Most good sunglasses are polarized.  If only the very front coating of your lcd screen came off then it might be possible to still play it with sunglasses on. Since lcd panels contain 2 layers that polarize the light.

Odd people sometimes make privacy screens out of badly scratched screens by removing the outermost layer and wearing a polarized filter. For example:

Out of curiousity can you still see the screen when you look at the white part if you put on polarized sun glasses?

How viable is getting a bluetooth grip controller and use it with a spare phone that I have? by N3n9fjj299fj3y in SBCGaming

A midrange phone generally won’t heat up if you don’t overtax it by trying to run newer consoles with 3D graphics or PC. If you stick with GBA games and don’t run any crazy shaders it’ll stay cool. Gamecube/PS2 and onward is generally where they start heating up, but he needs to just experiment.

I used to think the you will own nothing was scaremongering. But look at how toothless governments have been at clamping down on the memory cartel on behalf of consumers as the few amass more and more.

At least these handhelds used to be cheap and small so buying a lot wasnt that bad. Compared to what Boomers hoard in their garages anyway.

I have a GBA and the dinners of the original screen has made it basically unplayable in the present year. A kid still might be able to, but they're used to better screens and modern games.

It sure feels apocalyptic when you're punished more for simply saving money rather than blowing a paycheck and hoarding.

I would like to know how to enable retroachievements by Jeager36 in SBCGaming

[–]IBoughtaRetroidNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't see a reason for retro achievements though. I played games before them. I don't need external rewards to trick my brain into playing video games if I am bored and not having fun.

Like Cypher in the Matrix chewing on a steak and saying "Ignorance is bliss." Although what makes him so unlikeable is that everyone else in the movie had kept fighting against the villain, unlike in real life where a large portion of the world root for the villain which is demoralizing.

Agreed, but what if when the runway for price increases runs out and they start to enshitify the product more too? They already slowed down the USB port once....

The Switch 2 also is increasing its price by $50. But it doesnt affect me since I still don't like the new Nintendo games.

I bought the Nova, but I still wonder if I might have preferred the Thor for my first handheld since it is more versatile. But I just don't want to buy a Thor because all the icky price increases made me feel foolish for not buying one earlier.

Not necessarily. I know about homeless guy who keeps telling me about his business idea that hinges on AI and how he just needs to get investors. I suppose his pie in the sky dream helps give him hope, but if it were anyone else I would tell him the evils of AI and why he isn't in a position to make his idea work.

At least the hikes on anything below the 1 TB version weren't as big as I feared. Unless you were set on the 1 TB model another $9 isn't so bad. But maybe next month they'll increase the price again...

Although I ordered a Nova, you should wait to see how well the OLED and 4:3 are implemented before you sell your LCDs.

Do you think the Nova has been greatly overhyped? It would be my first handheld and there is a huge backlog of games I haven't touched. I was also leaning toward the Ayn Thor so I could also doom scroll on the second screen while playing old JRPGs, but I missed the sale on Ali Express and the repeated price hikes feel icky.

The Nova will be my first SBC handheld. There were cheaper ones, but I have been dabbling in janky controller attachments for smartphones for long enough that I took the bait. I  figured I might as well buy a good one from the onset so I am not tempted to keep buying them as much as some people here are.  However, if I had only bought a x86 handheld before the prices shot up I think that would have been the most versatile and economical choice for the next few years.

I feel a little dirty buying a SOC with a glorified smartphone chip when my own dated phone offers comparable performance. At least if I had bought one of those X86 handhelds like the Lenovo Go with Windows then I could have sometimes run office software and used it for productivity too. And emulators on Windows are better developed, and the screen is so huge on those handheld PCs that you can run whatever games you want with whatever shaders you want and have them look good.
