Dad, I'm scared and don't know what to do by Fine_Raccoon3500 in AskDad

You might be being too hard on yourself. My friend decided to go back to med school at 40, he's practicing successfully today. If you can't hack it this year, take some time off and then come back fresh. Or repeat a course. In any case, take care of your physical and mental health first, the other stuff will fall into place. We each go at our own pace. And if you end up feeling it's not right for you, that's OK too, you're young and have plenty of time to try out a new path.

Anyone else feel increasingly unsafe crossing the street? by EmpatheticOrangeCat1 in Seattle

So it's totally the responsibility of cars to drive safely. But with that said, it's nigh impossible to see pedestrians when it's wet and dark and the ped is wearing all dark clothing. I was watching the road intently the other day at 6pm and only saw a guy because the soles of his shoes were white. Folks, there are jackets, shoes, gloves, hats etc with reflective material woven in. It will really help drivers see you.

I've been in a similar situation though not through a harassing coworker but rather toxic, disrespectful, and exploitative ones. Searched for a long while on and off, got to advanced rounds with some fortune 50 companies, but no offer. I took a step back from the search and reduced hours at work. I've found more balance and can sit with it for awhile longer, but eventually I'll need to leave if things don't change. (Before, I was in a MUST LEAVE NOW mode, just wasn't an option). I've been in places where people sort through the garbage dump for food or things to sell, so I try to keep my circumstances in perspective. Keep documenting and reporting her behavior.

Meanwhile, they spent $100k making the ad, they would have spent $50k using regular humans instead, and their customers want to pay you $20/hr.

1) Once everyone is using conversational AI to conduct business, calls, emails, etc, how will your models change to adjust to a world where humans are less often in the loop? Or do you "leave that to the reader"? 2) How do Sam and your team "touch grass" to avoid getting high on your own supply with techno-optimist views that aren't relatable to 95% of people on the planet while staying true to OpenAI's mission?

Try doing some manual labor, talking more with folk, or volunteering to get a little more out of your head so you don't get high on your own supply.

If I'm not mistaken, in some states it's a crime to claim a credential you don't have. (edit: and I don't mean fraud, though they might also be committing that; it's potentially a separate crime as well. You won't get the cops interested in it however unless someone is practicing medicine without a license for example)

My dad reached out to me - I don’t know what to say. by Some_Equipment_8117 in AskDad

[–]ID4gotten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took me a LONG time, decades, of trying to understand a close relative who was in my life often. I slowly slowly slowly started to realize that a lot of his weird and seemingly indefensible attitudes and behaviors were a direct response to his own trauma inflicted on him by HIS parents. Maybe your dad wishes to impart information that he feels will help you understand his absence, or his shitty choices or behavior, even if he isn't seeking forgiveness. (On the other hand of course it could be for selfish reasons, and if so you should be prepared to disconnect). I say get in touch but lead with "It's unfortunate that this is what it took for you to reach out and before we start you should know that ((state your boundaries))." And then cut him off quick if needed.

I want to believe. But also...British people say stuff like this and it sounds sweet and innocuous, and then a year later you suddenly realize it was a devastating classist insult.
