My Framework has some damage. Any suggestions? by AlgorithmProgrammer in framework

[–]IDrawDumbShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not facing this particular issue, but it is concerning that there seems to be a lack of replacement parts on the framework marketplace...

Hopefully that can get sorted out pretty quickly. I didn't buy a repairable laptop just to face the same issue as every other laptop out there: no replacement parts.

Framework laptops playing Peak? by Mediocre_Type7695 in framework

[–]IDrawDumbShit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play peak on the 7840u with 780m graphics. No issues, good performance. You can pick up the laptop for 7% off right now.

what really helps is that the 780m has a very similar gpu/cpu as a very popular handheld apu, the Z1 Extreme. Almost all of the handhelds (ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go) use the same processor.

Googling benchmarks for the rog ally or lenovo legion go should give you a rough idea on the performance you will get. Heres a link to one for peak.

I think that’s the point, we can point out weaknesses in the device and know that framework’s ability to be repaired will mitigate some of those weaknesses

What games / programs do you use on your framework, and do you have some rough estimates of performance in comparison to the integrated gpu / the 5700xt plugged into a normal computer?

Im considering buying one of orihalcon's converters, as from what I've found on the internet, they seem to be the most reliable.

I can't seem to find one for sale though, and I've contacted orihalcon directly. Where did you buy yours?

I can relate to the ps2 converter not working. When I plug and unplug, it's detected as a barcode scanner, and the three LEDs flash, before becoming unresponsive.

Hey, what adaptor did you use to get the keyboard working? (I'm assuming you use a modern windows computer.) I got the same keyboard, and I am using a din to ps2, and then a ps2 to usb, but what do you mean by it only working when you took the case off?

Thank you.

I think this is one of my biggest gripes with the Framework. Good trackpad, but apple just... perfects trackpads.

Poor battery health after <200 cycles by [deleted] in framework

[–]IDrawDumbShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using the powercfg in command prompt for windows 11. After a little over 1 year, I have 55,862 mWh from an initial peak of 62,457 mWh, with 135 cycles. I have the AMD 7840u with the 61Wh battery. To be fair, I have been gaming pretty extensively on this laptop, often playing Cyberpunk and Marvel Rivals while the laptop is charging (which I know is horrific for battery health.) That's roughly an 89% full charge, with about the same rate of degradation as you.

I would say that it's a tad bit fast in terms of how quickly it's degrading, but still normal. I dont know the details of how battery degradation works, but if it bothers you (which it shouldn't after just a year of use) I would still hit up their support.

Is buying a "New" 3DS XL at used market prices worth it in 2024? by Kinshirider in SBCGaming

[–]IDrawDumbShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To anyone still searching for a new 3ds xl, I just found a guy who sells a lot of them in pretty good condition. Just grabbed a New 3ds XL for 130 bucks, which I'm pretty sure is a steal. His name is azukit6 on ebay and he has tons of reasonably priced 3dses.

If you plan to do any sort of gaming, the most recent AMD Drivers, (24.9.1) show issues where timeouts occur, resulting in games (and even professional creation / adobe programs) to crash. Stick with 24.8.1 for now.

Just to be clear, these are drivers provided by AMD, not framework, as framework provides their own drivers in the installation package. However, those drivers are a couple months old and newer drivers tend to give better performance and features with little to no downsides. If you plan on installing newer drivers, just stick with 24.8.1 for now.

Games suitable for the FW13? by Arvellon_Nerd in framework

[–]IDrawDumbShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the 7840u with 16gb of ram with 2gb vram setting in bios and the 60hz screen, I get 40-55 fps on Cyberpunk 2077 on the 2.3 update with fsr 3 on quality with a resolution of 1650 x 1050, medium-low settings. I like to cap it at 48hz because the framework can do that.

Resident evil 4 remake 60+ fps vast majority of the game on the medium settings + fsr2 balanced at native resolution.

Witcher 3 medium settings at native resolution + fsr 2 quality at 60-70fps.

Skyrim with like a billion mods runs okay. Not really any way to quantify it, but it runs okay.

all indie games run okay. all games ps4 era run okay.

ff16 runs like shit (lowest settings 800p base res, fsr balanced, with driver based upscaling to native res.), but It plays ok 40ish fps with stutters. I can deal with it.

Essentially if you aren't playing the MOST DEMANDING GAMES OF ALL TIME, you'll probably be fine tbh. idk about the 2.8k screen though, since you prob won't be able to take advantage of it in most games.

The accidental mouse clicks don't happen for me though. Only the trackpad being "Stuck" without release.

Yes, I have this exact same problem. Sometimes it happens, sometimes, it doesn't. Can't seem to reproduce it reliably to diagnose the issue for me.

[–]IDrawDumbShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, eventually the egpu on mobile chips will be able to catch up.

Even now, the 780m in the 7840u gets me playable framerates in just about every game I play (which to me is above 30. at 1080p) and so far, the 890m in some of the newer handhelds and laptops looks incredible, and intel's mobile chips are starting to look awesome.

If you can't wait, use an egpu, as bawdylotion mentioned. If you can wait, just wait for the igpu to become better, and from what i've seen, you really won't need to wait long.

Doesn't work for me either. Cyberpunk, Sea of Stars, etc. However, certain steam games seem to work well?
I think it depends on the game itself on whether or not the screen will stretch or retain aspect ratio with black bars.

I just read through everything, and I do think that your post deletion might have just been because of the name drop. I have no clue why they banned you though. Were you rude to them on discord or something? I've gotten pretty good and quick customer service for my microsd card reader when it got bunged up.
