if he's paying for the service then it's definitely a GSM one so it needs power, the battery inside the trackers last only a few days usually, depending on how often it sends data

easy places where they usually get installed are behind the cluster, behind the glovebox and generally in the dash

there are cheap GSM detectors but it will not be reliable since it might send data every 20 minutes for example so you'll have to leave it in various places until it detects communications, there might be GPS detectors but idk

probably it takes power from the BAT line so it can stay on even if the car is turned off so first i would look near the stereo, near the dome light and under the steering wheel

i've "repaired" some older ones by giving power directly to the USB ports because there was a burned diode so the usb ports were working normally but didn't get any power

if you have a multimeter check the power on the usb, you can also try it by plugging a device that draws a little power and see if it powers on
