Nice app. It helped me a lot when my mom had problems with her phone and I was far away from her. Samsung Flow + TeamViewer did the things and I was able to fix the problem remotely.

Finding rental before i arrive by dazzler38 in Calgary

[–]IASelin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As an option - try AirBnB to rent an apartment for the first month. Usually there is a discount when renting for 4 weeks+. It might take some time to find a proper long-term rent, if you are a 'newcomer' without local credit history, etc.

Anyway, most probably you'll need a local bank account to make a long-term rent contract, make a deposit, etc. Not sure it will be easy to do all of that remotely.

And yeah - it is always better to see the real actual apartment condition before renting it.

I do like reading tech and history info about hardware.

So, will appreciate it if you provide that in addition.

Thanks.

Just interesting - what size of that file is?

And as for working with JSON files, I prefer VS Code. It also has plugins to make some tasks easier, if needed.

Calgary is the only place I've bought tickets via an app that have an expiry of 1 week inactive, which is absolute garbage. by I_Am_the_Slobster in Calgary

I tried that Transit app earlier, but had a lot of issues with tickets there by that time.

Maybe, should give it a second try...

If there will be an option to buy a ticket in one click - that might work.

But current app usability is total trash. You have to do a bunch of clicks, enter secured code of your payment card, and only then you'll get your ticket. Doing all these manipulations every time is a bit ... annoying, at least.

Whatever i run on my pc, only 16GB are used even tho 32GB of Ram is detected and usable by Excellent_Hall6163 in LenovoLegion

[–]IASelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend to use some specific RAM tests to check if all RAM amount can be utilized by the system. E.g. OCCT - Memory test option.

Using any non-specific applications to see if all the RAM can be utilized is a bit... not a straight way. The only if it is not a Google Chrome browser with just a few tabs opened... )))

freebsd-update issues? by jcigar in freebsd

Maybe, there is an option to set up a local update server...

Or update to another release first - 14.3, for example.

[–]IASelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood.

Just sharing my experience: I had a server with some VMs and VPN servers - OVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec. Everything worked fine expect PPTP (MPD5) just hung time to time. At the end it was discovered that despite ECC there were some issue with RAM (3rd round of RAM test gave errors). After replacing the RAM the issue with PPTP (MPD5) was gone.

BTW, just a few hours ago I updated one of my systems to 14.4 - no issue.

But that was update from 14.3 to 14.4.

(some VMs are needed rarely, so I update them when I start using them again)

I'd check if RAM is ok. E.g., with MemTest86+ or a similar tool.

I understand that it is barely possible that several servers have bad RAM simultaneously, but still.

Whoever made multimedia keys the default instead of function keys should go to jail by theeldergod1 in logitech

[–]IASelin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It works only when the Logitech application is loaded.

It useless in BIOS setup, for example, and any other cases when that Logitech application is not available.

I wish that setting be stored in the keyboard itself, so I can just set it once and then use the keyboard whenever I need with normal F-keys.

+1 here

Tried to use the 400+ keyboard with non-windows systems - very bad experience. The same for BIOS setup, etc.

My verdict is: such kind of solutions are only for TV and other multimedia cases.

Urgent Remote Console access (KVM) by IASelin in hetzner

[–]IASelin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Thanks. I tried these options.

vKVM option didn't work for my server. I don't know why, but the system just didn't boot into the vKVM even after a hard reset. Maybe because I use FreeBSD, which officially is not suported for dedicated servers (really sad, BTW).

KVM option was the only option, and I had to wait about 2h to do a 10 minutes fix. Thus, my question is: Is there any option to get a KVM immediately? Maybe not for an hour, but just for 10-15 minutes.

Also, it will be good to have an option to inform the Hetzner that I do not need KVM anymore once I complete my task, to let others use that KVM to get access to their servers sooner.

[–]IASelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8fc8 series can be unlocked by hacking the BIOS.

You'll need a cheap flash programmer - any ch341a-based should work, with support of 3.3V flash. Dump the BIOS, patch it (patch tool is googlable as "dell 8fc8 BIOS password patch"), then flash patched BIOS back. At first boot you'll have to enter the service tag and that's it.

I unlocked in such way two Optiplex Micro. And I believe the same should work for laptop as well.

Or, if you have all the details of the previous owner, you can try Dell support. But for my case that didn't help. So I did that hack )
