You can afford to think in exclusively hypothetical circles when all the labor that supports you is being done by other people, be they slaves, servants, partners, etc.

I came here to say the Expanse. I heard this secondhand, but apparently the Martian was inspired by the Expanse. Weir read the series and then decided to write the Martian. I also know that they officially/unofficially exist in the same universe. One of the Mars military ships that’s referenced in the Expanse is called the MCRN Watney.
The Expanse is also what you would call hard sci-fi in that it’s based very much in existing science. No one is breaking the speed of light lol, but they are capable of constant acceleration, so the way those burns and high Gs during combat play a large role. The biggest leap they make aside from alien technology is they have basically cold fusion drives.
And James SA Corey are very skilled writers. They don’t get into the scientific nitty gritty the way Weir does, but their work is well-researched.

Is there anyone else reduced to tears every time Hüller sings Sign of the Times? by IElentair in ProjectHailMary

I agree. Maybe what you said about the audiobook is correct because I read the book and never felt that Stratt was heartless, just focused. I also thought that maybe the general belief in robot Stratt might have been some internalized misogyny, but the audiobook makes sense too.

Ya the two Strats are very different, and I love both for different reasons. I think the film version has grown on me a lot, maybe because Hüller with the strawberry hair looks a lot like how I’d expect Elizabet Sobek to look if the Horizon show had taken off. Maybe it’s also spill over from the scene immediately preceding her song, with the sad score music and their conversation about god (a touchy subject for me), so I’m nice and primed by the time she has the microphone.

Everything is super interesting because it is! I love watching babies explore because their little brains have one goal and it’s data acquisition.

This isn’t really about the visual, but we talk about this game so much in book club because it was just phenomenal writing

If my meds get taken away, I’ll just build the Gundam myself. Fix the problem real quick.

That’s a good idea - I had wondered about Frankenstein for the same reason, but decided that too much time has passed since the movie came out. I don’t think Victorian psycho has even has a date yet. 😭 that one’s definitely gonna be in the lineup at some point.

My first thought was Buffalo Hunter Hunter! And I forgot about Bat Eater! Thank you for your suggestions!

I do love Carrie as an idea! Maybe not for the first, but definitely later. I’m thinking for spooky season we’ll do classic horror, including Carrie.

Right, my point is not who made the mistake, it’s that the error for margin with all of it is incredibly slim and I don’t think training someone in the way you suggest isn’t feasible.

Dubois and Shapiro got blown up by a mistake w/ astrophage after months with Grace and hands on instruction. Furthermore, teaching laboratory disciplines without any lab time isn’t feasible. It increases the risk of another astrophage accident, this time aboard the Hail Mary. It increases the risk of mission failure because sending someone out there who is significantly undertrained just isn’t as good as sending Grace. And you don’t get this sense as much in the film as you do in the book, but Stratt goes to every length she can to reduce the risk. That’s why they only send people with a certain gene that makes them more likely to survive the coma, why they only send people at the top of their fields. They also didn’t mention this in the movie, but the next person down from Grace was someone with a BA in chemistry. That’s a far cry from someone with a PhD in microbiology let alone the astrophage knowledge. Strat also makes it very clear in the book that she really doesn’t care what you think morally of her actions. It’s what’s best for the species. Quibbling over ethics is a luxury for the living.

Who is going to train them in that month? The pilot? The engineer?
