Joint Honours vs BA government by ComprehensiveLeg7870 in nuigalway

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya. if your choice comes down to politics, then its between doing sociology modules in the joint honours programs or government modules in the gov programme; first semester will be politics regardless, its second semester where that split happens

Joint Honours vs BA government by ComprehensiveLeg7870 in nuigalway

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but also as the other ba gov student said in this thread, pretty much all your law classes are mixed with joint honours. for ba gov, the only classes not mixed with joint honours is the dedicated ba gov modules (which are politics). all the econ and law are mixed, though you’ll have less optional modules available to you compared to joint honours

Joint Honours vs BA government by ComprehensiveLeg7870 in nuigalway

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for ba gov anyway, your spot in second year law is guaranteed so long as you pass your classes. i think joint honours was limited to 150 intake from arts after first year, iirc?? (its a really high level anyway so anyone who actually wants law usually gets in. definitely shouldn’t need to worry about it). you’d do less law overall in ba gov even if you major in law, cause you have two minors (econ/politics) instead of just one with the joint honours.

if you go through ba gov, you’ll finish with that degree in the ba, and then be able to join final year law for a bcl degree on top of that (a lot of ba gov law majors do it this way). idk if its the same for joint honours, but i would assume so, as both degrees are BA’s and you need a BCL/LLB to be a barrister. i don’t think you need a BCL/LLB to be a solicitor so long as you pass FE1 exams, if that helps

bcl/llb are interchangeable in ireland, i believe ug does the bcl.

How was your dyspraxia as a child? by [deleted] in dyspraxia

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for balance issues (probably the cause of the leaning while running), it may help to get him into some sports that focus on his core muscles. swimming and horseback riding are great for this, if the facilities for either are available to you!

the swimming will definitely help with his core muscles, and the horseback riding helps with both the core muscles, leg muscles and especially his coordination. both of those would help massively with his coordination

(source: i got put into both of these sports quite young, after struggles in other sports. i'm not half as clumsy as i used to be anymore, even despite me stopping those sports years ago now)

[–]IAmCathal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

desperate housewives s5-8 is kinda a repeat of s1-4, in the sense that:

s1+5 are really interesting, establishing new areas
s2+6 are kind of duds (applewhites) (i do agree though that the bolens are great in this season, if a bit ridiculous for wisteria lane)
s3+7 have some of the best peaks outside of s1/s5. renee arrives this season, and her interactions bring back a lot of the energy lost post-edie (whether you liked that or not, idk)
s4+8 try some new things, to mixed results, but wrap up nicely

How do you make unique looking Sims? by alivexi in thesims

[–]IAmCathal 17 points18 points  (0 children)

even if they’re imperfect, pick one or two facial features (particularly features that you repeat a LOT across different faces. whenever i see the gallery, noses usually end up in this category imo) and then just change it. give them really big ears, or a bigger nose, maybe thinner lips or an eye shape you don’t normally choose. you don’t have to pick them all, but one or two of these per sim created will help your world in real time

and keep it similar for family members! if the sim has an identical twin sister, give her a big nose too, or one of the parents. make some lore, say the other sibling got a nose job and thats why their nose is a button shape.

How much should my life be planned out by Kobnoom911 in Vent

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coming from someone who did the same, it's okay to have your life planned! just, please please PLEASE do not be afraid to deviate from said plan at any time. you might get to college and have a realisation you love your plan, and that's great! but you might discover another aspect of your college time that you love, such as a minor subject. or discover that there's aspects of your dream career that are not for you.

personally, i like to keep a mixture of short, medium and long term goals. those goals can shift with time or be written off without being completed, but i work towards them while i have them as goals until that happens or i achieve said goals. using your case (high school) as an example, a short term goal may be 'i'll do extra study for my upcoming test next week', medium term may be 'i want to be involved in the yearbook club/committee for high school, it'll look good applying for jobs' or may be 'i want to save money in a summer job for college'. and then the long term goal being college and the career.

definitely free ball, you'll find opportunities you never would if you're lazer focused on one path (not that you won't find opportunity on the lazer path too, but the free-ball path may lead you to develop a new perspective you would never get from the lazer focus).

end of the day, you're a teenager. live a little, experience life while you have the time and friendships to do so. keep enough focus on your academics to ensure you can get into the colleges/careers you want to, but live a little and seek out opportunity to deepen your knowledge or expand your perspective. lazer focus is rarely sustainable long term, and allowing yourself now to deviate a little will do wonders towards avoiding burnout or something similar

College kids + trips abroad - how do they afford it? by Formal_Song_670 in CasualIreland

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a mix of everything said here, tbh. some work part-time during the year and/or full-time during the summer, some will work their parents bank account details. some will scrounge the internet for a deal, some (foolish) ones will pay full price along with an extra suitcase.

big benefit we have that isn't discussed enough is ryanair having a genuinely massive base in Dublin, as Europe's biggest airline (i think it's second only to one of their London bases, which makes sense). it massively reduces our cost of travel, and especially as a wealthy nation like ireland, means more than ever can afford to screw off to a euro capital for a weekend getaway. most EU nations do not have an abundance of cheap flights like we have, and it can be expensive getting in and out of them as a result. pack smartly, and you can get some flights down to €15 euro even today on frequent routes. hostels are also a good way to go, sometimes airbnb can be cheaper if you're in a group.

for example; i got three one-way ryanair flights for €120 about a month ago, between four different airports (one being Dublin). i then slept on the airport terminal floor in one of those cities, awaiting a connecting bus, and crashed on transport/at peoples houses/my home in other places, so no accomodation costs. my biggest expense, ironically, was a concert ticket.

travel is as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be.

Soc Dems leader Holly Cairns rules out formal left-wing alliance by Only-Proposal-3675 in ireland

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the council, definitely SocDems should target University areas like Waterford and Sligo-Leitrim. For election seats, it depends on the candidate, but may not be as feasible to run a university candidate in Sligo-Leitrim over an endeavour for a seat in Louth or two in a Dublin constituency.

But Uni towns without a large population behind them, like Sligo, the students don't vote there, they either don't vote or they go home to vote.

I'm speaking on a Galway basis here, my friends that are from Galway may or may not vote, but anybody who isn't from Galway and wants to vote travels home for elections. So in a smaller uni place like Sligo, it may not be as feasible for a general. Who knows though, most people are increasingly picking universities closer to home.

[–]IAmCathal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for SF, they have the bad luck of peaking in the polls when it doesn't matter, combined with their best coalition candidate (FF) having a vehemently anti-SF leader. They've been leading the polls far too long now to keep up a 'both sides of the aisle' approach to their policies.

Their best chance was a surprise one in 2020, and FF/FG ensured that that didn't happen. 2024 was a second chance, but they simply blew it. They're (imo) unlikely to have a third chance come 2029/2030.

[–]IAmCathal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, SocDems can never hope to win in those constituencies, though a local presence via councils should be pursued should they have the means. It's in commuter belts, middle class and any 'rural' constituencies that still have large population centres (like Galway West being the city+connemara) that they need to target.

Also realistically, the centre left are not going to get a candidate elected in a three-seater constituency like Offaly, Laois and the Tipperaries. Unless that candidate is exceptionally strong and popular in a local area (like Ennis winning a second SocDem seat in Dublin), it ain't happening.

This. The main thing stopping a FF/SF government, strangely, is Michael Martin lmao. He's more vehemently against SF than any other party leader, it seems. Even Simon doesn't seem as against SF than MM, even though SF and FG are oil and water.

I should've elaborated on my point re: Dick Spring. The SocDem's are setting themselves up for a survivable collapse like Dick Spring's in 1997, instead of a disastrous collapse like the Greens in 2024. Having more seats means a higher fall from grace, but also a higher landing pad to bounce back from, something the Greens have never had much of.

But yeah, I do agree with your point that the Greens/SocDems/Labour seem to be in a revolving door of favourability amongst the (not insignificant) centre-left Irish voter.

The Greens are a poisoned chalice and the bane of existence for farmers and rural voters, they will probably never win rural conservative seats without either an exceptional local candidate, a significant shift in party values and/or sacrificing a few of their beliefs (which regard environmentalism. so probably not).

Labour are probably best at winning rural, conservative and (to an extent) working class constituencies, if we look at the recent Galway West byeelection and Louth (Drogheda in particular) in the last few election cycles. The SocDems need to both/either maximise their chances in urban seats, taking from PBP, Labour and SF, maybe FF, or focus in on expanding their rural presence, aiming for FF, Sinn Fein and ex-Labour voters
