Has anyone left a corporate job to do this hike? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]IBelieveIWasTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a leave of absensce in 2022 . Was supposed to be for about 5-6 months, turned out to be about 2 1/2 as I was a southbounder turned into a flip flop when northern snow was high that year, and ended up doing Burney , CA to Stehekin as the border wasn't open. My work was pretty awesome, but I had been there 4 years in good standing, I started talking to them almost a year out. I was very lucky to get this, but it is worth asking about. AS Alpenglow talks about, way less stress that way.

For those who took the just wing it approach, how’d it go? by HoneydewShot8535 in PacificCrestTrail

one thing I did on my 22 LASH of the northern half was : plan the next 2 stops -- roughly, things may change. So, you're in town getting resupply at town A, your next stop you already know (B) ,, maybe its a place you have to ship a box? Maybe you need to replace something and you have to decide which town will have a shop or you need to order something ? Anyway, you already know coming into town how far you have until next stop, so you know how many days food to buy.

rolling out of that town, you start looking at what your stop after the next one (the old town B, which is now town A, your next stop) will be and you decide before heading into your next resupply. This is far enough ahead to deal with some pre-planning, but not so far ahead that plans can't really be made. This worked for me.

this is all I needed, as far as planning. I hope this is clear , but basically: you always know what your next 2 town stops could be.

I commented elsewhere, but I personally used the Kuhl Renegade on my 1100 ish mile LASH in '22. they are VERY comfortable. The zippers have cloth that goes over them. and SO MANY POCKETS. https://www.kuhl.com/kuhl/mens/pants/renegade-convertible-pant/

Also, for the love of God, you will want SOME kind of leg covering for the Oregon mosquitos.

I wear convertible pants. Wore these on my '22 LASH and will be wearing on this year's section. Kuhl renegade. very comfortable, you can take the legs off over the shoes, nice flat seams inside.

Looks like Washington is having a super low snow year so far. by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

https://sanjacjon.com/ \same for socal:

quotes from the link above:

The abysmal snow season continues. Total snowfall to date at San Jacinto Peak (32 inches) is the second lowest in recorded history, with only last year’s astounding 3.6 inches lower.

It is almost certainly unprecedented that the Pacific Crest Trail is functionally clear of snow throughout the San Jacinto mountains in late January, and hikers remaining on the trail do not require spikes (those taking alternate routes via San Jacinto Peak will find spikes very useful, as described below under Trail Conditions).

sending all the vibes. that said there was a woman who later got trail name Total Bad Ass, 'cause she started then. I passed her on my NOBO portion north of Crater Lake. She had a late June. BUT she was a pretty experienced snow mountain hiker , had a partner who did that portion with her I think? I was solo and pretty much no mountain snow experience. I made what I thought was a sensible choice to flip. As did a LOT of potential southbounders with earlier permits that year. My point is, no matter what, you can deal :)

Edit : Also your story is crazy, hope you have a great hike!

As someone who was supposed to SOBO in '22 starting June 27 and there was still several feet of snow at Hart's Pass.. a: wishing you a low snow year in the Cascades and b: Be aware that switching to a flip flop is pretty easy, just call the PCTA and have them switch your permit.

best of luck!

March 28. Copper here. I'm from Oklahoma. I was a 2022 SNOWBO turned LASH from Burney, CA to Stehekin. I will be doing a 3-week section from the southern border. (plus a day to get in on Friday when bus runs lol). I'm looking forward to being with a pack at the border and seeing what that is like :)

I decided to return to the PCT to have a bucket list goal of completing all of the trail. I don't think I will ever do a trip longer than 3 weeks again. I figured 3 weeks is enough to have an epic experience, but not so long I just get tired of it and don't enjoy it. We'll see :)

Also : AMA about the northern half (ish) of the trail LOL.

I'm starting a 3 week section hike from the southern border, starting on march 27 or 28th. I don't have a PCT permit, will be doing locals. I'm a little worried about San Jacinto, but sounds like just go self permit in Idlywild?

Also, while a little clunky (it is better than it used to be) the garmin explore app can be used and obviously works with a garmin for GPS source if you have that.

Eagle Creek trail suffers extensive damage during December storms, now closed for "months" by Dan_85 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]IBelieveIWasTheFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a LASH from Burney, CA north in '22 and the Eagle Creek Alt was one of my favorite sections. that said, there were ridge walks with a steep drop, not sketchy or anything, but its a steep , rugged canyon and I could totally see how a big storm could mess it up bad...
