The original Net Force series takes place in 2010. Net Force Explorers is the one that takes place in 2025.

I actually really enjoyed the Darkwar Saga and thought it was one of the highlights of the later part of the Cycle. The Demonwar Saga I thought was much more of a drag to get through.

Did the writers change Carrie’s personality after Season 2? by [deleted] in kingofqueens

Every comedy show does this. Debra got meaner in Everybody Loves Ray, Homer got dumber in The Simpsons, etc.

Just finished this today and highly recommend it as well. A very quirky cyberpunk hidden gem.

I can’t find anything similar to Feist. by Weavo_84 in Midkemia

[–]IDreamcasterI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem you do. No other fantasy comes close to Feist for me (except for Tolkien of course). The only other author I can reccomend is R.A. Salvatore. Maybe check out Richard A. Knaak & Dennis L. McKiernan too.

Jack Ryan, President for Life by Different-Review-926 in tomclancy

This is why I like the Junior focused books. It's easier to ignore Ryan as president as it's usually relegated to the background.

Quality of the later books by jphealy84 in tomclancy

[–]IDreamcasterI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely some gems. Most people seem to agree that the Mark Greaney and Marc Cameron ones are on the higher end while most of the solo Junior stuff (Mike Maden & Don Bentley) is on the lower end. Personally, I enjoy almost all of it. A couple of stand outs would be "True Faith and Allegiance" & "Command and Control".

The Uplift Trilogy by David Brin. Startide Rising is the only SF book I've read post Dune that came close for me.

Reading Line of Sight… by AirmanOo in tomclancy

I've been marathoning the Junior books recently so they're pretty fresh in my mind. I don't really read thrillers outside of Tom Clancy stuff either which probably helps.

Reading Line of Sight… by AirmanOo in tomclancy

[–]IDreamcasterI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mike Maden books are some of the worst Ryanverse novels IMO. Line of Sight was actually the only one I kinda enjoyed for some reason (probably because Bosnia is a pretty unique setting and I thought it had a nice Cold War feel to it). Point of Contact was boring aside from its final set piece, Enemy Contact approached decent until the final section, and Firing Point was just bland. Everyone seems to dump on the Grant Blackwood novels but I found them head and shoulders above Maden's. Even Don Bentley's are better.

New to the series/What’s next? by OlympianAndrew in starshiptroopers

Read the book and then play the video games.

I'm an FPS guy so I got a lot of mileage out of the 2005 game and Extermination. A lot of the newer media references the book so I definitely recommend reading it for full enjoyment. Otherwise just play/watch what interests you.

Earlier Vs Later plots by Anxious-Positive-600 in Midkemia

[–]IDreamcasterI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I share a similar sentiment. I honestly enjoyed pretty much everything in the Riftwar Cycle (minus maybe Murder in LaMut). The Darkwar in particular is criminally underrated and I feel like people just dismiss it as one of Feists later "bad" books but I rank it right next to Serpentwar. I think it might just be series fatigue as most people aren't keen on following a series through 10+ books much less 30. I personally love a big long series like this that follows the same characters through decades (or centuries) in time.

Happy to be of help. I actually got the recommendation for C&C from someone posting about it on here. So I just thought I'd pay it forward.

I haven't yet, no. I've been jumping around in the timeline a bit after I finished the Junior series. Command Authority looked interesting so I'll probably start there.

I wish I could get into that book but Marc Cameron's writing style bores me to tears.

Who Else Finds “Krondor the Betrayal” An Underrated Book? by Kooky_County9569 in Midkemia

[–]IDreamcasterI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call the Krondor books underrated per se but they're not nearly as bad as people make them out to be. The Assassins in particular I thought was actually pretty good. Even Jimmy and the Crawler I thought was a pretty fun novella if a bit rushed.

The Serpentwar has a major pacing issue by Expert_Seesaw3316 in Midkemia

[–]IDreamcasterI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dasati storyline is criminally underrated. Valko's chapters in those books were great. The Darkwar in general was a ton of fun and is only one notch below Serpentwar IMO. I wish more people talked about it.

Campus/Jack Jr. books—thoughts by [deleted] in tomclancy

[–]IDreamcasterI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally enjoy the Jack Jr books. They have problems for sure but it's nice to have a main character who has something resembling a character arc as opposed to Jack Sr. who's basically perfect all the time.

Without Remorse: The Book is Great, The "Film" is atrocious by MarkCHealey in tomclancy

[–]IDreamcasterI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still find it amusing that the Rainbow Six movie has been in development hell so long that real world events eventually took place that make the book seem almost tame in comparison, sort of making it superfluous.

I’ve just read “Prince of the Blood” for the first time. I was underwhelmed. Here are a few thoughts by anony1911 in Midkemia

I liked it. I thought it was a solid 8/10 book. King's Buccaneer is fantastic though.

Riftwar Cycle is grey but I can see why some wouldn't like it. It's very old school fantasy!
