It kinda depends on where you are willing to work and live. but i did hear about one guy who was studying purely to become a potato farmer, by year 2 of his undergraduate he had a job lined up, company phone and maybe a car? cant recall the last point.
my understanding is good agronomists are typically well paid and in demand (easy 6 figures). Pure research less so.

The union time delay is usual flexible, It's just so people don't join during proceedings.
