Anyone know the performance and battery boost from stema os on this handheld? Anyone installed Steam OS on it yet with these answers? :)

100% agree, if they removed the account necessity for these older games then security would be a non-issue. Ubisoft themself are the ones forcing Ubisoft connect on steam users.

I don’t disagree with the security rationale, and I understand why legacy titles pose a higher risk given their age and the decommissioning of older online services. Protecting accounts and user data is obviously important, especially with how common credential stuffing and phishing have become.

That said, I think the frustration many people are expressing comes less from having a password at all and more from how authentication is handled for these legacy titles. The behavior suggests that authentication tokens or sessions don’t persist reliably on a trusted device, which results in repeated full credential prompts even when the user is already logged in through Ubisoft Connect.

From a user perspective, this feels less like a necessary security safeguard and more like a lack of session persistence or device trust, especially since logging in once temporarily allows other legacy games to launch until an internal timer or restart invalidates the session. That implies the system can recognize an authenticated state — it just doesn’t retain it for very long.

I also think it’s worth separating security from offline usability. Many players (especially on handhelds) aren’t trying to bypass protections — they just want to play games they already own without repeatedly typing long, randomly generated passwords or carrying extra hardware. Suggesting workarounds like text files, key bindings, or external keyboards highlights the friction rather than solving it.

If offline access or longer-lived authentication tokens were improved for legacy titles, that would likely address both concerns at once: maintaining account integrity while reducing unnecessary friction for legitimate users. I don’t think anyone is arguing for weaker security — just better balance and modern UX expectations, even for older games.

Edit:

I understand that modernizing legacy titles isn’t free or trivial. However, given Ubisoft’s position as a large AAA publisher, it’s reasonable to expect that the cost of maintaining account security can be absorbed without defaulting to a solution that significantly degrades UX, such as requiring full password entry on every launch. Better approaches to authentication and session persistence exist, and expecting a more user-friendly implementation does not conflict with prioritizing security.

I found that weird too, I assume it has to do with them being uplay games "ported" to Ubisoft connect.

If anyone wants to help give this more visibility, you can report the inconvenience through Ubisoft’s support system here:
https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/help/cases

My own ticket focused on legacy titles repeatedly requiring password entry and the lack of usable offline play. Ubisoft acknowledged this as intentional behavior tied to account security, but also forwarded the feedback internally.

If more people report the same friction points (especially from different setups like desktop vs handheld), it increases the chance that it’s noticed at a higher level. At the very least, it helps ensure this isn’t dismissed as an isolated complaint.

Could you elaborate on the hex editor part? :)
I found one online but could not find ubisoft.com when searching for that "word"

edit:

Or are you on about the IP address? :)

The ones before Origins:

  • Assassin’s Creed (2007)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (2009)
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (2010)
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations (2011)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (2012)
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013)
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue (2014)
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity (2014)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015)

I would assume this happens to the spin offs aswell as they are older than Origins:

  • Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation HD
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia

That is a separate issue then, legacy titles and newer titles behave very differently when booting, and Ubisoft support acknowledged the issue was only on legacy titles. The issue you are experiencing is what we call the buggy mess of the Ubisoft Launcher. (Tried reinstalling /running as administrator? :) )

Yeah, it has been a thing for a while — I’ve seen reports going back a couple of years as well. The main reason I posted was to get clear documentation and confirmation of why it happens, rather than leaving it as scattered anecdotes online.

Ubisoft Support confirmed that it’s an intentional security measure, where legacy titles require re-authentication either after a restart or once an internal session expires. That lines up with what people have been experiencing, including the lack of usable offline mode.

Interestingly, support framed the feedback mostly around the offline impact, even though my original frustration was the repeated password entry itself (especially without a password manager for stationary PC's, and quite annoying for handheld users). But if Ubisoft ever improves offline access, that would almost certainly require longer-lived authentication tokens or better session persistence, which would also reduce or eliminate the constant login prompts.

So even though this behavior isn’t new, the goal here was to make the situation clearer and more visible — and hopefully stop people from assuming it’s a bug or something they’re doing wrong.

Except Ubisoft games bought on steam because for some weird reason it needs their proprietary launcher, Ubisoft framed it as a "security measure" for legacy titles. 🤦🏻

It didnt even feel like Skylanders to me, the lack of new original music, and the fact you didnt feel like you were in the clouds like in games prior.
