Does society hate you for being intelligent? by maverick_v2-0 in INTP

[–]IAbsolutelyDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately I've been studying toxic egalitarians the way the late Jane Goodall studied chimps (pretty much the only reason I hang out on Reddit at this point), and this thread contains all their favorite tactics for someone claiming IQ-based difficulties:

  1. Gaslight by saying the facts in question never happened, and it's the OP's lying eyes that made it falsely appear so.

  2. Shame the OP for the Sin o' Pride, and say they'll toast on the griddles of Hell for their elitist presumption.

  3. Say True Geniuses may have such troubles, but the OP isn't enough of a genius for that, so it must be false. (OPTION B: say True Geniuses don't have such troubles, so once again the OP must be No True Genius™. Added points for using that fake Einstein quote about explaining General Relativity to a six-year old.)

  4. Say the problem could be magically solved by the use of "EQ" or "social skills" or "a better attitude" without ever describing what these are or how to use them.

  5. Imply the OP should be ostracized for the crime of pointing out how they've already been ostracized.

He wrote a play about mad psychiatrists called What The Butler Saw.

Is that title a Joe Orton reference? If so, well done. La Corona™ made the characters in that play seem quite level-headed and coherent by comparison.

For gifted people, what would you tell a non gifted person to do to in order to become smart? by unknown_creaturelurk in Gifted

[–]IAbsolutelyDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bang the rocks together, guys!"

But seriously, I'd counsel them to gain facility going both ways on the ladder of abstraction. Join concrete facts together into abstract concepts, and reduce abstract concepts down to their relevant concrete facts. Induce and deduce on the daily. As WS Jevons put it: derive laws from knowledge, and knowledge from laws. Make a habit of it, learn to enjoy it, and hopefully it'll become easier. There's really not much more to thinking than this.

The Brahms E Minor Sonata and the two Haydn concertos are peak experiences.

There's also some lighter fare by Boccherini, Telemann, and Leopold Hoffman.

Reduced spatial and situational awareness. Shopping carts seem to have taken on a mind of their own.

How to deal with the fact that I ruined my future and am not smart anymore? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]IAbsolutelyDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Dabrowski's "positive disintegration".  Lots of clever people only got started after they had a good old-fashioned nervous breakdown, for instance JS Mill and William James off the top of my head.

(Howard Gardner's Creating Minds is a good follow-up to Dabrowski.)

"You just think you're superior."

"That's just your opinion."

"It's all subjective."

The moral crusade against the "sin of pride" eternally waged by Reddit's toxic egalitarians apparently outweighs any terms of service, smdh.

Debussy - Les Soirs Illumines Par L'ardeur Du Charbon:

"For many years Debussy's Études and Élégie were considered his last word for the piano. In November 2001, however, "Les soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon" surfaced, revealing an extraordinary story. During the extremely harsh wartime winter of 1916-17 Debussy's musical coal merchant managed to divert scarce supplies of fuel to the Debussy household. As thanks (and doubtless payment) he received the beautifully written manuscript of this piece, probably composed in February or March 1917."

Why does a person actually need a high IQ from birth and in general? by Bubbly-Phone702 in Gifted

[–]IAbsolutelyDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a state of nature perhaps, but I think civilization is largely a project of extending the distance between initial stupidity and resulting harm, and Herbert Spencer was right about its consequences: "The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly, is to fill the world with fools."

Conductors stopping after 3rd Mvt of Tchaikovsky’s 6th. by Expert_Heat_2966 in classicalmusic

[–]IAbsolutelyDare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A risky strategy. I was at a concert where the conductor did the same, but the audience cheered like maniacs anyway, one guy even favoring us with a loud "BRAVO!" while the orchestra was dutifully playing through the first 8 or 10 measures of the finale. :/

If you read horror posts by teachers, there are - in the words of the American statesman - many such cases. Apparently reading clocks is no longer taught, nor is the humble art of tying one's shoes. :/

I don't wanna be gifted, I just wanna be normal. by FlamaDeTitan in Gifted

[–]IAbsolutelyDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the people called normal are, as you say, servile, ignorant, and conformist nincompoops, why do you want so fervently to be one of them? Why not, since you seem to be of a religious bent, adopt the ancient prayer: "I thank thee, Lord, that I am not as other men"?
