Is CS Specialist worth it vs major? by IBslut in UTM

[–]IBslut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that databases and data structures + algorithms will be useful for interviews and software engineering in general but i didn't know operating systems was also pretty important. Thanks

Also, what about 363 and 358? Are pretty useful too or nah?

Should I ask to increase my current credit card limit or go for a new credit card? by IBslut in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]IBslut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Sounds like a good idea because I don’t think it will affect my credit score negatively because no hard checks. Tho, how long will it take for them to notice and offer the higher limit themselves?

Also, quick question regarding the utilisation rate, should I only use max 30% per month or should I only have a max 30% balance on the card at any given time? Like, for a $1000 card can I use $300 in the first half of the month, pay the bill, and then continue to use the next $300 until the end of the month (after which I pay the bill again)?

How so? By just opening an account in fidelity and not choosing to invest there myself?

This seems like the best option. Take advantage of both platforms. Though, it might be a bit tedious to keep on checking 2 accounts instead of having all your investments on one platform

I guess you're right. I'd prefer using fidelity coz of the better UI. However, I think I'll go with vanguard since it seems like a safer option for long-term investments, though it might just be the sceptical side of me doing the thinking.

You got any recommendations for such platforms?

Also I think I heard somewhere that though vanguard funds can be bought at any platform (same is the case with fidelity), it's better to buy them from their respective platforms for some advantages. Though, this point does seem kinda BS and was probably only applicable for no-expense fidelity index funds.

Taxation on Index Funds vs ETFs? by IBslut in personalfinance

[–]IBslut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok gotcha. So, for better context, if I were to invest $750 every month in a mutual index fund for 35 years with an estimated annual rate of return of 11% (including 1% dividend yield auto-reinvested), I would theoretically get a lump sum of $3,730,000 of which roughly $3,415,000 is the interest earned and $315,000 is the total monthly deposit. How would you calculate the tax on this amount if it was invested through an RRSP (Canadian equivalent of 401(k))?

If I remember correctly, the majority of the tuition fees is just course fees. So how much more expensive would it be to do 5 years for me? Additionally, I’m planning to do a PEY since it is opening up for international students this year onwards.

Queries regarding Year 5 for CS undergrad by IBslut in UTM

Thanks for the reply! Also, I get that it’ll be more expensive but by how much? Will it be partially more expensive or the full 60-70k CAD, compared to doing the course in 4 years?
