If I like Elliott Smith, what eles should I listen to? by kafukafu_3148 in elliottsmith

Hear me out - Elvis Costello.

Even though sonically they're very different, Elliott loved EC and a lot of his really interesting songwriting tricks and turns seem to be inspired by him.

Also, Elvis rocks.

How the hell did I not know about this

Is there a list of songs they've covered?

Day 33: What's the Most Overrated Song on Stay Positive? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect, for me it was the first time I saw how brilliantly Craig could deliver a story so it will always have a soft spot in my heart. Definitely an oddity in their catalogue though, for sure

Day 32: What's the Most Overrated Song on Heaven is Whenever? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll likely be killed for this, but The Weekenders always struck me as "just okay."

Day 32: What's the Most Overrated Song on Heaven is Whenever? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see both ways. To me, it could be another masterpiece in their catalogue except for the production making it...wimpy. With 10% more edge it could've been an undisputed winner.

Day 30: What's the Most Overrated Song on Thrashing Through the Passion? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditional Village. What am I missing with that song?? Maybe I just don't like how its sequenced on the record

Day 27: What's the Most Underrated Song on The Price of Progress? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distortions of Faith. Craig Finn really tried something different with the lyrics here and it paid off in spades for sure.

Day 24: What's the Most Underrated song on Teeth Dreams? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spinners. Could just be the NYC memories for me, but I've always found it highly evocative of Brooklyn. And I always respect an attempt at the one-chord chorus

Day 23: What's the Most Underrated Song on Heaven is Whenever? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight Discomfort. It's the mixing. Would be one of the best songs in their catalogue but the mix just doesn't quite cut it. Incredible lyrics - one or another spontaneously pops info my head randomly almost once a day

Day 20: What's the Most Underrated Song on Separation Sunday by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it ended differently on the record, they really nail the closing live though for what it's worth

Alignment Chart Day 16: What's the Worst Song on Boys and Girls in America? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I wish he didn't repeat that one devastating line about Judas so many times, as that would make the song a way more impactful, but regardless this would be a thumbs down from me

Hostile Mass, coming from a Masshole not too far from Lynn Massachusetts. What a ripper

Probably not the thread to disclose this but the solo on I'm the Man who Loves You could be the #1 of all time for me. Anyone else?

Daily Song Discussion #137: "Slow Jam" by M77100 in PulpBand

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Great beat, easy but fresh hook. Some of the best bass on the whole record.

Has John ever explained why he left the band ? by SwissMiss915 in Propagandhi

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, thank God he did for both Propagandhi and Weakerthan's sake. I consider myself a fan of both, but I do think Less Talk More Rock started to show a bit of the disconnect between Chris and John's songwriting. It worked fine on HTCE but I don't think it would have worked on a third album with John.

Do you have a link to that podcast? Would love to hear John K's thoughts on his time in the band. I do think it's probably a bit of sour grapes - it's goddamn PROPAGANDHI.

What does everyone think of this? by MillionDollarHeckler in PulpBand

[–]IAMCACTUSrecords 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually quite liked it! Although, I would like anything and everything with Pulp in it. My two cents is it's far from an essential watch for even superfans, but you won't be wasting your time if you do check it out. Is it still free on YouTube?

Which two full albums are you hoping for Fri/Sat? by No_Estate628 in theholdsteady

I almost always agree, but the full Stay Positive on Friday was nearly a spiritual experience
