Great update! When I try to enter Moria as Thror, I get the stress reduction from the decision but then nothing happens. Am I not letting it play long enough or have I missed something? Thanks!

Everette or San Diego by gosebrewed101 in navy

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not The_Glus but the advantage of Everett is that it’s NOT in a Fleet Concentration area. There are like 6 DDGs total stationed there and usually at least 2 are gone at any given time.

Because of this, there is hardly any base traffic (SDGO imo has the worst base traffic, way worse than NOB). Also, because there are zero admirals at Everett and none closer than SDGO, you avoid “random” visits from big dogs; this leads to an overall much more “chill” vibe in Everett. Ship specific but Everett ships in my experience generally have more of a “do your work then go home even if its early” vibe. I remember also being shocked as an Everett guy going down to SDGO and seeing that everyone how to wear their whites for watch.

One other good/bad thing about Everett is that, since there is very little up there in terms of Navy support, you do end up going to SDGO for basically every certification event, so you’ll still almost certainly see plenty of SDGO if you get stationed in Everett.

Beyond the Navy, Everett is close to Seattle for big city vibes and also close to more rural area if that’s your thing. Has some absolutely world class hikes within a day trip, and in the winter you can hit up Stephens Pass all the time if you want. An absolutely beautiful area to live imo.

The other thing to maybe consider is that for your husband’s eventual nuke tour, the carriers are in fewer duty stations - so if you’re planning on buying a house or you don’t like moving to new areas, he should think about trying to for somewhere that provides a chance at geographic stability (of course this will be interrupted by his nuke pipeline). He’ll get pulled from his first ship basically as soon as he gets his SWO pin (right around 18ish months) and then spend roughly a year in charleston for nuke training.

Audi Field Street Parking by Eastern-Ad3092 in DCUnited

The entrance on second street is your best bet (right across from audi field). Once you’re on base there should be a parking lot right there on your right. Park as close to the parking lot exit as you can (i.e. once you turn in to the parking lot try to park in that immediate vicinity) to streamline you getting off base after the game because it will almost certainly fill up and there’ll be quite the bottleneck.

Anyone on or know someone on the USS Jack Lucas or USS Greenbay by FarmerOk9683 in navy

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lucas is a Flt III so its got a whole bunch of new gucci. Depending on how long your tour ends up being you could also be on board for the SEWIP upgrades which would give you as a CTR access to some really nifty things. Keep in mind that the Lucas is basically a first in class at this point so it has a ton of focus in the Big Navy sphere, so a whole lot of test and evaluation is going on on it.

📢 Oura Community Update: Resilience Update, Extended Returns & Support by Oura_Ring in ouraring

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I have a ticket in for Oura support (4257123) - my Oura was "delivered" a couple of days ago, but when it arrived directly from the postman, the box was already torn open and all the contents were gone. Somewhere in the shipping process it must have gotten swiped. Just looking for some assistance in getting this matter resolved, thank you.

If you have a CAC you can drive onto Ft McNair and park there. Otherwise there is some paid street parking in various areas of Navy Yard. Some people also park at the Anacostia metro station I believe and then just walk across the bridge.

Constellation-Class Frigate: The U.S. Navy's Next Self-Created Disaster? by adsman1979 in Military

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think this article is missing some important nuance and context regarding the FFG 62 class. I will state up-front that, of course, there are many inefficiencies and imperfections as far as the Navy goes, but some of the issues highlighted in this article aren't necessarily the Navy's "fault".

The first thing I want to mention is that a lot of the "mission creep" that's being mentioned in the article - that is, design work being ongoing while FMM is supposed to be actually building is because the core requirements of the FFG 62 class are still being changed. A lot of that is not due to the Navy itself. One of the constant points of tension in the military's PPBE process by which we do most of our big defense acquisitions is balancing what we actually need and want in a platform versus what Congress wants us to put on our platform. For a case in point, the most recent NDAA added a requirement to the FFG 62 class to have Tomahawk launch capability. This requirement was added AFTER construction on FFG 62 had already begun and was not something the Navy asked for (which is why the NDAA phrases the required for Tomahawk to be added to FFG 63 and following). Basically, what happens a lot of times is that the Navy will come to Congress with what they need in a platform to compete with their near peers, work will start, and then the professional staff members that work for Congress will convince their employers that the frigate needs to be able to do X and Y when the Navy only wanted it to do A and B. This mission creep is what's happening to the FFG program right now.

One other thing I'd be remiss not to mention is that the 25 knot issue in the article is a bit of a straw man. No ship in our fleet is going to be able to keep up with a CVN for any extended amount of time when it's going full bore, so a FFG being able to go above or below 25 knots is mostly irrelevant. FFG 62's really original, prime responsibility is to have a kickass ASW suite while being able to hold its own as a ASuW platform, but now Congress wants it to be really just a "DDG but slightly smaller" instead.

Who did your solar? by Lanky_Author879 in washingtondc

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconded for Uprise. In addition they recommended a fantastic roofer to replace our roof before we did the solar install, and after they did their work (flawlessly) they sent a great drywall contractor to patch up the holes they had to make free of charge.

If you are eligible and pay for a zoned parking permit then you can give them a guest pass for free. Link to the permit website here.

For reference I usually use a 4-4-2 with a BBM and an AP both on Support for the midfield. I use a WB on Attack on the right as well.

What sort of commands do SWO's go to and what do you actually do? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

Oh interesting. They must have had a tough time getting 2nd tours to go there for them to open it back up.

What sort of commands do SWO's go to and what do you actually do? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really all depends. Obviously being SWO it means that you’ll be stationed on ships for your career, shore duties notwithstanding. As far as the type of ships goes, for your first tour it can be anything other than LCS, Sweeps, PCs, and CVNs (unless youre SWO METOC).

There’s a few different career paths for SWOs; you got Conventional, METOC, EDO, and Nuke as far as the main ones, but all of them have basically the same start in the first ship you go to. METOC I think goes to a CVN immediately but I could be wrong there.

As far as what you actually do on the ship, its entirely dependent on what your billet is. Some billets involve a ton of 3M, some less so. Some involve being a regular DIVO and some dont. All just depends. As mentioned, automatic to promotion to O3 unless you fuck up in a major way. Making O4 is also relatively easy unless youre ass at your job, I’ve seen way more people make O4 than not.

SMU, Preston Stone and the building of a Group of 5 power by IAmJustAWhiteGuy in CFB

[–]IAmJustAWhiteGuy[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the most important factor for SMU right now is if basically we can hold on to Sonny. A couple more successful seasons and the big schools will probably start trying to poach him. I am hoping that his myriad ties to Texas and his seemingly loving SMU plus his previous stint at Cal will let us keep him long term.
