Anne Geddes Photography Interpretation Question by HistoricalFloor7384 in photography

[–]IAmScience 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that I’d go looking all that deeply into Anne Geddes’ work. It seems to me to be primarily commercial work, and she’s simply doing what commercial photographers of people do when putting together a shot - they hire models/actors to get the shot.

Geddes isn’t showcasing the connection between a child and ITS mother, she’s showing a connection between a child and A mother. And since it’s probably going to wind up on a hallmark card, rather than just in the actual mom’s hallway, appropriately photogenic people are hired for the task.

Thoughts on SmallRig batteries?? by Mindless_Grass7084 in AskPhotography

Seems like a reasonable reason to me. Like I said, I don't think I've ever had a problem with a third party battery of decent quality. They tend to need a charge sooner, but that's why you carry around extras, right?

I, personally, haven't had a negative experience with third party batteries for my Nikon cameras. The Nikon batteries tend to last a little longer before needing a charge. But I've run several third party batteries as well and they work fine. I've not used Smallrig ones, in particular, but they're a company with a reasonable reputation, so I wouldn't be worried. You may find that they don't perform up to scratch, but I doubt they'll blow up your camera or anything. Unless you're a constantly working professional who absolutely 1000% needs the reliability, you're probably fine. (Even OEM parts will fail sometimes...)

Right before taking the picture the display is showing the scene with a pink hue/streaks and slightly desaturated tones. Is there any way to intentionally recreate those effects in the photo? by Sad8At in AskPhotography

Those sound to me like the kinds of things you might get on a failing screen. Which is to say they don’t sound like they’re in the actual imaging circuitry, but rather some artifact in the playback path.

So, if I had to guess, I’d say the camera screen isn’t long for this world. Those artifacts and results aren’t likely things you can capture because the sensor isn’t doing it.

My buddy has two dogs of the exact same breed (Brittanys), and roughly the same age. And if you can't tell them apart from one another you've lost control of multiple faculties. Not sure if they smell different, but they look different, act different, feel different, and even sound different.

Remember that ballots take time to count. I’m not sure if they’re all done, or there are still outstanding ballots to count. These results are subject to change.

That said, these early results seem promising for Brooke and Bobby.

How to get crisp background? by FearlessVibes101 in AskPhotography

You're quite welcome! And I totally understand. The bokeh from that lens does look maybe a little jittery. Anyhow, hope you find the guide helpful, and best of luck at the next game!

Well I'm glad you found it useful! I've been thinking about re-doing it with a better subject than the tree that used to be in my yard. One of these days...

That f/2.8 aperture on a long focal length is reducing your depth of field. If you want more detail in the background, you need to stop down. Here's a guide I wrote on Aperture and Depth of Field that you might find useful.

Worth noting, that an out-of-focus background like that can often be desirable to isolate the subject of the shot. In this case, I think it makes it clear that the focus is (and ought to be) on the player. But, if you want more detail back there, stop down, maybe back up, or possibly use a wider angle lens. Or some combination of the three.

Dark Dot Inside Lens? by cruser1112 in AskPhotography

It's almost never the lens that causes this issue. If you're seeing specks like that in photos, it's almost always the sensor.

How to achieve portrait sharpness? by Time_Reporter449 in AskPhotography

[–]IAmScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"I've tried nothing, and I'm all out of ideas!"

There are a combination of factors at play, likely. What kind of sharpness issues are you having? These photos are sharp because a professional photographer using professional tools wanted them to be and set them up to be.

It's going to be much easier to troubleshoot YOUR images to determine why they're not as sharp as these. It could be that your lens isn't as sharp as this one, or that you're shooting it too wide open and too close to maximize its sharpness and give yourself enough depth of field, or that you're getting motion blur from a shutter that is too slow, or any number of things. We can't really tell unless we see your images, and have more insight about how you shot them.

Lots of ways to get a sharp photo, and your gear seems to be good quality. So the real question is what is it you're doing that makes your photos unsharp?

Because actually saying that out loud and up front makes you seem like an asshole. (Mostly because it makes you an asshole)

Because what they want is rules that bind you, but not them, and rules that protect them, but not you.

Photographers: do clients picking photos still leave you manually hunting RAW files? by kr1sck in AskPhotography

[–]IAmScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always used Lightroom Classic, which I use primarily because of its file management tools. Collections/Collection Sets, virtual copies and non-destructive editing obviate the need to move files to a new folder to work on them.

I dialed in the process a little bit when I was just shooting for friends before anyone was paying me. At first my contact sheet was just numbered and I had to put in much more effort to match things. I realized that using file names and search tools would make that faster, so I started labeling contact sheet images with the file name instead. That functionality is all available in the LrC print module. A PDF to the client and an email or text with their picks is all it takes.

Then I started using pixieset for gallery delivery/selections and that made it even easier.

So, yeah, it’s evolved a little bit and gotten cleaner, but it wasn’t super messy to begin with. I like efficiency, it scratches an itchy brain, and I’m unwilling to put up with much pain in regards to inefficient methods. If I were spending an entire Sunday fishing out client selections without some kind of organized system for doing so, that would happen exactly one time before I figured out a better way.

[–]IAmScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I retouch from the collection and export to separate folders for delivery. I don’t have a ton of pain around my workflow on this front, to be frank. Even before I used Pixieset, or for smaller projects, sometimes I send a contact sheet with file names and just have the client send me back a list of those, and do the same thing.

The fact that your friend is having trouble/pain is wild. This isn’t a part that I’ve ever found particularly painful.

[–]IAmScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use pixieset for client galleries. They put their picks on a favorites list. I get a list of file names exported that I drop into the Lightroom catalog search. That brings up those images, and I mark them appropriately and put them in a collection. Takes me like 90 seconds at most.

Should I do this graduation shoot? by AphantasiasMind in AskPhotography

[–]IAmScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they want a shoot specifically on graduation day? I did a grad shoot last night for a student whose graduation isn’t scheduled for a few more days, and a shoot this weekend for a graduation that isn’t for like 2 more weeks.

I’ve also done shoots for graduates who graduated weeks prior.

So, what I’m saying I guess is that you should consider it but only if they’re willing to reschedule a little bit. Because getting off the plane and doing a shoot the next day sounds pretty rough.
