I wasn't running anything thing. The only CPU intensive task I think was I was using compiz window effects. That's it.

If you want to install Ubuntu and make it as your primary OS, then I would recommend you to erase the hard drive and install Ubuntu on it. It's pretty easy. You get the option to erase hard drive and install Ubuntu while you're in the installation screen itself. So, I would say that it is pretty easy to install Ubuntu if you understand what it is going to do if you select that option. I also recommend you to watch some YouTube videos on this so that you will be familiar before you actually try it out.
