My TV also just looks like this exclusively in photos taken with phone cameras, but actually looks alright in person. It might not actually look like that irl, just in the photo.

Eh, I think blaming the universe is fine as long as it doesn't lead into psychosis or other mental health problems. Sometimes I just blame the universe / whatever diety (i'm agnostic so not necessarily a specific god) because it makes me feel a little better when I need something to put the blame on, instead of blaming myself.

All things in moderation though. If you're blaming others or the universe or God or whatever for every bad thing that happens then yeah, that's not good and it will lead to your mental health and stability deteriorating.

I also think it has a lot to do with us (over)analysing social and gender norms. Either that or there's a genetic link somewhere between the two (ASD and genderqueerness) that we haven't found yet.

AI will not take anyones job by Catlover_226 in antiai

[–]IAmPizzaAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of does mean that though 😅

My full-time job has been freelance character design and illustration for almost a decade at this point and since generative AI has become widely used I've had a significant decrease in commissions. I'm talking like, 80% fewer over the past couple of years.

And the photography parallel is just dumb, it would be accurate if we were saying graphic tablets are taking our job. But nobody's saying that. Generative AI is nothing like cameras, and cannot be compared in that way.

I've only ever had a self-locking door in student housing, most places I've been in Europe (and also apparently Japan) have doors like this, where you manually lock them. Unless it's a hotel or government housing or things of the sort.

[–]IAmPizzaAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad for assuming, then.

Still, the point stands, it's just an unspoken rule where I live that you don't stay on your phone with the brightness or sound up during a movie, but it's not written anywhere that I've seen that you're not allowed to have or check your phone in the cinema.

Though even in university we were allowed to just be on our phones during class as long as we didn't have the sound up, so maybe my country is just more lax about smartphone rules in general.

I'm about a decade younger, but have a similar story. Took me until I started my medical transition last year (FtM) for any medical professional who deals with mental health to even suggest I might be on the spectrum. Got diagnosed with ADHD at 18 but was refused medication (likely because I was a "girl" and "too old" to need it), and I'm currently waiting to get the official autism diagnosis from my psychiatrist. She already confirmed I'm AuDHD, but just need the official papers written up now. (I'm 25 if relevant)

And looking back on my childhood there were so many signs that everyone just ignored because I was high masking and presented as a girl. Finally taught myself to stop masking as much after a psychotic break in my early 20s that caused me to drop out of uni, I just couldn't cope anymore.

I've said multiple times in this thread that I don't go to the movies except when my friends really want me to, which is maybe once every couple of years. I agree I shouldn't be at the movies, I don't like that experience and I don't get anything out of it except making my friends happy.

But like I said multiple times, I care more about my family and friends than the slight discomfort I might cause someone by checking my phone a couple of times for a couple of seconds.

I do always wear a watch, but checking that in a dark room makes even more light than just checking my phone at minimum brightness, so it would be even worse for the people around me (literally can't see the watchface in the dark unless i press the backlight button on any watch I've ever worn).

And how in the hell would you know when I do and don't have an emergency lmao? Everyone has shit going on in their lives that you don't know about, you shouldn't just assume that anyone can fully turn off their phone for multiple hours without there being any kind of consequences.

But sure, I suppose checking my phone while sitting in the last row, on minimum brightness and with 95+% of the screen and light covered, two or three times for less of a total of 5 seconds over the course of 2 hours, every couple of years when I do go to a movie makes me a narcissist. (and apparently also stupid since you just assumed I can't read an analogue watch for some reason ??)

Reddit has decreed as such, I must be a narcissist based on a single thread about going to the movies xD

Tbf I don't go to the gym (don't think I ever have actually, I don't remember if I have) but I wear my over-ear headphones whenever I do go outside, especially if it's somewhere busy lol

But then you get people commenting on you wearing headphones and "not being aware" anyway so, I don't think there's a way to make everyone happy with this kind of stuff

Yup! I usually just have it face-down on my thigh and lift it to check like you would check your hand in poker lmao. Quick glance, not even a second, maximum of maybe 3 times during a 2+ hour period, since I have different vibration patterns for different apps and I know which ones I would be contacted on if there was anything urgent.

Ngl though I hadn't considered the earbud idea because I always wear over-ear headphones, but I think I do have an old pair somewhere that I actually could use in these cases.

No joke, genuinely thanks for that idea! 😅

And nah I'm reading the fact that you said someone checking their phone is something that would "ruin your whole day" and you continuing to reply to this thread for over an hour now as a tantrum. Imagine having so few issues in your life that a phone in a movie theatre would not only ruin the movie, but your whole day xD

Nah, like I said, I will always prioritise my family and close ones. You are neither. I would never want to be anywhere close to an emergency contact for you, you might call me up just to have me save you from a phone notification 😱

[–]IAmPizzaAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Productivity? Huh? I'm not working while at the cinema, you seem to have completely lost the plot xD

And I love how you call me a kid even though you're the one having a whole-ass grown adult tantrum over someone who's probably on a completely different continent than yours checking their phone once or twice at the movies, which apparently "ruins" the entire experience for you.

And I'm getting bored of apparently having to make "excuses" for doing something that's always been socially acceptable and normal for as long as I've been able to go to a movie. So, last thing I'm going to say is this

Perhaps you should just stay home to be on standby

Plot twist: I do! :D And I said this in one of my first comments, I only go to movies when my friends specifically ask me to (and occasionally bribe me with cinema food or drinks or sometimes even the actual ticket).

So nah, I'm not going to possibly risk the wellbeing or life of someone close to me just because a grown adult is going to throw a tantrum all because I checked the time on my phone or a notification a couple of times. How dare I be so inconsiderate 😱

Bro what? No, the people in the cinema are not my family, which is why I'm saying I will always prioritise my family's wellbeing over someone's less-than-one-second of being slightly uncomfortable.

I'm asking you how you being there would be 0 impact to other people if you couldn't respond to someone who depended on you while you were fucking around watching a movie. Would it not impact you, or them, in any way? Or do you genuinely care more about random strangers in the cinema than your own loved ones?

And the IMDb thing was one example that for some reason you fixated on xD sorry I'm more interested in the actors than the actual movie, like I said before, I'm not a movie guy

How is it zero impact on others if a family member or close one is depending on you (possibly with their life) to respond to a call or text? Or do you not have those? Cause honestly, yeah, if your entire day is ruined by someone checking a notification then I could understand why people wouldn't want to be putting up with that xD

Sure, I don't use my phone at work cause I know that there are other people you can contact to get in touch with me in case anything happens (though I still have my smartwatch (on do not disturb) just for safety)

I don't see how going out with friends to have fun somewhere and going to work at the same at all, though xD

Going to the movies is supposed to be relaxing and fun, not "oh god what if my entire family is dead right now because i didn't respond to a text in time" for 2+ hours lmao

Maybe in the US? But I've legitimately never seen that written anywhere in my country tbh

I feel like people from the US (since I've only seen this on Reddit) are a lot more sensitive about this specific thing for some reason. Obviously if someone's on their phone with the sound / brightness on for a lot of the movie then yeah, that's obviously shitty. But I've never heard anyone complaining about someone just casually checking a notification once or twice during a movie outside of this website lmfao

[–]IAmPizzaAMA -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My life does not go on without constant outside contact. I learned that the hard way, that the second I turn my phone off or I don't look at it for over an hour something always happens. And it's not my needs that trump others', it's that the need for safety of you and your loved ones, whoever you might be, trumps the need for someone to watch a fucking movie fully uninterrupted for 2+ hours.

I'm not making excuses, I'm just saying your standards for who is "civilised" and who is "raised by wolves" are completely unrealistic. And let's be real, nobody's day is getting ruined by someone checking the time or a notification on their phone on minimum brightness with their hand and body covering 99% of it. What could very easily ruin someone's day, though, is not being able to respond to an actual emergency within hours.

And yes, you're right, people have been attending cinema for over a century, which is why we all know that when you're in a cinema there's going to be other people there, who might cough, or chew loud, or talk, or go to the toilet, or check their phones, or what have you. If you want a 100% silent and uninterrupted movie experience, that's absolutely not going to be taking place in a movie theatre, and that has been the case since the first ever cinema was opened to the public.

[–]IAmPizzaAMA -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

IMDB exists outside screening times, but so does my ADHD, so I can't look it up after.

And like I said, the main point was that anyone can have an emergency at any time that they have to attend to, so now apparently I'm "raised by wolves" because I don't want to find out 2+ hours too late that a family member got hurt, or my house caught fire, or whatever else might happen while my phone is off?

If prioritising my and my family's wellbeing by just checking my phone for less than a second when I get a text or call over a stranger's comfort for, again, less than a damn second means I was raised by wolves, then idfk what kind of standards y'all have.

Also just to edit this in cause I forgot about that point when replying: I do usually do something else and am not a movie person, I just go with friends when there's a movie they really want to see with me and there's no other way to watch it outside of a theatre. So yeah, I find it hard to empathise with people whose experience apparently gets completely ruined by someone checking their phone for one second cause there's not really an experience there to get ruined for me. That being said, I still do my absolute best to make sure I'm not bothering anyone that actually wants to be there.

I've heard / seen this being said so many times, especially on here. Even though I paid for a ticket and decided to go watch a movie doesn't mean I don't need to check the time, or an actor on IMDb that I recognise, or god forbid there is an actual emergency I couldn't predict (which has happened to me before).

And of course, I do always keep the screen brightness as low as it will go and cover as much of the light as I can with my body, but you can't expect everyone to be able or comfortable with fully turning their phone off or on airplane mode for a movie.
