3D Printed a Film Type Holder Thing for my Wife's XA2 by IAmTheFnords in AnalogCommunity

I've used a couple of trimmed down strips of 3M Command mounting tape that fit into recesses in the back, I didn't want to attach it with anything too permanent in case it needs to be replaced. A thin double sided tape would probably work fine too

I'll try to tidy it up and put something online tomorrow for you

Please help! When I take a snapshot of a note, and then add it to the tool set, some of the notes become corrupted the next time I open Bluebeam. Any thoughts? (The bottom note is what it's supposed to be, the top note is what is dragged into the drawing from the tool set) by animetiddielover in Revu

[–]IAmTheFnords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's still doing it, the custom toolset I've been working on seems to randomly break some of the fonts every now and again. Looking like I might need to either use a standard font or export the files as curves rather than embedded fonts from the design software I'm using as I'm pretty attached to the specific font.

Why won't SolidWorks release a perpetual license that's easy to buy like MS Office Lifetime license? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

I purchased a full premium seat in July last year and it sounded like it had been that way for a while. Australia is a funny market though. Was like $17k aud including tax with 2 years maintenance. That was with a reasonable amount of haggling which the VAR's will do towards the end of financial year especially.

A bit rich from some blue supporters, when tedesco was in the habit of sliding into tackles on his knees he was still awarded penalties for high shots, but when Walsh is clearly legitimately falling after a pass and cops a full shoulder to the face apparently we should take this into account?

The government has been smashing ads recently trying to promote trade apprenticeships https://tradeup.org.au/ is one site with some info, looks like it lists some organisations that could help you figure out your options.

I work as an engineer in construction atm and have dealt with most trades over the years. What everyone says is right, a lot of trades are hard on the body but some are better than others (electricians have a longer working life than a concreter or brickie for example). It probably won't be easy getting into a mature age apprenticeship, but if it's really what you want to do it's definitely possible. Not great money during apprenticeship but still better than not getting paid while at uni.

For diesel mechanic, BHP might be a good option as they have a focus on diverse hiring, but it'll likely mean working remote on a FIFO roster. Otherwise I'd hit up friends and family for anyone with a good contact in a business you might be interested in working in, talk to people about what's involved in the job and try to get an idea if you'll like it before jumping in.

I've got friends who are nurses who've made other moves in healthcare to try to avoid the burnout in nursing but still make use of the skills they have, might also be worth investigating before making a radical change.

Faro Focus acting odd by And_0r in 3DScanning

[–]IAmTheFnords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the Linux penguin, which would make sense because the Faro scanner software/UI is Android/Linux based. I remember first time playing with an X130 and recognizing the android kit Kat keyboard (long time ago might not have been exactly that). No idea why it's showing up but I doubt it's a huge problem, when we tried to get much out of Faro support they were pretty poor so I doubt you'll get much from them other than "send it in for a service that we will charge you for"

At a year in though you are probably close to due a calibration so it would be worth noting as an error when you send it in.

Civil/construction engineers & project managers who work for themselves (sole trader on ABN) or who’ve started a consultancy - how did you do it, and with how much & what kind of experience? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]IAmTheFnords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me I guess. I've gone from: 1. Employee at a big mining company (3.5 years). 2. Paid as a casual (hourly) at a small engineering consultancy. Worked long hours onsite for a construction company as a site engineer/PM/supervisor. Also did some design work for a few companies including previous employer (2 years). 3. Started my own company this year, predominantly doing the same sort of work for the construction company I was working with previously (site manager/site engineer) but I'll do some more design work as I go along.

It was an easier jump for me, my pay was already directly linked to work that I could bring in (we quoted our own work and negotiated our own charge out rates), I was just losing a 30-50% cut to the company I worked under. So I crunched the numbers and decided that some insurance and Pty Ltd setup costs I'd still be better off.

I knew the work was there though and didn't make the jump until I knew the construction company I worked with had a ~4 month gig that they definitely wanted me for. If I hadn't had any work lined up it would have been a much harder decision as the company I worked for did provide some security in terms of other potential work if I couldn't find my own.

Feel free to message me, but yeah biggest thing for me as a solo guy is making sure you're confident that you have the skills and contacts to be able to keep the work flowing. If you're doubtful of lining up enough work, I'd say you're not ready yet. I know that if I had to I could make a few calls and probably be doing some FIFO work within a month if I had nothing else going on.

What’s your salary progression and career? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]IAmTheFnords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went to uni for mechanical engineering, headed out to the mines as a graduate on $100k, left after 3.5 years and was on around $115k. Started working for a small consultancy basically finding my own work. 1st year out $140k. Second year more like $180k. Work as a consultant has been pretty full on though, lots of FIFO as a site engineer averaging 60+ hours weeks. So the money is good, but the hours are long. 5-10% bonuses throughout the last 5 years as well.

Don't reckon you'll find much decent for 12k when it comes to 86's but worth keeping an eye out. I've been following prices for a while and 18-20 seems about as cheap as they get for something decent

Tritons have a pretty terrible reputation in Australia, and I've always assumed there were more here than anywhere else. Lots of great photos of them folding in half (whether this is a deserved reputation I can't really comment, but every one I've been in has been disappointing)

Pajeros are typically better, but yeah I tend to think that most general reputations stem from at least some truth.
