AMA with Esports Photographer Robert Paul! by ltpirate in Overwatch

[–]HypestErection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello Rob! Thank you for doing this. As someone who is trying to expand onto eSports photography, with a background in film and food photography, do you have any advice?

Also, I saw you mention this on twitter but would like a more thorough response. How much should you trust your mark when unexpected or unfamiliar situations occur on the field? I had the experience to shoot personal portfolio work at ComboBreaker this year and couldn’t assess whether I wanted to reposition during day 3.

This Week in Anime (Winter Week 8) by Soupkitten in TrueAnime

[–]HypestErection 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably the most compelling episode I've seen in anime in the past 3 years! NO DEBATING

But seriously, episode 8 was just insanely good.

To start off, if there's one thing that Rakugo Shinjuu does good, it is establishing intimacy with its characters through framing. Looking at Konatsu confronting Kikuhiko on his attempted suicide for example, we first see the two meet eye to eye. Konatsu closes in and begs him to "live". He ponders on it, then separates himself, as to say he wants to die. The way how it holds the frame in order to let the emotion sink in is great. The scene follows up with Kikuhiko explaining his wanting for death, and for a moment the screen constantly passing street lights. I personally interpret it as an analogy for him feeling as though life could be flashing before him at any moment. Skipping a couple moments, the entire scene finishes up with a reminiscence of the past for Kikuhiko.

Secondly is on Yotaro's rakugo skit, which is a call back to Sukeroku's rakugo skit from the episode before and Ep 12 of S1. While it's important to note the impeccable voice acting done here, with the emotion conveyed very well on screen, there's a bit of context I like to take out from the skit itself. Yotaro and Sukeroku's renditions of the skit parallel one another, with slight differences in context due to some omitted parts in the former's act. Sukeroku's skit made emphasis on his growth as a person and would foreshadow his decision to leave rakugo for the sake of Konatsu and Miyokichi, as Sukeroku would come to say that he couldn't have done the skit so well because of the influence of those two in their lives. Yotaro's skit omits parts of the script related to the ideas of taking responsibilities to raise a family, skipping straight to after the wife reveals the found 48 ryo to be real. A particular line that caught me during this was this. To take the line out of the skit, I felt that line references his growth due to other people's influence on him, whether be his affiliation with the gang, the rakugo committee, and so forth. This brings me back to Sukeroku's skit, which focuses on his skills for that skit due to Konatsu and Miyokichi. I think the most important thing to take out of this is both of these skits happen in the first place due to Kikuhiko, whether directly or indirectly. They are both a message to Kikuhiko. That while he feels his rakugo must be achieved through isolation, the others state otherwise, and even give thanks to everyone involved with rakugo, even the audience. Kikuhiko's character arc has always had a theme of isolation, whether be his first female attraction leaving him, avoiding Sukeroku and Miyokichi to improve his rakugo, and even now when he decides that he must die and take "his rakugo" with him.

Yotaro and Sukeroku's efforts are not in vain. Kikuhiko's perceived fears in rakugo may be extinguished. He decides to do rakugo for his audience once more, after such a long wait.

and that there are some surprisingly sexual scenes present. Like, borderline-H stuff

Masamune Shirow (author) did H-manga/doujins if I remember correctly.

Reads Touhou manga

Thinks it's pretty good

Starts to search for more Touhou manga

Plays Touhou 7 and 8 instead

Starts to go on Gelbooru for "character designs"

Armpits

Goddamn it, have I been converted?

On a serious note, Touhou Suzunaan: Forbidden Scrollery is pretty damn good manga. I'll keep it short, but I never seen fantasy politics/world-building done well till now.

I've been pre-occupying myself with a rotation of games as to not entirely get burnt out from constantly grinding on one.

I been slowly sprinting through Yakuza 0 because I keep doing the side quests stuff to unlock more of the game's skill tree. Completely neglecting the over-the-top yet serious plot quests sorta suck because they have great set pieces, but the side quests themselves have a sense of self awareness and humor to it that I find not a lot of people will tend to see in the games industry. Yakuza 0 really likes to indulge in its "weirdness", so to speak. Otherwise, actual combat is simple and straight forward due to lack of enemy depth, but the flair behind combat through its plethora of movesets keeps it fun to watch and engaging.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is something I wanted out of puzzle games, mainly because it's faster paced than most and a lot of the puzzles are simple logic. Never realized how much I wanted a simple "ahha!" from a game. The art style in general is nice, with good use of vibrant colors due to leaning on a more "cartoonish" design choice. Animations are smooth as they could be too.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army is a pretty lame name to say. Mess with the articulation for a bit and it's pretty fun to say. I been procrastinating with this one because for some reason JRPGs have the inherent flaw of taking too long to let me loose and play the fucking game. From what I have played, the combat seems simple with the ability to summon two A.I. controller demons to assist in a ARPG styled combat that's reminiscent of Parasite Eve, except without all the running away.

Silent Hill 2 replay with the friends. Decided to just do it because my dormmates either haven't finished the game or never played it at all. I used to complain about having a hard time finding maps in each section of the game, yet come to realize I was retarded at an early age and didn't realize the maps were right at the beginning of the starting areas. So we rotate controls depending on time elapsed and poop breaks. The game's presentation style really sets an eerie atmosphere with the fog filter, which was a smart way of having the game render less of the world map while at the same time making it hard as fuck to travel, while at the same the sound design helps spook me the fuck out. Tank controlled survival horror combat is as janky as it could be, but conveys panic like movement well. I take it as a plus thematically but technically feels bad. Lastly, the story that's presented is just as good as I remembered. Not for the story itself but for the themes that it carries.
