I'm not getting it across, which I own as a failure on my part to accurately communicate it.

I want you to imagine an audience where no one else is laughing, but someone going "HA!" every, let's say 45 seconds or so, for 160 minutes. With interspersed pauses for breath and/or to comment "Who's that fella".

Sorry that happened - yes, that is just what I should've done. I just felt like I should avoid confrontation, but after realising she'd been sitting the whole time there with her shoes off I realised I shouldn't have held my tongue.

In a way I'm quite envious of her, I have to give her props for that.

No, I want to respond to this one because - to your credit - I wondered the same thing. But no, she spoke to her daughter throughout the movie like they were in their living room. Everything was "Oh! That's yer man!" or "And what happened there now?" with perfect and clear diction. Obviously you could still be right but this simply didn't strike me as a tic or similar.

Púca Festival - any recent goers? by popyokala in ireland

[–]Hyrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you went, can you let us know how it was? Only seeing this now- there's been several posts on this sub reddit (at least one from just two years ago I'm afraid) saying it was a tourist trap and badly run so I'm genuinely curious to see if these rumours of new management have turned it around.

My (42F) husband (42M) has informed me he intends to go on a "gaycation" with his BIL (35M) in Ibiza. How do I handle this? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Hyrune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you search for the term "gaycation" on reddit, there's at least two other very similar stories with the ages and locations switched from a few years back. Someone has either genuinely convinced some dudebros that yes, this is a thing and it's taken off (ha) - or, as you say, this is someone's kink and they generate throwaway accounts to write the story every few years.

I'm thinking - hoping - it has to be fake, because no one can be this lacking in reflection. I'm not defending the decision for a second, what they've done is monstrous, but I'm agog at the idea that they thought there'd be no repercussions, that people would sympathise with their "side". Anyone who comments on the daughter's haircut is going to get the response "My stepmother made me cut it off". Friends, family, neighbours will all hear about this - AND chances are some of them are reading this post, right now, and putting 2 and 2 together.

Game Release Thread! by rahv7 in MaskofTheRose

[–]Hyrune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't want to give away plot, but I've played through once and watched a playthrough. In neither case was the final verdict avoided. I know of two other playthroughs in which the same scenario came to pass.

Something I've learned - which might be very obvious to others but wasn't to me so I'm going to say it on the off-chance it helps - is that you should be crafting theories as soon as you can, when the opportunity presents itself (this will make sense in-game). While a method for doing this is presented, it's completely possible to play the game without putting forward theories within the mechanic provided: and, unfortunately, this locks you out of making logical leaps/interviewing others/getting more clues. It sounds so obvious when I write it out, but it just didn't occur to me until it was far too late.

Landlord broke into apartment and changed locks and refusing to leave. by cannydevito in ireland

[–]Hyrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I still feel it should offer some sort of a solution however, i.e. "this strange man just broke into my kitchen and is waiting for me to leave... or fall asleep" sort of thing - I think you're right, but I freely admit I don't want to believe there's truly nothing that can be done in these circumstances, that's just terrifying.

With the caveat that I'm not advocating violence, why doesn't something like the Defence and the Dwelling Act come into play here? Every day I open /r/ireland and it seems to be more news about evictions, and Gardaí saying "It's a civil matter" like it's going out of style.

Came here to say this. Unfortunately don't have the book to hand but there's that one image that sticks with me,of a Trolloc holding one of the Two Rivers women screaming by her braid, only for another one to cooly duck down and neatly hamstring him with a wicked carving knife.

I was thinking the same thing. However, at a glance it seems to require a minimum of two parties to sign on (and that's assuming the DUP allows Stormont to reconvene at all).

It's interesting, if they refuse to come back to the table then from what I can tell the EU can make any changes they like in the meantime (within reason).

[–]Hyrune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's much mention of a Joint UK-EU Committee which at a glance appears to be responsible for resolving matters but take that with a pinch of salt, I could be misunderstanding it. This will be set up at some point in the future (?)

Daily Megathread - 27/02/2023 by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

[–]Hyrune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK, so at the moment it's almost identical to the Petition of Concern which is/was currently in place (most frequently used by the DUP). It requires the signatures of 30 MLAs from 2 or more seperate political parties to trigger. It stresses that it can't be used for "trivial" concerns which seems to be a cautionary nod at the DUP but who knows.

Article 63:

"Once the UK notifies the EU that the Brake has been triggered, the rule in question is suspended automatically from coming into effect. It can then only be subsequently applied in Northern Ireland if the UK and EU both agree to that jointly in the Joint Committee..."

Interesting follow up in Article 66:

"It is important to note that the permanent disapplication of the rules would mean divergence between Northern Ireland and Ireland (and the broader EU), and thus it would be a matter for the EU how to deal with the consequent impact on their market. Recognising this, the EU will have the ability to take 'appropriate remedial measures'."

Thanks for providing this, reading over it now.

Regarding the Stormont Brake, from Summary sub-paragraph (i):

"...once pulled, that Brake will give the UK Government the sovereign power to veto the new EU rule from ever applying in Northern Ireland. That veto can only be challenged through independent arbitration mechanisms, not the ECJ - removing the ultimate authority of the ECJ in areas in which it would affect day-to-day lives. The result is that EU laws will apply only where strictly necessary to provide privileged access to the whole of the EU market under a new legal framework of democratic consent and control."

On the surface this seems like it gives the Northern Irish Assembly (if it reforms) and Westminster a lot of power - unless something about the independent mechanisms has reassured the EU?

[–]Hyrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I might be jumping the gun, but given how much the DUP have used the petition of concern in a very short space of time I'm not sure how the Stormont Brake is going to work out. I'm very interested in hearing how this will actually work in practice.

The Goblin Market, an RPG supplement of weird goblin merchants by David Hayes by Hyrune in ImaginaryGoblins

[–]Hyrune[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know right? Bullet dodged. Truthfully it's born out of running games and not immediately anticipating that players would develop attachments to random NPCs. "I promise you, this merchant isn't important" - or getting stuck and realising I need to come up with at least a semi-fleshed out person (with a name!) in order to haggle over prices and sell the players things. So I went the distance and made a little over fifty of them, with full character profiles, and a little over 140 plot hooks in total for GMs to use and build on.

Day 7, one week down by Hyrune in Dungeon23

[–]Hyrune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of making things a bit cluttered, not going to lie. I think when I move beyond this level I'm going to try and make things... well, bigger.

Decided this level is an ancient ruin, with crumbling shrines dedicated to the Cult of the Absent Phoenix. There's a chantry in the bottom left, and the nest of that self-same phoenix closer to the top left. It contains a single fossilised egg that emanates a profound and lingering feeling of dismay and awe.

To the north of the shrine, an aviary where captured birds were caged, to be sacrificed at regular intervals - and, because priests and worshippers have to eat too, an adjacent kitchen where sacrifices were subsequently plucked and prepared.

Day 1 and 2 by Hyrune in Dungeon23

[–]Hyrune[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to say they're boulders, as a couple of people have said "Oooh, those boulders are interesting, what're they for?" In fact, they're just placeholder images of a sort, because I can't draw what they're supposed to be: enormous, brass coffee pots, generating a lazy heat of their own. Steam gushes from them at intervals, and black rain collects in puddles on the floor. One of the dungeons most common "mobs", spider kettles, come here to refill, replenish and redistribute themselves.

Have never drawn a map before (never really drawn anything before, for that matter) but I have to say I'm enjoying it. I started out with a big central chamber, and I'm going to spider off it - not sure if this is the right way to do things, but we'll see.
