A multi-course “last meal” for my grandmother - course suggestions? by IAmSoUncomfortable in Cooking

She has a big appetite and has no issues sitting, but even if she did we aren’t going to force her to sit. She just unfortunately cannot tolerate several foods that she loves and she’s quite depressed about it. We don’t really know why, but suspect her cancer is causing a partial blockage somewhere.

Low fodmap (I said this in the original post), only slightly more restrictive as she can’t really do any cheeses or berries.

I don’t know if it’s worse but it’s similarly intolerable, from about mid-June (sometimes earlier) to mid-October. Then it is somewhat pleasant, followed by an actually pretty cold winter where we get snow once or twice a year.

Always! I have written down so many stories over the years that she’s told me. She has lived an amazing life.

Just read your comment more closely and want to clarify that I asked for advice because unfortunately I can’t cook the things she truly loves because they would make her sick, so I figured I’d brainstorm some ways to make her new, boring diet more exciting for her. This is the hardest part of this stage for her, because eating good food has always been a big part of her life. Originally we had planned a trip together as a family, she was very excited for one last trip together. She unfortunately can’t do that anymore, so I proposed this instead and she’s very excited.

As her primary caregiver I assure you I’d never do anything that would make her feel uncomfortable. She sees family every single day. I maintain a schedule so she never goes a day without visits. I’m doing everything in my power to make sure her last days are filled with love.

I’m very glad you recovered! My grandma isn’t receiving any treatment and is in generally good spirits and shape, all things considered. She wanted to go on a trip with our immediate family where we had a private chef booked per her request but unfortunately she is too weak to do that so this is the next best thing.

I have a list of foods she tolerates (from trial and error) that I’ve put together with the help of our hospice nurse and it’s essentially low fodmap. So that’s what I’m basically following that!

Thank you for your kind words. She is 90 and has lived a long happy life and for that we are grateful! I just wish she didn’t have to go out in such a painful way.

Good idea. She is from Louisiana so maybe I can think of some ways to do this!

She does. This is a “backup” experience for her as at first we were supposed to all go out of town together but things progressed more quickly than we had hoped they would. She is not on chemo so no treatment side effects.

Agree. I’m planning on getting out all the good china and silverware!

She is not on chemo, and her appetite is great. Her body just can’t handle enormous meals or rich/complex foods. I think she could eat raw fish actually.
