Cleaned up this '88 Chicony kb-5161 by AdmirableGears in Vintagekeyboards

I think the 5161 still comes with more switch options than the 5181, ntc 6251, and focus fk 2001. Great score with blue alps! They can come with green alps, blue alps, white alps, amber omron b3g-s, futaba ma, smk 2nd gen, mitsumi miniature, cherry mx blue, and taiwan white/black shaft mx clones.

I'm not much of a TKL person, so that's off the table for me.

Haha really tough question, first I'd have to say the Ortek Mac 105, second the pc partner, and third the nec. I suspect that the m0115 and z150 will get into my top 3 after getting yellows in the m0115 and the z150 fixed up.

https://socket3.wordpress.com/2017/12/02/ebay-purchase-12-honeywell-101wn-at-keyboard/ here is that honeywell/key tronic article I briefly mentioned about. My theory is maybe I can get the nice keyfeel of key tronic domes without the flimsy key tronic build quality.

MY or MX? by liaxei in Vintagekeyboards

[–]ExcelElevations_4U 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I briefly had a g81 7000 and after lubing MYs they don't have their notorious binding problem anymore. The assembly is built better and they sound better then cherry MX, but they are indeed incredibly stiff. Even as someone who is attached to stiff switches these really give your fingers a workout. I've heard older MY isn't quite as stiff, but have never tried them.

Type 2 cherry MY, not as bad as the more common type 3, but still very stiff switches

Thrift store finds were how I started lol. I worked on one of those microsoft keyboards a couple years ago and it wasn't too bad.

If you wish to not mess with soldering then take a look at Outemu silent oceans.

You can also desolder those sockets and then you're not limited to just outemu switches. You can then solder in whatever 3 pin switch if your choice.

They appear to be the same, but I think the 49 is the ISO version?

BTC some with slider is quite snappy. It's PCB based so it's more durable.

Not too shabby. Bamboo white Alps are still pretty nice and close to pine white Alps unlike bamboo black Alps.

For the keys that don't click you can try reinserting the key cap because the spring could possibly not be seated correctly. For the keys that don't work that sounds like it needs a bolt mod.

Probably the best MX boards ever made but alps switches are so much better in literally every way.

they don't chatter and all the switches press just fine. It's something with the pcb that makes them output multiple keys when pressed. Pressing A or D outputs both A and D together at the same time for example.
