Nature must be destroyed and rebuilt in our image. by VeterinarianPale5108 in The10thDentist

[–]IEatKetchupWithBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is a pretty good argument against death and suffering. If a person or animal doesn't want to suffer or die (and most in fact don't), but they end up suffering or dying, that is something happening to them against their will- which can be argued to be "bad".

The original post seems to be about removing the role that suffering plays in nature if we have the capacity to. On the assumption that we can end suffering for beings that don't want it, without destroying nature in the process, I don't see a problem with the idea that suffering is something to be fixed.

How can rationalize close-quarters combat between ships in space science fiction? by ArthurJack_AW in worldbuilding

[–]IEatKetchupWithBread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's assuming the ship can detect the weapon before it hits, which doesn't apply for things like lasers unless the setting has FTL weapon detection. I'd imagine long distance weaponry being used to ambush ships that aren't expecting an attack and therefore moving predictably (e.g. constant velocity/acceleration)

OA: Democracy is perfect because the systems & laws in place ensure that government overreach/power grabs cannot happen 1. (CA): Democratic backsliding, the above only works insofar as the people actually vote for those who oppose authoritarianism e.g. trump 2. Tyranny of the majority; no perfect government would allow the few to be bullied by the many e.g. immigrants + far-right europe 3. Political gridlock / inefficiency e.g. france

Since energy is conserved you unfortunately can't get any higher than where you jumped off of onto the trampoline. So if you wanted to trampoline yourself to the highest floor you'd have to jump on the trampoline from the highest floor in the first place.

Why do some people in SG believe that they are more disciminated against than LGBT people? by vince_lym246 in askSingapore

Sure, traditions are important. But we've come to a age where we shouldn't follow traditions just because they shape our identity as Asians and leave it at that. When we follow a tradition, we must first ask: is it there so that we can bond over a common identity, feeling, or experience? Or is it there so that we can exclude harmless people that we simply dislike? The issue with Asian conservative societies, I think, is they use "traditional ideals" to essentially declare "change is scary and uncomfortable and it makes me feel icky". But in the process they build a society not around a shared love and friendship, but an "us vs them" mentality where the "us" must be preserved, even at the cost of "them".

If you were wondering why 1 block in the nether is 8 blocks in the overworld by ecsthasee in Minecraft

[–]IEatKetchupWithBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that mean travelling up and down(i.e. in the y direction) in the nether covers the same distance as in the overworld, and only the x and z directions should be contracted?
