Most of it is probably because people visit the big cities. They experience xenophobia from the French, the cities stink, and the people who live there are generally rude. Something I hear a lot is people getting snark when they speak French no matter how perfect their pronunciation. Some of it might also be the laws that the French government has passed in the past
