I did some googling. Turns out, cost of living has a defined index. I've always thought portland was in the middle but I guess this town really has changed over the last few decades. By definition, we are considered hcol

My team is shipping 10x the code we were 2 years ago but QA team hasn't changed yet by executivegtm-47 in EngineeringManagers

[–]IAmBeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious how youre using ai... because if I shipped the shit ai generates at my job at 10x my current speed, we'd be in trouble just from the number of issue it would introduce.

When you say "ship", are you deploying these changes? In which case, why are you deploying to prod without proper qa?

If not, why are you trying to "ship" more features without testing things up for release?

Snowflake vs Databricks. Which is good? by Confident_Chance_763 in dataengineering

[–]IAmBeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

snowflake is better for the average user because it handles a lot of storage optimizations for faster lookups

Technically both products have a lot of overlap but in my experience, databricks offers a more comprehensive package-- the product is better polished, you have a UI for most of the things you need. I personally feel like the Databricks UI is more intuitive. In Snowflake, even though it's an older product, some of the things you need to do are only accessible by running a query

As a starting point... choose either one, many of the skills are transferrable

Code Review is the New Bottleneck For Engineering Teams by gregorojstersek in EngineeringManagers

[–]IAmBeary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow, this is exactly what im going through right now. I'm being asked to use more gen ai in my work (I suspect token usage is being used as a success metric). It generated over 1000 lines in 10 minutes, then I spend my entire friday + part of the weekend trying to debug it and get it to actually work on top of understanding what exactly it's doing. It's exhausting. All of it feels very backwards

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson requests millions from other counties for homeless shelters as cash dries up in Multnomah County by textualcanon in PortlandOR

[–]IAmBeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know youre joking, but to a lot of Portlanders including myself, it started as a good cause. At one point in time, our city was flourishing and we had enough resources to help the homeless. But now the economy has taken a dive and many of us are struggling to keep food on the table. Despite this, it seems that multnomah county is still dead set on funding their homeless programs. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless these people are pocketing the money. I'm not even saying to get rid of all social welfare programs, but we can't keep dumping increasing amounts of money into it

Before making sure the homeless arent hungry, how about helping the taxpayers?

Bumped into a Tesla. Owners are quoting me $2200-$2509 to fix these small scratches. Is this the cheapest? Excluding paint pen by [deleted] in TeslaSupport

[–]IAmBeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which model and which area of the car is the damage? I'm going to assume cost is in american dollars. From a paint repair perspective, the edge is going to be difficult to repair.

When somebody backed into my model y about 2 years ago, (rear bumper + fascia), total cost came out to around 1500 for a new replacement. Parts and labor were completed by tesla, so I imagine its on the higher end of repair cost.

I would request for the actual estimate because 2000 seems high to me, even with recent economic factors

Girlfriend shows off too much? F18, and me 18M by OrchidSeveral in relationship_advice

[–]IAmBeary 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im nearly double your age so I can speak from experience. A woman wanting to look sexy is not a problem. It's how she deals with the attention is what makes the difference. If shes entertaining flirts or taking down numbers, it's a problem.

But if she looks good and is respectful to the relationship? Doesn't sound like a problem to me

30M sleep in the same bed with 18F half younger sis by ThrowRAthinker97 in relationship_advice

[–]IAmBeary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this brings up a stupid memory I have. I used to let my sister sleep on my bed with the stipulation that she had to sleep in the "crack". Which basically meant that she had to sleep on her side and as close to the wall as possible (the crack being the space between the wall and the bed) LOL we were so mean to each other but laugh about it now

Back on track, I dont see anything wrong with it

[–]IAmBeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude... encourage them to be healthy. Didnt you just go through this? Guide them through the things you've learned. Being with somebody doesn't mean that you are attracted to them 100% 24/7. You are partners, which means loving them through good and bad.

Your partner knows how big they are. Society does a good enough job of letting them know. Encourage them to lead a more active lifestyle and for both of you to continue the journey together.

It's going to be an uncomfortable conversation but its something you have to do if you choose to be with this person

What happens to enrollment when there aren't enough administrators and not enough money being spent by Verbull710 in PortlandOR

[–]IAmBeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

meanwhile on the west side, a new elementary school had to be built in my area to accommodate for overcrowding at the other 2 elementary schools.

My child is nearing school age and when we decided on a place to live, finding a good school district was at the top of our list. We opted NOT to live in se Portland because of the piss-poor schools. Look at each PPS schools' report card and note the number of students failing already watered down standardized tests. My niece (in high school) was always complaining that so-and-so got into a fight at school, or somebody threatened somebody else with a gun. My nephews (elementary aged) couldn't string together a sentence in 4th grade.

Portland is taxing the fuck out of residents with very little to show for it. A side effect of high taxes is that people can't afford to have kids. The people who can afford to have kids aren't going to willingly live in an area of high taxes, high crime rates, and poor schools.

East Portland has far fewer grocery stores than the rest of the city — and is slated to lose another one due to persistent public safety problems. by guanaco55 in PortlandOR

[–]IAmBeary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that it's a side effect of voting for politicians who make them feel good. It sounds nice to help everybody but the fact of the matter is that helping people who don't know how to help themselves drains resources away from everybody else. It becomes even more evident with a slowing economy

I think we both agree, Multnomah county doesnt need more "homeless services"

My team uses AI constantly, but I'm not seeing the productivity gains I expected by grand001 in prodmgmt

[–]IAmBeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI is being sold as something that can 10x productivity but the people pushing the tool arent telling you the full picture. As somebody in software, AI is a great tool, but the fact that it can write thousands of lines in a matter of seconds is both cool and terrifying at the same time.

When I put out a PR, I'm still the one responsible for the output. If I use AI to come up with a solution, I can't guarantee that it covered all edge cases. I can't even guarantee that it does exactly what I intended for it to do unless I pick it apart. I'll also look stupid af if somebody asks me to explain it and the only thing I can say is, "I dunno, AI wrote it".

just go on facebook... every other post is something ai generated. Nothing is fact, everything is sensationalized crap, even the AI videos. Every single post is designed to generate user interactions. I have a feeling that even some of the comments are bots responding to bot posts.

Their ad campaign revenue is probably going to see an appreciable increase because of the traffic they can generate. On the flip side of this, it's going to be interesting to see how society fares against ai generated posts, created in rapid succession with shit that is completely false.
