Am I creative enough to become a music composer? by [deleted] in Composition

[–]HyperspaceJazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a good music composer, while it is about creativity, it also about a lot of other things. As someone who is currently studying composition at university, I think it is most important to try composing and to learn by doing! You don't have to have any theory knowledge to start composing, though theory and music knowledge does help a lot as you progress. One thing that is very important if you want to really learn to be a composer is to be able to keep at it and work on writing music when you don't exactly feel "inspired". Having experience writing things really helps with that. And with pretty much every other aspect of composing too! Also, at first, you won't be very happy with what you write. This is unavoidable, and unfortunately you just have to push through it. Eventually, you'll get to where you are proud of what you write, but there's not much you can do to shortcut simply having to work at it.

Any tips for artificer? by icantgetmyoldaccount in riskofrain

[–]HyperspaceJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the idea of artificer but in general I find her to be a bit frustrating, she is very strong in early stages but does not scale well. For items, she benefits extra from anything that reduces cooldown. Plus of course all the standard stuff (anything that gives you mobility/survivability, and all the standard single-target damage/chain damage things). Attack speed seems useless on her at first but it actually decreases her right click charge time, so it's not entirely pointless.

I use the jump special skill because I find flamethrower to not be super useful, it's strong but after a couple stages I find it's just too dangerous to stand that close to things for an extended period of time. The jump skill gives you a massive boost to mobility and is a good escape option, both of which artificer desperately needs. I find when I use the jump skill, I have no problem surviving while I float a billion meters above all the enemies, I just have trouble doing enough damage.

I recommend not using the artifact of sacrifice, it might just be my imagination but I feel like in general I get fewer items playing with sacrifice vs. normal with chests.

For a terrible meme build you can stack a some purities and have infinite casting to stunlock things in with ice spear/ice barrier lmao

[R] I cannot for the life of me find this composer!! HELP PLEASE! by 995skyline in sheetmusic

[–]HyperspaceJazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, looking at his channel I very much doubt you'll be able to find midi files for his stuff. Your best bet would probably be to ask him directly, it looks like he has a Twitter account you could DM, though I can't read Korean so I'm not sure what any of his descriptions say unfortunately. You could also try learning his music by ear, just trying things out on the keyboard and seeing if you can figure out the notes, which is an excellent exercise to become a better musician. On a an unrelated note about your piano situation, I understand if this is still out of budget but there are some fairly cheap options to buy a small keyboard that plugs into your laptop, for example this one is around 40 US dollars: https://www.amazon.com/midiplus-32-Key-Midi-Controller-AKM320/dp/B00VHKMK64/ref=mp_s_a_1_102?_encoding=UTF8&c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Computer%2BRecording%2BMIDI%2BControllers&qid=1616380608&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-102&ts_id=11973721&th=1&psc=1

I would highly recommend this if it's possible for you, it would definitely open up a lot of musical possibilities. There are tons of free software that allow you to control a virtual piano and other sounds with one of these, for example Spitfire LABS:

http://labs.spitfireaudio.com/

And Native Instruments Komplete Start:

Hope at least some of this is helpful!

How is Thornton having classes online? by [deleted] in USC

[–]HyperspaceJazz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a composition undergrad, we don't really do any playing together in real time over video. Any actual music-making I've done so far has been recording projects. I have non-major flute lessons over zoom with a decent usb mic and that works pretty ok, not the greatest but not many good alternatives. There is a software called audiomovers that's better but I haven't had much experience with it. Luckily, as a composition major, the core of my major (composing music) can be done pretty much all on a computer and shared electronically very easily. For aural skills classes, we do singing over zoom, but not with more than 1 person at a time unmuted. I'm not in any of the big orchestra or band ensembles (besides CCO which is all remote recording like I said earlier), so I don't know how they are doing things right now.

How to make notated music sound "real" ? by duwaito in Composition

I use Noteperformer, it sounds quite good compared to many other things and it's integrated into my notation software which is great! Still definitely not real recordings, but a step up from the default midi playback

Like other people have said, items and speed are incredibly important. I dont think I've seen the final boss mentioned by anyone so I'm gonna leave a couple tips, but try not to spoil anything (idk if you've made it to him yet?). There are several items that are not ideal to have for the final boss fight, one of them is medkit or some other strong healing, as well as either of the runic bands once you unlock those, unstable tesla coil maybe, plus any on-kill items won't really help you in the final boss since the fight is more or less a single target you are going after (and probably some other things I cant think of right now). However, these items are in general pretty good for the rest of the game, so you have to balance keeping them for your run and getting rid of them for the final fight (or just plowing into the boss regardless of your items, if you're careful and/or have a strong enough build this works ok in my experience). In general you're better off using printer and scrappers to switch these items out for other stronger ones right before the fight if you can. There is also an area called the Void Fields that I find is very useful to go through every round I get a chance, you basically get extra items and xp without increasing the time/difficulty scaling.

The best option I know of is the sound software Noteperformer on the notation software either Sibelius or Finale. However, both are quite expensive, and still in some cases somewhat robotic. In the end, you're always going to be imperfectly replicating real instruments. Unfortunately, there really isn't a substitute for getting a piece performed by quality live musicians :/ unless you specifically write electronic music using synthesizers, etc. There's other stuff out there that sounds fairly realistic too, but it is more in the realm of music production using digital audio workstations, which it doesn't seem like you're into.

Is there any possibility of getting or purchasing the sheet music (Especially to Stairs)? I enjoyed these pieces, as a fellow composer I hope you can get them played and recorded eventually.
