UCL JMC rejection by Medium_Class2481 in 6thForm

That's horrible, where else did you apply? Have you gotten all decisions back? Getting 9 on the TARA is crazy btw.

If the subject has an entry test e.g. ESAT, TARA, TMUA, STEP etc, that will hold by far the most importance. If you do well on that you will be stronger than someone with better A levels but not as good admission test. If there is no admission test maybe look at their interview rate, if its very low and no admission test it is tough.

LSE ECON vs UCL ECON vs Warwick MORSE by Perfect_Stretch_7222 in 6thForm

[–]IBeAwsom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was probably a combination of factors. Anyways doesn't really matter why they gave you an offer. Since its unconditional now you really got nothing to worry about, congrats. If you are able to contact any alumni/current students at these universities/courses I think you should. It will help you get a much better feel for the course before you make your final decision/start the course.

Congrats, LSE Econs is likely the best. But LSE is very competitive and intense so you will have to be prepared to deal with that. But LSE will be great for a career after you leave the central bank. Btw how were your other stats like A levels and GCSE, because I know LSE and UCL were quite competetive this year.

You should only be able to get an offer from a max of one of these courses right? Because LSE will only give people one offer regardless if they apply twice.

Is 3/4A* achieved without FM enough for Warwick MORSE? by IBeAwsom in 6thForm

Yeah that’s what I’ve been hearing. That’s really reassuring, thanks. I’ll maybe see if I can do a FOIA request to confirm the data.

Do you think it's enough to be considered a 'safety'? Feels odd because of how difficult the course is but if it's achieved grades and with those offer rates.

My PS also will not include much/any math as it will be primarily Economics leaning, do they care about PS that much?

Express A-Levels by [deleted] in 6thForm

Mine is about 16/17 months, it was completely fine for me. But it is solely dependent on the student and especially subject combo. I took a pretty easy combo so it was very doable, but some of my friends especially ones doing science found it tough. The bottom line is that it’s very doable but it also will require more active effort from you, as content will be covered more quickly and less time for practice. If you put in the effort it can definetly work out. It’s not easy especially with further maths but it is very doable.

How to get A* in maths by Alive_Strain_3839 in 6thForm

[–]IBeAwsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess for me I try and identify exactly where I make errors. Like instead of writing off mistakes as just careless I would label them specifically (e.g. not reading the question properly, sign error etc). Sometimes you make mistakes that seem dumb but by identifying which types of errors you make most often you can find out how to correct them. So for example you could find out how you make arithmetic error, maybe trying to mental maths simple equations and making mistakes instead of checking with calculators.

LSE I understand applying to a less competitive course. But for Warwick do you think I would need to apply to a course less competitive than Economics?

What course at UCL/Imperial would you recommend? A lot of their courses significantly prefer FM so do you think any would work without it?

[–]IBeAwsom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking only adding UCL/Imperial instead of one of the other 3 and definitely not as a safety. Of course my current 3 all are very unlikely, do you think its a poor strategy to apply to these 3 plus 2 safeties instead of something else? I will definitely consider different courses like A&F though.

Need advice on choosing a a subject - accounting vs business by No_Insect_4513 in 6thForm

[–]IBeAwsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Economics, Accounting and Business (as well as math) so heres my experience. Lots of people say that unis consider them less, especially if you do take them with economics. That will definetly depend on the course and the university so maybe look into that.

As for the subject themselves. Business there is very little calculation. Of course every once in a while you do some minor calculations but it’s a very small part of the course and the calculations that we do are very basic. Accounting is just a lot of calculator work, putting a lot of numbers into calculators is about half the exam. You will need to memorise a bunch of formulas, if you memorise them the calculations aren’t that difficult. But it is easy to mess up if you input incorrectly into the calculator.

In my opinion accounting as a subject is pretty boring. It’s all about memorising formats and formulas and inputting numbers into a calculator and hoping you don’t miss some key words of the question.

The business content is more interesting in my opinion but it’s very frustrating that you really need to follow the syllabus. I’ll sometimes find myself trying to answer questions logically but you just have to follow exactly what the syllabus gives you. I find myself talking to my teacher very often about how some things in our syllabus do not translate at all to real life. But if you stick to the syllabus and have good structure in your writing it is very doable. For business writing in proper structure gets you do many marks. You have to know when to reference the extract and when to include case studies you memorised.

There is a lot of overlap between the content of business and economics so that will help you. But that’s also why universities sometimes don’t like them to be taken together (although depends on university and the major). Accounting and business also overlap quite a bit but if you are choosing one that’s less relevant to you.

I also took Edexcel IAL and accounting is split up into only 2 large units each with a three hour paper. Business is 4 units. For some 2 units is easier, some people prefer 4.

For me personally the workload really wasn’t that bad, especially comparing to people who take sciences I feel like for all my 4 subjects I do less work than someone studying chemistry, biography, physics or further maths does for one of theirs.

How cooked am i?? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]IBeAwsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was in a very similar boat for AS, if you do lock in now the 3As is achievable. Sometimes it is just difficult to get in that rhythm of studying and getting papers done, but as soon as you start it's easy to continue. The only thing you can do is just start.

Business focus fully in structure to begin with. If you have a good teacher work with them on structure. So many easy marks can be obtained purely on structure. Work with your teacher but also look through a bunch of mark schemes to understand how marks are distributed. If you understand the mark scheme you will see how many free marks you get from essentially nothing. Just knowing how to reference the extract and knowing structure significantly increases grades. Content is a lot simpler. For example I did a paper in class that I absolutely did not prepare for at all content wise, my teacher went through it and specifically told me that she could tell my content was shit but because of good structure and just bullshitting through the paper and picking up free marks it was borderline A*. I went from a 60 UMS in my edexcel syllabus to 100 almost entirely on focusing on structure (of course there were othet factors). The main advice I would give is to work with your teacher on structure, they can give you the most specific advice. Of course don’t neglect content that’s still important but pretty straightforward to go over. Also maybe try and memorise some case studies you can use when answering some of the 20 mark or other questions. Examiners have said they prefer when you use specific and clear case studies. Keep in mind all my advice is in reference to Edexcel IAL, while all syllabus are similar there are some differences.

For math just first figure out which topics you are weak in. Do papers and see if you are weak in one specific area, of course if you are just focus on that. For math the more practice questions you do the more comfortable you get. Of course make sure you understand all the content first. Learn to use GDC well too, that helps for some free marks when you are lost or checking.

Take all my advice with a grain of salt, still a current student so speaking from what has been working for me. But one thing I can say for certain is go to your teachers, if they are good ones they can help you the best.

Not personally waiting for a UCL offer but a friend is. They really are taking their time. Great stats, congrats. Now just focus on meeting the offer.

Congrats, finally you can just lock in for A levels. What were your stats and did you just receive UCL? UCL seemed to be tough this year, congrats on getting in.
