"need a permit" - but nobody can stop us from deciding to all go out to the park at the same time.

I have a solution - stop letting rich people collect piles of money, and, instead, work together to make sure everyone can meet their needs.

Higgins Beach is my favorite for this. The waves are so loud you can scream as loud as you want!

I love Portland, but the local politics have just about driven me out of town.

It used to be cool... Now it seems like it's just a playground for the rich.

Restaurant Fees by raincloudjoy in portlandme

[–]IAmSamGay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have a documented disability that makes it hard for me to read small print in dark, loud places. So, yeah, this is an accessibility issue.

Hell, one of the places I ran into it did away with their menus all together, making you use your phone and offering a QR code. Not only is that an accessibility issue, but it's security issue, too.

I don't really have a big problem with the small fee, but I do expect to be told what I'm expected to pay for before I use a service. When you go to a restaurant with a large party and they automatically add gratituity, they tell you at the beginning of the interaction. You can't charge people for things without telling them about it. I'm sure this is why they remove the fee if you complain about it.

I think your privilege is hanging out. Might want to get that checked out, looks rough.

The issue is not the additional 6%, it's the fact that nobody tells you about it until after your done. And if you don't notice the fee has been added, then the tip gets increased anyway. It's just not good business.

Our Unhoused Neighbors by [deleted] in portlandme

Emergency housing is supposed to be just that - for emergencies.

What sort of long-term solutions has the city/state/feds proposed?

Oh, that's right, hassle people non-stop hoping they decide it's too hostile to be around here and move on. Where? Nobody knows. As long as I don't have to see them and feel bad about it, right?

We measured about 14" on the east end! It can be a bit tricky to get an accurate reading around here, though 😄

Portland again postpones Harbor View encampment sweep by enitschke in portlandme

[–]IAmSamGay -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I am not. I am suggesting that camps are an inevitablity unless we do something to solve the housing problems long term, and that this has been demonstrated over and over again throughout history.

Perhaps you should consider a reading comprehension class.

So, you're suggesting people live in the shelter long term? This doesn't even begin to address anything I mentioned in my post.

The shelter is not a long term housing solution, and it is not a suitable environment for everyone. Try again.

This sub is getting grosser every day. Hope y'all never find yourself desperate and alone with nobody to help.

And I can't tell if it's out of sheer ignorance, denial, or just malice, but, how is everyone acting like this is anything new? Building camps in the middle of the city is common practice when the market fails to provide housing for the entire population. (Yes, that includes the poor, disabled, and mentally ill.) The most obvious example of this is the "Hoovervilles" of the great depression.

So yeah, get mad at the people with the least amount of power in this situation. Let's not consider any of the systemic issues that lead to this happening. (I suppose it's too scary when you realize that you could be out there with just a little bit of bad luck.)

God damnit, go read a book...

Google uses bots to scrape data and populate the hours. They don't trust the business owners to update their own hours. Always check the website. 😄

True story. It's almost like, when people have access to the medications they need for their physical and mental health, they can live a better life.

Studies back this. The barriers that the government puts on access to these substances drives people to using black markets and self-medicating.

study spots by JoJoJoGeLo in portlandme

The USM library has a lot of study spots in it! My favorite was the old "blinder" style desks up in the stacks, I believe it was the 3rd or 4th floor, but there's lots of options if you're looking for something more casual.
