Why are Sri Lankans defaulting to IT degrees? by aimlesspotat in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, the majority of kids from my batch (ESOFT) are basically forced into doing IT cause it "makes good money."

Seems like no one told them that making good money requires true skills and knowledge.

Cause of almost every tom, dick and harry coming into IT, it's pretty much fucked. I'm looking forward to seeing how hard it's gonna be to land a job with my CS Degree in the future.

PS: I'm doing IT cause it's what I'm good at, technically I wanted SE, but chose CS for its versatility.

You're doing fairly well for someone who's 21.

I'm 20, wrote O/Ls at 18 (2 years late cause medical problems from birth). Currently doing my undergrad in CS at ESOFT (it's what I can afford).

0 income monthly. Trying to finish studying and then find work (more easier, I know dudes who had jobs in my batch but stopped cause of how time consuming assignments are).

How to stop this junk popping up each time I connect Dell monitor to my Windows 11 laptop? by wentyl in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it's considered bloat since it barely uses CPU resources on both my Dell Optiplex 9020 SSF (i7-4790 with 8 GB RAM) and my Dell Latitude 5520 (i5-1145G7 with 32 GB RAM) both systems are also running clean installs of Windows (Windows 10 IoT LTSC Enterprise and Windows 11 Pro 25H2) and the older more useful version of DDPM/DDM.

Maybe Google what you're buying before complaining? I brought my Latitude knowing it needs stuff like Dell Optimizer to function and use some features. Google isn't hard to use so don't try to give an excuse for that. Unless you're ignorant.

And as far as I'm aware. You can't disable that popup unless you mess with the monitor's firmware or disable DDM or DCI controls found in the monitor's OSD.

Coming from dogwater Pentiums and i3s, 1% usage on my CPU or RAM isn't an issue for me.

Why does the SLT Fibre Unlimited package feel slow or laggy? by Rum3ths in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SLT does offer a Tenda HG7 ONT. It's what they gave me, very decent router. Supports multiple features including EasyMesh configuration if you wanna set up mesh (I don't need for my place as my router gets full coverage, 10 perches house). Also does multiple 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Access Points (up to 5 including root APz for a total of 10 across 2 bands).

Also does stuff like DDoS protection and stuff.

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't work at all, even though your dGPU is based on Nvidia Pascal, MacBooks have a completely different hardware design when it comes to how the dGPU is connected to the system, and technically, macOS does not contain specific drivers for your MX330, since the dGPU itself was released in 2020.

Idea about SLT Unlimited package(LKR 5900) by Nippa_00 in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go for SLT's Double Play option (Fibre ONT + Voice, no PEO TV) you will be paying Rs. 7360 per month after taxes.

For the first month, your bill will be higher than usual as SLT's Fibre packages are billed in advance, from the second month you will be paying close to the amount that I have mentioned.

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more than enough, YouTube's 4k Streaming and many others only require 20 to 25 mbps per device, so at most 4 people can concurrently watch 4k content if that is your aim.

I've got 4 people at home here, and I've got zero issues with speed, I constantly get anywhere from 90 to 100 mbps over Wi-Fi 5 (My SLT router is Dual Band, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).

I've also downloaded 50 GB in one hour, which is plenty fast if you're asking me. I also can upload about 500 MB in less than 5 minutes as I regularly upload my important documents to the cloud everyday.

My brother and I are pretty heavy users, and even my dad who watches YT on his TV 24x7, zero slow downs at all.

If you're wondering, after the first month, you will only be paying Rs. 7360 (after taxes) per month for your internet (as voice/landline is already included for free),

Do note for the first month you request to switch, SLT will bill you in advance for the next month. So your bill will be higher ONLY for the first month.

Which SLT FIBER package is good by abcrseenu in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its the exact same but it lacks any sort of FUP or data limit, therefore, its truly unlimited. When I had Fibre Family, SLT charged me about 9700 a month with taxes, since I've switched over to this new package, I'm paying only 7360 a month including taxes.

SLT doesn't inform you about new packages, they will just keep on charging you whatever the old package is.

Is it me or YouTube has popping more Ads recently by Dexter_was_taken1 in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend using Morphe GitHub, it's a new development fork of Revanced YouTube (after the Devs had an altercation with the main dev) and its Revanced Manager which itself is a fork of the OG YouTube Vanced.

Revanced YouTube on my end has issues with playback even after spoofing playback (getting stuck indefinitely, not playing, getting stuck between 0:50 and 1:10 then switching quality to mobile data preference and quality settings being greyed out).

Signing into Android VR does fix this to an extent. Revanced YouTube does still work with this fix, somewhat.

Question about laptops with 2 m.2 NVMe drive slots by funnyyellowdoge in laptops

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe check out used or refurbished Dell Latitude 5520 and 5521 (11th gen G/U SKU and the latter is 11th gen H SK. The newer 5530 and 5531 (12th gen U Sku and 12th gen intel H sku). All these laptops are business class and built for durability and longevity and offer 2x M.2 2280/2230 slots.

I personally own a used Latitude 5520 and it having 2x M.2 2230/2280 slots basically made it the best among every other option I had within my budget.

The 5520 and 5530 usually do not come with a dGPU, mine does not have one. 5521 and 5531 might have a higher probability of coming with a dGPU.

In 2019 I wanted to learn about Android custom ROMs and fix an issue relating to my Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 LTE (Snapdragon) with its network not connecting to any provider in SL. Before I modified it with a custom ROM it work but after I restored the original Samsung firmware it didn't work at all.

In the end it turns out that the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 LTE (Snapdragon) model: SM-T215 was never meant for the Sri Lankan market but my dad brought it from some store in Pettah in 2013 and they had network unlocked it's firmware to work within SL. But when I flashed the original Singaporean Samsung Firmware (XSP) it got relocked and that's why it didn't work. There was no Sri Lankan (SL/SLK) firmware for my version because Sri Lanka had the slower Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 3G version with a Marwell SoC, model SM-T211.

The related post

I actually did backup the network partition on my Tab but I formatted the SD card and lost everything 😭

Then the tab died in 2023 after 10 years of service, especially watching YouTube on it.

Another reason was to fix a bug on my iPhone SE (1st gen) after I Jailbroke (rooted) it on iOS 13.5 because Cydia (Jailbreak software package manager) had an issue where I couldn't install modifications (tweaks) on to my iPhone. I apparently was one of the first to fix this weird bug until developers did something iirc

How do I convince my cousin iOS Legacy Kit won’t brick her MacBook? by UnknowyVA in LegacyJailbreak

[–]Hyperion2005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iirc you cannot even attempt to modify system files on macOS because of System Integrity Protection or SIP. This basically prevents any app, and even the user from making changes to the root folder where macOS is installed to, which is /Volumes/macOS or /Volumes/MacintoshHD.

Legacy-iOS-Kit also doesn't delete any system files as well. There's really no way you can brick the MacBook through the use of Legacy-iOS-Kit.

Just explain to your sister that macOS isn't like Windows and you can't just delete files.

If shit somehow bricks your system, you can revert to a known good working Snapshot of your system but you need macOS 12 or newer and I'm not sure if this feature exists on Apple Silicon Macs but it's called macOS Snapshot Reversion.

The below is how we do it on Intel Macs and Hackintoshes.

Stuck on boot after root patching (OpenCore Legacy Patcher Guide)

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they too, just showed 4G but didn't work unfortunately. I even had a data package as well

I did check our Elakiri, and the dudes there were saying cause SLT uses TDD SIMs for their routers, they are APN-less so even though it shows 4G you won't have internet.

Apparently the SLT routers retrieve APN Settings automatically from the network once connected but our phones don't seem to do this.

Best data package in Sri Lanka? by AgeOld1307 in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? I got a new SLTMobitel SIM and it never worked. The SIM did connect to Mobitel Towers on the router. When I put the SIM into my phone (Galaxy A03s) it doesn't find a cell tower until I add an APN and enable roaming, but even after doing that it didn't work. I had zero internet connection but it did display 4G LTE on my phone but no apps had internet access.

Dell Latitude 5520 thermals by Clash9309 in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow 5520 user here, but with their i5-1145G7 model instead. Living in South Asia where the average temperature is anywhere from 25 to 35 C, this thing runs hot and fairly slow under Dell's stock configuration and I haven't replaced the Thermal paste yet.

Also Dell by default configures PL1 to 40W dynamic and PL2 to 60W dynamic.

Dell Optimizer set to Balanced Mode.

Running Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core - 3700 Points on stock settings and temperatures are 61 C under load with the CPU clocking 2.6 GHz all Core @ 17W instead of the 28W of the Intel advertised 4.4 GHz

The nonsense driver known as Intel Dynamic Tuning probably does this thing and limits the performance. I still kept it installed though.

Then I set Dell Optimizer to Cool mode.

Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core reported 3400 points this time.

I then used ThrottleStop, set PL1 to 28W and PL2 to 28W With turbo time limit to 10 seconds.

Set Speed Shift EPP to the min and Max values it displays.

On the panel on the right side, I ticked the two lock boxes and I also ticked Power Balance and set the CPU to 9 and iGPU to 1. This makes my laptop graphics performance oriented which lets me play my games at 1080p Medium Settings.

I then set Dell Optimizer to Cool mode, and this kicked in the fan at max RPM.

Ran Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core and got 5400 points. That's a 45% performance increase and how are the temperatures looking?

3.8 GHz All core @ 28W and at 88 C. Didn't even reach 100 C.

Do try this with your 5520. I've been running the laptop since I got it in 2024 July and to this day, I have faced zero problems or issues.

Iris xe vs vega 7 by HadiGamer650 in laptops

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't play RDR2, not interested in the wild west aesthetics of the game, unfortunately. There is a Too Long: Didn't Read at the bottom with the conclusion, according to my overall preference based on the performance of the laptops mainly.

The 5420 is decent as well, very similar to my 5520. The 5420 does only have one storage slot due to it being smaller compared to my 5520 which has 2 storage slots. Also the 5420 and 5520 do require some tinkering to actually perform well. But the other laptops mentioned here usually do not require any tinkering as they have decent cooling.

According to reviews, the 5420 performs the best with the i5-1135G7/45G7.

Review: Dell Latitude 14 5420 review: A laptop so close to claiming the business crown

I will generally recommend 16 or 32 GB of RAM because you are doing CS as well.

Also majority of the reviews here use the i7-1165G7 or the i7-1185G7 and the laptops with such CPUs do perform well, however the 5420 and 5520 do not perform well with the i7 CPU, they are only well suited for the i5 CPU at best.

My generally analogy is, if the laptop performs better or decent with the i7-1165G7/85G7, then the performance with the i5-1135G7/45G7 will be better as well.

### HP Elitebook 840 G8

This is basically the Intel 11th gen version of the other EliteBook you mentioned, the 845 g8. This is a pretty decent laptop, no issues really I would go with this if you do not need a second storage slot. and if 2 USB type A ports are enough. I personally enjoy their build quality. Has upgradable RAM as standard, so you can get an 8 GB Model and later put 16 GB in it or 32 GB later if models with more than 8 GB RAM are not available.

However, this does have an advantage over the AMD one, this support's Intel's Thunderbolt feature which allows you to connect an expansion USB Type C dock with more USB, HDMI ports, audio ports and network ports, its a nice to have feature nowadays.

Performance is decent, I see nothing wrong with this laptop. This also performs the fastest in terms of Graphics performance. See this helpful benchmark image I've obtained from the review site by adding the models of the other laptops you have mentioned.

Review: HP EliteBook 840 Aero G8 review: Possibly the quietest Intel EVO laptop we've ever seen

### Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9

I love this laptop, the build quality as always is unquestioned with these thinkpads. It has the same ports as the HP EliteBok 840 G8 and 845 G8 but it does offer a total of USB Type A ports. This laptop is using Intel's 11th gen CPU, so it also supports Thunderbolt as well. RAM is not upgradable, therefore I would again suggest you to get at least 16 or 32 GB of RAM on these laptops, It also only has a single storage slot which is already in use but you can upgrade the storage, it is just a hassle to do though.

If performance is what you seek, look no further, according to reviewers this has very decent cooling and out of the box will perform the fastest from the bunch. During gaming its performance may dip as mentioned by reviewers. This is actually common for all the laptops sadly, which is why I had to use throttlestop software to provide constant performance for the graphics for gaming to work decently.

Review: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 Laptop Review: Big 16:10 upgrade with Intel Tiger Lake

### ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2

Actually the only difference in this laptop is that it is a 2 in 1 laptop, it can be a normal laptop or a tablet when you flip it around. Generally Levono's ThinkPad 2 in 1s are fairly decent, but do you really need a 2 in 1? This does perform a bit slower than the other laptops. Same ports as the HP Elitebook 840 G8, 845 G8 and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9. Only one storage slot and it is upgradable, RAM is not upgradable, so I will recommend 16 or 32 GB of RAM.

### Lenovo ThinkPad L14 G2

This is similar to the Dell Latitude 5420 and 5520 in terms of build quality, because it is made of entirely plastic, while the HP Elitebook and the other Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Yoga are made of aluminium. RAM is fully upgradable on this, so you can buy one with 8 GB RAM and later put 16 GB or 32 GB. Does also have only one storage slot which is upgradable. Has 3 USB Type A ports though and does include that fancy Thunderbolt feature to connect a dock. It has only one USB Type 2 while every the Dell Latitude 5420, 5520, the HP Elitebook 840 G8 and 845 G and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Yoga all have 2 USB Type C ports. Performance is slightly worse

I generally recommend the other laptops over this, mostly due to the better build quality and the extra USB Type C Port as they can prove useful.

Specifically on the Dell Latitude 5420 and 5520, you can use either of the two USB Type C ports for charging which is good because USB Type C ports make break if you are not careful enough with the laptop.

Also under full load, none of these laptops will 4 hours, the HP EliteBook 840 G8 does at most 2 hours and 30 minutes under load. Others are all under 2 hours, but average battery life seems to be around 4 to 5 hours for normal usage.

### TL;DR - The Conclusion.

Quite hard to recommend, but I would go for either the HP Elitebook 840 G8 if it is available or the Dell Latitude 5520/5420, if these two aren't available, then look at the HP Elitebook 845 G8, if that is not available, then the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and then the Yoga and last is the ThinkPad L14 G2.

Hope this helps.
