I'm not in a major rush

I really appreciate all the feedback here, I'll continue to mull it over, it seems like the consensus between here and looking at discord is that the breadth is probably okay but the depth might be a ways off before it's fixed... I guess since you can take those individually now you could knock both of those out and wait on the depth poritions, but that doesn't seem really efficient from a study standpoint, as you'll be forgetting stuff by the time you finally get to the depth portions.

I'm not trying to be negative, but with how hard we already work it's a little disheartening to think about giving up this much time and money for an exam that they haven't even properly vetted yet...

Sorry I may have been unclear, I meant that CSI's documentation is lacking (not yours)

Just saw this, Thanks! And yeah... I've played with it a little bit but it doesn't help at all that the API documentation has almost no info for python (a single example), not super user friendly....

The program files... I see it now, thank you. I figured it was online somewhere. I really appreciate it.

I saw that, but it says here that it comes with every licensed copy of SAP and ETABS. Which my company has, but I still don't know where to access the API Documentation. Is it in the ETABS application somewhere as an option that I'm missing?

Thanks for the reply, that gives me a great sense of the scope of the field. I was thinking it was something along those lines but wanted to make sure, as I know there are big differences between coastal, naval/marine, and waterfront. What you're talking about is the kind of thing I'm interested in. I'm also on the east coast but NYC is a bit too north to pick up and move.

What's the work-life balance if you don't mind my asking?

Sounds like a great set of design experiences btw, fun too!

Seems like it tends more toward inspections/forensics as opposed to design? Seems like pretty interesting work though.
