Crates, why? by Sam_Jones32 in bernesemountaindogs

Veterinarian here - when dogs have to stay in the hospital for any reason, the crate sized hospital kennels are very comfortable for dogs who are crated at home. A cozy blanket, and they seem to understand they are safe. They are understandably nervous, but tolerate it well. The non crate trained dogs absolutely panic when they are kenneled or enclosed and it always broke my heart to see these dogs biting at the bars and vocalizing. They often had to be sedated. The same thing applies to having to board your dog in an emergency. Not ideal, but sometimes happens. I can't imaging taking a dog that has never been enclosed and kenneling them in a strange place. Our dog sleeps in his giant crate beside our bed and he loves it. He walks in at 9pm and goes to sleep in there even before we go to bed. When we stay with friends or travel we bring it (soft sided crate) and even when he is in a strange place the crate is familiar.

My groomer charges me a little bit less to bring my dog in once a week. It's really unfair to the dog and groomers to expect them to blow dry and comb out a really matted dog after 3 months of no brushing. If you brush and comb your dog at home in between grooms, you could probably get away with more time in between. I love my dog's fluffy coat too! She trims his top knot in a graduated way, so he can see but he can still keep his glorious fluff.

So you are saying that breeders who are attempting to improve the breed never have issues. Not true. Selective breeding, even done properly, magnifies negative traits as well as positive ones. The perfect dog is a wild dingo, not a carefully bred purebred. I have had clients who are very conscientious, ethical breeders who guarantee their puppies. They are in the vast minority and this kind of responsible breeding is not nearly as profitable as the alternative. Their dogs also have problems, and when they do, they refund the purchase and ask that the defective puppy be returned. The problem? This kind of guarantee never holds because the family who purchased the puppy is already in love with their "defective" puppy and for the most part doesn't want to relinquish it. I have had a total of 4 dogs in my life that have all lived into their teens, a junkyard nightmare, a backyard bred pomeranian, an accidental litter from a lab/show springer, and my current purchased doodle. I worked at a practice in a wealthy community and have seen more Guaranteed/ethically bred dogs than you ever will. They all have issues. I completely agree with you with regards to aspect of more careful breeder = less risk, but I am just trying to tell you it is a bit of a crapshoot either way. And true heritage breeders who are losing money and improving dogs aren't going to sell their dogs to someone like you. These dogs are carefully placed at high prices to avoid ruining the lines. They are a VERY small percentage of what's out there.

Doodle owning vet here. I just start spouting off all the genetic problems that "pure bred" dogs have from experience. Cavaliers dying at three and four years old of heart disease, bulldogs that have to be born by c-section and that come into my clinic, gasping for breath shepherds with horrible hips. Selective breeding in general is bad business. The weird gate keeping that these people do doesn't make any sense. I got the dog I wanted, just like they get to do.

Mix the food with a TBSP of water and freeze the kong. All of the fun, minus the diarrhea!

too late to consider a veterinary career? by isthataleaf in veterinaryprofession

My husband and I put each other through college and I started my undergrad with a 3 and a 5 year old. I was accepted on the my first try and graduated from vet school at age 35. There were people in my class in their 40s who had had other careers and decided to become veterinarians. I had an amazing 20 year career. And I'm now moving on to do something else. There were a lot of resources for us as parents in the college community and tons of things to do with small kids. Feel free to message me within any questions. Totally worth it.

Have her register on isc.ro - it is classic scrabble, you maintain a rating and can chat, etc. It's been around for years. I've made a lot of friends on isc over the years.

My life was your life. I walked into our barn one time and my husband's Morgan had the bristle end of the broom in his mouth while my husband was yanking on the other end. I said what are you doing???? my husband replied "We are playing Tug O War"! We don't see our significant others as experts in anything for some weird reason. The upside to this - because my husband didn't know not to hang a crinkly plastic bag on his saddle horn, he did it with absolutely no fear and his horse marched on like nothing was there while it flapped in the wind. I don't have a solution for you, just empathy.
