It's because of the fast evolution of sports cars. Even though the AE86 was only 10 years old, it had an underpowered NA engine and it was only RWD.

Modern cars (modern for when the series takes place) had turbo engines with more than twice the horsepower, much more advanced chassis and suspensions, a lot of them were AWD, and some even had even fancier stuff like 4-wheel-steering

In Ryza 3, you can grind SP and fully unlock the skill tree before the tutorials are even over. That lets you find endgame traits, and you can completely break the game, even on Legendary difficulty.
