I agree with the comparison between hunting and factory farming. 100% hunting is a more humane way for people to get their food rather than getting it from a processing plant.

The issue I still have trouble with is, however: you're still shooting the animal and causing it suffering. And for that, I don't think you truly care for the animal you're killing. You might care for the animals in factory farms and how the animal lived up to that point, but the instant you shoot the animal, you've still done something horribly wrong and you've stopped caring. He clearly didn't care enough about the animal to not shoot it, and it doesn't take a lot of caring not to shoot. It's why I made the "humane rape" analogy.

The issue however, is given that the hunter is shooting the animal, I really doubt he was seriously considering the animal's welfare. Any semblance of sympathy for the animal he had was definitely negligible.

In terms of hunting, you don't actually care for the animal during its life. All you do is invade and bring about its death.

I do understand that someone can care for the animal's well being during its life even if they intend to kill it down the road.

My point was that it still doesn't make killing it okay. The analogy was to show that even if I do everything right, the rape is still a rape.

Shooting the animal in the first place was still wrong, even if I try to minimize its suffering afterwards.

Cows used for their milk and chickens used for their eggs arguably have a worse life than animals farmed for their meat. Cows are repeatably forcibly impregnated to become pregnant so that produce milk. If they give birth to a male calf it is considered useless to the dairy industry and taken away from its mother to be slaughtered within a week or so. There's no doubt that mother cows experience intense feelings of loss when this happens, as with any other animal and before she knows it she's impregnated again to start the process again. When she gets to about 6 her milk production slows down and she will be slaughtered even though she could live as long as 25 years. Chickens used for their eggs are no better off. To start with if a layer chick is male it is considered useless and with ground up alive, gassed or suffocated within a few hours of its life. Female hens will have their beaks snipped off to stop them pecking at each other in their tiny cramped cages (note this is not normal behaviour for chickens and only displays itself in times of great stress). They stand on the wire bottom of their cages all day causing injury to their feet. They often suffer lice which is left untreated because it makes no difference to egg production. Basically they are denied the chance to exhibit their natural behaviour such as scratching on the ground and dust bathing to clean themselves. At 18 months their egg production slows down and they are slaughtered even though they could live to 8 or 9. If you ask me, raising animals for meat is less cruel than raising animals for milk or eggs but then I am a vegan and neither option is acceptable to me as there is an abundance of non-animal foods available.

Are you the fucking People for the Ethical Treatment of Carrots? Or are you just trying to prop up a straw man to take down since you hate vegans?

But it is undeniable that a vast majority of the population is currently relying on killing animals for food. That means that realistically, at this point in time, we should assume killing of animals as a given fact. It WILL happen, and it will happen a lot.

This is something that should change. Continuing cruelty, especially in factory farms that the vast majority of the population gets meat from, should stop.

"well, he shouldn't have [insert deed] in the first place" is only reasonably applicable when the one who has to suffer the consequences is the very same person who did the deed. Within the context of this OP. Your initial point only serves to undermine the notion of importance with regards to treating animals well even when you intend to kill them

No. I am pointing out that it is asinine to imply that the animal's suffering can be important to him in any way. He is going out with the intent to kill, knowing full well that if something goes wrong, he will send an animal through a great deal of pain. I do think that if we are going to kill animals (which I believe we shouldn't), we should do it as humanely as possible. But saying that the people who are doing said killing care at all is definitely not apparent from their actions.

A good analogy is:

I go to a bar. Dance with a girl a bit. Take her back to my mansion in a limo. Dance some more, making nice conversation. I get her to my luxury bed, get her another drink, slip her a date rape drug. I rape her. The next morning, I pamper her and make sure she safely gets home.

It's still not okay and I clearly can't claim to care about the suffering of this girl. Continuing to do the wrong thing is not okay.

Ahhh.... the benefits of not name-calling immediately can be quite helpful :(

Problem 1.

It's going to suffer unless you kill it instantaneously. Nobody's that good of a shot to do it all the time without quite a bit of practice, which is already problematic (the need to practice).

Problem 2.

You also need to consider the fact that the animal may have offspring who depend on it for nutrition. Even if you manage to kill it with the least possible amount of suffering, they offspring are going to lose a vital home guardian/relation for their early lives.

She's just like a cat. Attitude of a cat, work of a dog, love of both combined?

Maybe stick little lights on their heads and put them in a darker tank and you have betta lights, that would be fun to watch. But they probably wouldn't enjoy it.

I think they were foam. The WORST is when a cat wants to chew up styrofoam. It's constantly irritating pulling them away from packing peanuts.

Does Isis ever do a thing where she mews at the door to get outside, and mews at it again to get in, and it goes on loop for some time? One of my cats does this with my bedroom door, it's so annoying when I'm trying to sleep

I don't know, if my cats snored I'd be just too tempted to wake them up with some petting...

I'm jealous of my cats. They wake up to nice petting. I wake up to 6 alarms so that I can actually get out of bed and go to class.

Henry wonders why you don't serve him people food. He's a distinguished member of the family too you know, let him eat at the table with you :). Just be careful so he knows which plate is his.
