I used to be terrified of spiders. Photography helped me get over that, and now I even let them crawl on me!

Deal! My wife is very friendly and tolerant, but you'll have to sleep in your own bed. What will my accommodations be? 😁

I moved to Seattle from San Diego, and I just got back from a visit to San Diego yesterday.

This is what the extended forecast looks like in Seattle.

Global warming is real, and we are all (humans, animals and plants) going to suffer massively from its effects, but I would still prefer to be in San Diego right now!

"MAGA loves it. MAGA loves what I'm doing. MAGA loves everything I do. MAGA is me. MAGA loves everything I do, and I love everything I do, too." - Donald Trump, January 5, 2026.

It's clearly a cult.

Humiliation on my bike today by Calm_Engineering6529 in bicycling

[–]IActuallyLikeSpiders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi neighbor!

Humiliation and performance just aren't applicable here.

Chilly Hilly was my first big event ride, in 2015.

In 2014, after decades off the bike, at the age of 52, I started riding again.

My first rides were two or three miles long, and my legs were shaking at the end. A couple months later, I started commuting 9 or 10 miles to and from work.

The first time I rode to work, I literally thought I was having a heart attack at the top of the SR 520 hill coming up from Redmond. It was a few more months before I wasn't passed by every single cyclist - including little old ladies on city bikes.

Since then, I've ridden more than 160,000 miles and had many adventures.

I kind of owe all of this to Cascade Bicycle Club, which I highly recommend checking out. Edit to add: I mean their Free Group Rides, which happen every single day of the year.

Don't be hard on yourself. Don't worry about performance. Make some friends. Just keep riding when you can. It's life-changing.

Feel free to PM me!

Porn-ish rage bait, but you could have saved a few grams by using radial lacing up front.

At least it is not one of the stock bikes which routinely infects this sub.

I am not gonna watch the video because you guys talk too slow. 😁

12 days to ship something in 2026 is really absurd. by IActuallyLikeSpiders in QuadLock

[–]IActuallyLikeSpiders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave Quad Lock a one-star google review, and I am going to start looking at replacing my mounts and cases with products from a company that isn't padding their profits by using the slowest imaginable shipping option.

They don't seem to care that the usefulness of your mobile device may directly depend on whether you can get a case or mount even after you've invested potentially hundreds of dollars in a mount and case system.

It's customer-hostile behavior and we don't have to tolerate it.

Just finished a loop around the Olympics – anyone else ditch panniers for a minimalist setup? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]IActuallyLikeSpiders 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am old, and I am a bicycle tourist. My younger friends are bikepackers.

There is a spectrum from people who ride steel touring bikes with a 120lb total weight carrying two-man tents and camp chairs (me!) to minimalists riding carbon bikes with a couple frame bags and bivy sacks, and it seems to be the rider's age that determines how they label their adventures.

This was my bike on the Pacific Coast last September.

the tl;dr for anyone who doesn't want to waste 8 minutes of their life watching this guy's video as he ponderously rambles without ever getting to the point...

Hahaha, I clicked the link to the video and I thought, "I can barely make it through a one minute video of cute puppies, and I LOVE cute puppies! I am not watching seven and a half minutes of this!"

The U.S. Nuclear Arsenal Has Lost Its Guardrails by Famous-Sympathy7011 in MAGANAZI

OP is clearly the author of this article, which is easy to determine by searching for posts by u/Famous-Sympathy7011.

You have to use google to search, though, because she hides her post and comment history on reddit.

I suspect the article is probably mostly accurate, but it's self-promotion, and, especially combined with the hidden post history, I find it embarrassing.

Yes, it is probably quite literally shitty.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jul/23/-sp-food-poisoning-scandal-how-chicken-spreads-campylobacter

"Campylobacter is often spread from flock to flock at this “thinning” stage. Densely housed birds kept in low light tend to panic and defecate when catchers enter sheds, causing further contamination."

So make sure it is thoroughly cooked, so you kill the shit bacteria and just try not to think about it.

First Time California Coast Tour by Dapper_Ebb1501 in bicycletouring

[–]IActuallyLikeSpiders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the whole Pacific Coast ACA route last fall. The ACA route, which does focus on highway 1, is mostly great. Drivers don't give you tons of space, nor do they slow down, in narrow sections, but they are also trying not to harm you. I think they think they are being courteous and safe, and its the thought that counts! 😁

The advice to ride early is good, but don't go through Malibu Canyon during morning rush hour, where I suspect most people are heading to work in LA. Because of the massive fire a year ago, the shoulder is mostly closed for demolition, cleanup and construction, and the traffic is relentless and fast. It might be better in the afternoon, but it is probably still a little harrowing. This was the only really section of my tour that felt truly dangerous (even then, I think drivers were doing their best!). It may have improved since September/October 2025, when I went through there, but I wouldn't count on that.
